Summary:
The design of infrastructural networks—that is, roads, railways and any system that enables flow within a structure such as a city—is among urban design's foremost tasks. Around the globe, the awareness of enhanced infrastructure fluidity as a catalyst for economic development is rising. The Landscape of Contemporary Infrastructure investigates how infrastructure design determines the organization and flow of the inhabited landscape—as an agency of enhanced mobility, as a design feature contributing to the character of a city and as a sound theoretical approach to a positive experience of collective space. These issues are explored in four chapters that catalogue these approaches, each chapter buttressed with key projects from the world's most important designers in this field, including Arata Isozaki, Paul Andreu, Xaveer De Geyter, Jean Nouvel and Ricardo Bofill. The authors demonstrate how the creative potential of architecture, landscape architecture and urban design is essential to the effective flow of infrastructural networks.

Summary:
The essays and works of art and design featured in this publication are organized around three territories: the atmospheric, the biologic, and the geologic. Each cluster of essays is further framed by forewords and afterwords, which draw individual points of view into a larger articulation of what an ambiguous territory might be and how it operates. "Ambiguous Territory" emerged from a symposium and exhibition held at the University of Michigan in the fall of 2017, and exhibitions at the University of Virginia and Pratt Manhattan Gallery in 2018, and at Ithaca College in 2019. This volume belongs in that territory of ambiguity and curiosity, a place where there is room for musings, laughter, and despair. The projects convey, in different ways, a hope for a better future, but also a sense of not knowing if that future is at all possible.

Summary:
Charles Waldheim traces the roots of landscape as a form of urbanism from its origins in the Renaissance through the twentieth century. Growing out of progressive architectural culture and populist environmentalism, the concept was further informed by the nineteenth-century invention of landscape architecture as a "new art" charged with reconciling the design of the industrial city with its ecological and social conditions. In the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, as urban planning shifted from design to social science, and as urban design committed to neotraditional models of town planning, landscape urbanism emerged to fill a void at the heart of the contemporary urban project.

Summary:
Michel Desvigne is the most renowned French landscape architect in the world. Based in Paris, he has held guest professorships at such institutions as the Architectural Association in London and Harvard University. Desvigne's projects have a strong strategic and conceptual component. Urban infrastructure projects play a major role, and emphasize the urban planning and design expertise evident in his landscape architecture. The book documents ten of Devigne's major projects from France, the US, Spain and Qatar, in which he is responsible not only for the landscape architecture, but for coordination of the entire project. How can such highly complex projects be realized? What does the intellectual thought process look like? What specific problems arise in their realization?

Summary:
Sea of Land introduces the polder as an important piece in the jigsaw puzzle of Dutch national identity. Whot actually is a polder? How does this artificial landscape work? What are its particular features and how can they be further developed? This book descri-bes the history, the impoldering and the lay-out of the most famous examples of Dutch land reclamation in their interconnection. What's new about it is the fact it occurs from the vantage point of landscape architecture. Sea of Land is lavishly illustrated and contains a selection of unique polder mops, prints and paintings. The contemporary situation is elucidated by means of aerial photos and more than 200 analytical and design sketches.
