Geographies of Trash reclaims the role of forms, technologies, economies and logistics of the waste system in the production of new aesthetics and politics of urbanism. Honored with a 2014 ACSA Faculty Design Award, the book charts the geographies of trash in Michigan across scales to propose five speculative projects that bring to visibility disciplinary controversies on the relations of technology, space and politics.

As Timothy Leary's tune-in-turn-on-drop-out message spread across the country, idealistic and anarchic enclaves mushroomed with names like Drop City and Morning Star - many experimenting with alternative forms of energy, recycling, and means of sustainability. For the first time, in rich documentary illustration material, these ephemeral spaces are brought together in this book. Many of the photographs have never been published before. They are explained and displayed in detail by an extensive text by acclaimed author Alistair Gordon.

Summary:
As one of the world’s foremost urban designers, architect Terry Farrell has an acute awareness of the significance of place. Starting from his earliest years, as a child growing up in 1940s Manchester, Farrell’s imagination has been shaped and inspired by the many cities in which he has lived, visited and worked. This is Farrell’s story, embracing four decades of observation of our built environment. Farrell’s anecdotes, recollections and musings take a nomadic journey through time and space. A walk down 1950s Broadway and along 1960s Charlotte Street; a visit to the Alhambra; tutorials with Louis Kahn in Pennsylvania; the significance of bungalows; continual round-the-world tours – all are vibrantly related through words and pictures, many from Farrell’s personal photo collection. The book’s second section explores Farrell’s early projects, beginning with his student thesis, moving on to the Farrell/Grimshaw work and ending with Terry Farrell Partnership’s first schemes. Projects include the now listed Blackwall Tunnel Ventilation Towers and Park Road flats, the Student Hostel and Clifton Nurseries and housing and factory designs. Concluding the book are recollections from architects and critics casting an eye back over fifty years of design. This book is Terry Farrell’s strong statement for the humanizing of spaces and the need to nurture and protect the best of what the urban environment can offer

Summary:
In July, Melbourne experienced a second wave of the virus and the introduction of further restrictions forced the city to a standstill. Workplaces, student accommodation and universities remained empty as local businesses were also required to close their premises. During this period, we witnessed public housing residents forcibly contained to several inner-city housing towers, and a small minority of anti-lockdown protestors used the Shrine of Remembrance as the backdrop for a supposed symbol of individual freedom. The structures of the state, city and its residents were again laid bare. This volume addresses many of these issues by gathering talks held prior to the pandemic alongside recent interviews. Kate Shaw shows how the recent lockdown of the housing towers in Flemington and North Melbourne reveals the government's underlying attitude towards public housing tenants. Tony Birch used the Shrine of Remembrance as the site for his talk on the Indigenous protest movement Camp Sovereignty and the significance of monuments in shaping collective values. Nicole Kalms outlines the experiences of women in Melbourne's public spaces through data gathered by XYX Lab. Sarah Lynn Rees discusses the complexities of engaging and working respectfully with Traditional Owners when intervening in the built environment. Andy Fergus & Brighid Sammon expose the failings of planning in the modern development of Melbourne, and Philip Brophy declares the general failings of the built environment profession at large.

Summary:
Throughout the twentieth century, architects in Italy have attempted to define the role of architecture under diverse political systems, from the monarchy of the first seventy years since Italian unification, to the 21 years of Fascist control, to the post-Second World War parliamentary republic. At the same time, Italy holds some of the most prized architecture and art in the world, from antiquity to the baroque, packed into its dense historic city centres, which planners and politicians have negotiated as they struggled to cope with massive migration from the countryside to the city. Diane Ghirardo addresses these and other issues by considering modern architectural production in Italy from the late nineteenth century to the present day within a clear presentation of the larger historical, social and political contexts. From the post-unification efforts to identify a distinctly Italian architectural language to the transformation of the urban environment in Italian cities undergoing industrialization in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Diane Ghirardo challenges received interpretations of modern architecture, as well as focusing on the subject of illegal building and responses to current ecological challenges. With up-to-date examples, both from the work of widely published architects in the largest cities and from throughout the peninsula, including small towns and rural areas, Italy provides a comprehensive view of the country’s modern built environment.
