Summary:
By the late twentieth century, idyllic depictions of eighteenth-century manorial landscapes had become artistic expressions of dislocation. Western agricultural paradigms had shifted, as had the relationship between art and agriculture. The Cultivated Landscape uses over seventy illustrations to look at the development of Western agriculture from feudal times to the present. Craig Pearson and Judith Nasby discuss the evolution of how we think about agriculture, its use of the land and impact on landscape, and how landscape has been portrayed historically in art. They also offer a wider discussion on the role that science and economics have played in agricultural development and the parallels to changes in art form. The Cultivated Landscape ends with a discussion of the complex issues facing agriculture today, the need for greater connectivity between agriculture and our environment, and options for the future.

Summary:
"People make too much of architecture. I have a running quarrel with architects who overestimate architecture. Reality is at eye-level with people walking down the street." Born in 1923 in Budapest, Hungary, Yona Friedman is widely considered one of the greatest utopian visionary architects of the twentieth century. Currently based in Paris, he is just as much a sociologist as a designer of buildings, more concerned with the way people interact with their environments than monumental statements by an ego-centric creator. In this illuminating talk with The Conversation Series editor Hans Ulrich Obrist, he touches on the needs of the individual in heterogeneous urban societies, past and future projects, utopia, influences and metaphysics, revealing a wise and deeply-animated humanistic intellect. Known for his 1958 manifesto, L'Architecture mobile, Friedman's ideas have remained influential. His work was featured at the 2002 Documenta.

Summary:
Is it possible to design a building without a context? How can an architect react to something that does not yet exist? For an office building in Digital Media City, a new section of Seoul that is still on the drawing board, Berlin-based architects Frank Barkow and Regine Leibinger developed an unusual strategy. The methodic treatment of themes such as "place" or "history" did not come into play at all, and the designs for the neighboring parcels of land were unknown. The architects gave their building the ability to kaleidoscopically reflect its future surroundings in a folded façade. This book documents the process of designing and constructing the building, which was completed in early 2007. Texts, photographs, and video stills provide commentary on the emergence of a versatile face in the midst of facelessness. With DVD-video "Reflect observed" by Corinne Rose.

Summary:
Walker Evans’ work was spread over forty-six fitful and prolific years, yet in a scant two years, 1935-1936, he produced a singular body of work that defined his career. In the process he refined a hybrid style which combined documentation with sly personal comment. During that brief time he worked for the Farm Security Administration (previously the U.S. Resettlement Administration) photographing the consequences of the Great Depression. He delighted in being the artist traveling incognito as an artless photojournalist, but with the independence to satisfy his own designs. This volume presents those seminal images for the first time as a comprehensive body and in chronological order. These are prime examples of Evans’ alchemy — his seemingly effortless transformation of mundane fact into sweeping lyricism. This series not only defines his mature style but also offers a path for artists of future generations.

Summary:
Antonin Artaud's journey to Ireland in 1937 marked an extraordinary—and apocalyptic—turning point in his life and career. After publishing the manifesto ''The New Revelations of Being'' about the 'catastrophic immediate-future,' Artaud abruptly left Paris for Ireland, remaining there for six weeks without money. Artaud was eventually arrested as an undesirable alien, beaten by the police, and summarily deported back to France. On his return, he spent nine years in asylums, remaining there through the entire span of World War II. During his fateful journey, Artaud wrote letters to friends in Paris which included several 'magic spells,' intended to curse his enemies and protect his friends from the city's forthcoming incineration and the Antichrist's appearance. This book collects all of Artaud's surviving correspondence from his time in Ireland, as well as photographs of the locations he traveled through.

Summary:
"The Legacy of Transgressive Objects" traces the afterlife and historicization of the concept of transgression in the art, architecture, technology, music and psychedelic practices of 1968 and its legacy, by looking at the objects, materials and images that originally shaped these ideas. These decades saw the fertile cross-pollination of rebellious political and artistic energies: radical architecture suggested a whole new organization of society, artistic practices enthusiastically dissolved boundaries between art and life, and music festivals staged gleeful opportunities for transgression. The material heritage of this historical moment is ambivalent—though often ephemeral and deteriorating, the objects associated with these ideas still function as repositories of time and as evocative physical objects. Against this background, this book traces the historical index of these objects that promised to change the world and now open up to the future horizons of the recent past.

For more than fifty years, Walter Bernard and Milton Glaser have revolutionized the look of magazine journalism. In ''Mag Men,'' Bernard and Glaser recount their storied careers, offering insiders’ perspective on some of the most iconic design work of the twentieth century. The authors look back on and analyze some of their most important and compelling projects, from the creation of New York magazine to redesigns of such publications as Time, Fortune, Paris Match, and The Nation, explaining how their designs complemented a story and shaped the visual identity of a magazine. At a time when uncertainty continues to cloud the future of print journalism, ''Mag Men'' offers not only a personal history from two of its most innovative figures, but also a reminder and celebration of the visual impact and sense of style that only magazines can offer.

Summary:
How do designers in research-driven practices differentiate themselves from each other and form distinctive platforms for future practice? The research presented in this second edition and carried out in Australia as part of an Australian Research Council Discovery Program is of significance for design practice, review, and our deeper understanding of the design of space and spaces. In continuing the exploration of spatial intelligence,” this research further develops our understanding of designers, how they work and what they draw on through their lives that shapes their spatial thinking, and their practice. The research also provides broader insights into a more public understanding and acknowledgement of our collective spatial intelligence. It shows how this could be developed and enhanced to provide more spatial and design literacy in our communities, and how these can engage with their changing environments.

Summary:
For millennia, plants and their habitats have been fundamental to the lives of Indigenous Peoples - as sources of food and nutrition, medicines, and technological materials - and central to ceremonial traditions, spiritual beliefs, narratives, and language. While the First Peoples of Canada and other parts of the world have developed deep cultural understandings of plants and their environments, this knowledge is often underrecognized in debates about land rights and title, reconciliation, treaty negotiations, and traditional territories. Plants, People, and Places argues that the time is long past due to recognize and accommodate Indigenous Peoples' relationships with plants and their ecosystems. Analyzing specific cases in which Indigenous Peoples' inherent rights to the environment have been denied or restricted, this collection promotes future prosperity through more effective and just recognition of the historical use of and care for plants in Indigenous cultures.

Summary:
This book highlights the change-making capacity of culture by exploring the intellectual and practical interventions of "courageous citizens." These citizens can be thinkers, artists, activists and collectives—those whose thoughts, ideas and actions play a pivotal role in the struggle for just societies. It is these change-makers who, through their everyday actions, work toward a collective future and complex societal reconfigurations. Looking back at the past decade, this book identifies three themes which have been, and continue to be, relevant to social change: identity and diversity; culture, communities and democracies; and solidarity and fragmentation. It shows how courageous citizens have activated the cycles of thinking and rethinking, doing and changing, which have altered the way we view the world. Combining theoretical perspectives with case studies, this book aims to demonstrate the potential of culture to generate positive social change.
