Summary:
After his untimely death at age forty-seven in 2011, Metchewais left behind a wholly original and expansive body of photographic and mixed-media work. At the center of his practice is an extensive Polaroid archive, which addresses a range of themes—including the artist’s body, performative self-portraiture, language, landscapes, and everyday subjects—and served as the source material for works in other media, such as painting and collage. Metchewais’s exquisitely layered works offer a poetic meditation on his connection to home and land, while challenging conventional narratives and representations of Indigeneity. Metchewais was a contemporary artist of stunning originality, and until now, his work has been woefully understudied and underexposed. This volume is a comprehensive overview that showcases this essential artist’s astonishing vision.

Summary:
The International Borromini Prize for Architecture honours works by young architects that are both well designed and carefully fitted to the place and the time in which they were built; works that advance both architecture and community. This volume details the works of the fifty finalists nominated for the 2001 International Borromini Prize for Architecture. The work of these finalists – all architects under forty years of age — represents a wide variety of buildings including exhibition spaces, schools, public spaces, gardens, offices, hospitals and private dwellings from North America, Europe, Asia and the Near East. Each nominee’s project is presented with color photos of the site, annotated renderings and critical commentary by the member of the committee of established architects who selected them as a finalist.

Summary:
At the age of 17, American photojournalist Ruth Orkin (1921–85) traveled across the United States alone, with nothing but her bicycle, photo equipment and $25 in her pocket. Over a four-month period, she took 350 photographs: urban scenes, numerous self-portraits and striking compositions framed by her bicycle. In each city she visited, local newspapers covered her story, interviewing and photographing her. With the unexpected publicity, she was invited everywhere, given tickets to shows and even gifted a new two-wheeler. Orkin’s stated aim upon departure was to visit the New York World’s Fair, but the transcontinental adventure proved far more decisive. It was a defining moment in her personal and artistic development, confirming the old adage: it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.

Summary:
Survival is a common practice. We cannot do it alone—we need each other. We need tools and practices that help us to connect, understand, and build in this age of climate crisis, technological upheaval, and existential pain. We need words, values, and ideas that extend beyond the human space. We need to learn and we need to unlearn. This book makes other world designs accessible through and beyond artistic practice. Rooted in experiment and based in solidarity, the works incorporate elementary questions of ecology, technology, and spirituality to demonstrate how cultural survival requires new cultural practices. With innovative texts and rich illustrations, "Manual for survival" explores the idea that we have to learn to live and think in contradictions without losing ourselves.

Summary:
Find hope to heal the relationship between our planet and all of its inhabitants, including humans, animals, and plants. Essays, visual narratives, and interviews explore practices of care and present possibilities for living differently in a fragile age. Artists and culture bearers consider bonds of love, responsibility, and reciprocity, encouraging consideration of our inherent interdependence with one another, with other creatures, and with the planet itself. This anthology looks at how life, including plant, animal, and human life, can thrive through acts of harmony. In "How to survive", women and non-binary voices present ideas of interdependence, place-based knowledge, attentiveness, liberatory imagination, mending, repair, and activism offering visions of hope and adaptation, as well as novel ways of understanding our responsibilities to the planet.

Summary:
"The architecture of the wire" explores the development of telecommunications infrastructure and its impact on the architectural and urban culture of the modern age—from poles, wires, and cables, to "micro-architectures," such as the théâtrophone and the telephone booth. Starting with the intrepid worldwide infrastructures of the late nineteenth century, Carlotta Darò proposes a new history that explores the multiple links and crossroads of such technical "things" with architecture and art. Based on extensive research of North American company archives, and French institutional ones, and drawing on secondary literature in art and architectural history, media studies, and the history of technology, Darò examines the aesthetic implications of material objects that have forever changed our urban, rural, and domestic environments.
