Summary:
In 1976, Sol LeWitt made a large group of pencil drawings on the internal walls of the Vecchia Torre, a medieval tower in the Umbrian town of Spoleto, Italy. These fragile drawings, made on walls that are susceptible to degradation, have rarely been seen and never been documented, yet they represent one of LeWitt's major works and a milestone in American conceptual art. This groundbreaking volume brings together an extended essay on LeWitt's work by art historian Rye Dag Holmboe and a series of 60 photographic plates of the drawings by artist Joschi Herczeg, giving readers an intimate experience of this singular, site-specific work. A visual archive, this book situates LeWitt's provisional, material, bodily, and highly personal drawings in their historical, biographical, and theoretical contexts. The result is nothing less than a reconsideration of LeWitt's lifework. At once a work of conservation and a reflection on the relationship between drawing and architecture, the volume sheds new and welcome light on an unseen masterpiece.

Summary:
In a new series of original texts for Drawing Matter, artist Deanna Petherbridge provides commentary on a number of her recent pen and ink drawings. The drawings use imagined architectural imagery as a metaphorical means to deal with complex subject matter about social and political issues. Since her initial response to civil war, destroyed cities and enforced migrations through and out of Syria in the triptych ''The Destruction of the City of Homs'' Petherbridge has embarked on a series of multi-panelled drawings about migrations, walls and barriers and threatened institutions. Her commentary on ''Crossing the Abyss'' (2019) can be read in Drawing Matter’s ''Women writing architecture'' publication or online; this seminal drawing sparked off a series of related works. The Covid-19 pandemic has been her major preoccupation under lockdown, but Petherbridge is hoping that her latest on-going pieces reflecting on pollution, governmental controls and devastated landscapes prove to be the last in the series.

Summary:
Dan Graham (1942), one of the major neo avant-garde figures since the Second World War, is internationally recognized for his work in public spaces. Graham was invited to Como to take part in the centenary celebration of the birth of Giuseppe Terragni. For the occasion, he installed a pavilion entitled "Half square/half crazy" on the square in front of the Casa del Fascio. For Graham, the pavilion is a tool to critically fathom modern architecture. It is an instrument for studying the rapport between the interior (private) and exterior (public) environment as well as a way to examine the relationship of the individual to the urban scheme. His architectural structure moves from contemplative object to meeting point: a place of exchange and reflection. This volume presents an exhaustive documentation of the Como pavilion together with a selection of recent works by Dan Graham and two interviews with the artist. The dvd included records the course of the Como pavilion from its construction to inauguration.

An indispensable handbook on art in the public sphere with profoundly thoughtful texts by curators, artists, and art historians. Summary:
Artists who create collages appropriate existing images and assemble them in new ways without being bound to a style or a medium. Frauke Dannert (b. Herdecke, 1979; lives and works in Cologne and Düsseldorf) has dedicated herself to this technique since her days as a student in Düsseldorf and London. Over the course of almost a decade, she has built a considerable repertoire of forms she now variously applies in works on paper, wall paintings, projections, films, and photographs. Architecture is the basic material and subject of the collages in which she explores questions of perception as well as orientation and recollection. She dismantles structures to examine their sculptural potential. Drawing on a personal archive of found pictures and her own photographs, she selects jutties, spires, ribbon windows, or entire façades, makes multiple photocopies, and alters dimensions and proportions. Out of the resulting elements she then pieces together weightless structures with a futuristic air.

Summary:
Visual artist and theorist Suzanne Anker opened the 2007 international online conference Bioscience and Visual Culture with the following words: "The ubiquitous employment of digital technologies within the practices of research science and medicine, architecture and design, filmmaking and video production, as well as the visual and performing arts, has set ajar a multiplex of communication networks which crisscross traditional boundaries." This volume documents the virtual symposium, which was hosted by the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. and the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Herein, artists, scientists, historians, ethicists, curators, sociologists and writers discuss the myriad intersections between visual culture and the biosciences. The impressive list of international panelists includes Carl Djerassi of Stanford University, Troy Duster of NYU, Marvin Heiferman of SVA, David Freedberg of Columbia University, artist Catherine Chalmers, Art in America Senior Editor Nancy Princenthal and writer Andrew Solomon.

Summary:
In January 2015, Ellsworth Kelly gifted to the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas, the design concept for his most monumental work. A 2,715-square-foot stone building with luminous colored glass windows, a totemic wood sculpture and 14 black-and-white marble panels, the work is titled Austin, following the artist’s tradition of naming particular works after the places for which they are destined. The structure is the only building the artist designed, despite Kelly’s lifelong interest in architecture and architectural form dating back to his earliest window studies made while living in Paris in the 1940s. Envisioned by Kelly as a site for joy and contemplation, Austin is a cornerstone of the Blanton’s permanent collection and a new icon for the city in which it stands. This comprehensive volume from Radius Books provides a thorough look at the project, from its first inception to its current position as one of the artist’s most important and enduring works.

Summary:
Drawn from talks between celebrated artist Richard Serra and acclaimed art historian Hal Foster held over a fifteen-year period, this volume offers revelations into Serra’s prolific six-decade career and the ideas that have informed his working practice. Conversations about Sculpture is both an intimate look at Serra’s life and work, with candid reflections on personal moments of discovery, and a provocative examination of sculptural form from antiquity to today. Serra and Foster explore such subjects as the artist’s work in steel mills as a young man; the impact of music, dance, and architecture on his art; the importance of materiality and site specificity to his aesthetic; the controversies and contradictions his work has faced; and his belief in sculpture as experience. They also discuss sources of inspiration—from Donatello and Brancusi to Japanese gardens and Machu Picchu—revealing a history of sculpture across time and culture through the eyes of one of the medium’s most brilliant figures.

Summary:
The only woman to be represented on a Swiss banknote, Sophie Taeuber-Arp was one of the twentieth century's most innovative artists, in painting, sculpture, textiles, dance, architecture and puppetry. Often occupying this role of the only "woman"--in exhibitions, or when socializing among Dadaists and Concrete artists and elsewhere--Taeuber-Arp nevertheless went about her diverse activities as though gender obstacles were immaterial, and steadily built up a massive body of work whose consistent qualities are warmth, clarity and liveliness. Sophie Taeuber-Arp: Movement and Balance is the most complete survey of the artist's work available in any language to date. Packed with full-color illustrations of her work in all media, from her pre-Concrete abstractions to her fabrics, watercolors, canvases, reliefs and her wonderful marionettes, as well as a visual chronology with archival photographs of Taeuber-Arp posing in her costumes, or next to her works with her husband Hans (Jean) Arp, this volume demonstrates the exemplary adventurousness of her career.
