Case studies of professional work celebrate the healthy tradition for experimentation in this field, showcasing projects that stand out on their physical merits alone. Looking at proportions, formats, materials, printing, folding and binding, "Experimental Formats 2" offers designers an awe-inspiring selection of inspirational new ideas for practical application. It also explores exciting material innovations such as tear-proof "plastic", paper, and PVC, gelling agents, luminescent inks, concertina folds, single-screw and press-stud binding, among its many treasures. With its definitive glossary of terms, this is an indispensable guide and inspiration for the future of two- and three-dimensional print and graphic design. Summary:
"20:21 - Emerging Hong Kong Architects" presents a spectrum of 20 architectural works from 20 Hong Kong architects selected from an open competition "Emerging Hong Kong Architects" organized by Hong Kong Institute of Architects in April 2003. Architects participating in the competition were asked to respond to 'architecture' amidst this complex 21st century where multi-disciplinary frontiers are more obscure than ever, space topographies are transforming, and active hybridization is in the making. In the book, the architects write about their aspirations in their profession, present their views on architecture, and explore future scenarios; each of different modulations and sensibilities expressed in their own architectural language, and some articulated through the exploration process with various art forms. In a joint effort to navigate through the vista of architecture, this is the first publication from Hong Kong Institute of Architects bringing together a multitude of the established, the upcoming and the heretofore unknown young architects in Hong Kong. Publication in English and Chinese.

Summary:
The environmental impacts of construction are momentous. How can architects minimise these by making responsible material choices? Material choices have a global impact. The design and construction industry are responsible for 39% of all carbon emissions in the world. Despite the great desire among architects to address this, it can be difficult to compare materials directly, let alone understand the repercussions of selecting materials for use in different parts of a building or of sourcing them from across the world. Showcasing the latest thought leadership from subject experts across the industry, this primer sets out the various considerations and parameters for specifying a particular material. It empowers architects with the knowledge of which materials are available, how best to use them, and what their future holds as the industry continues to innovate. Each chapter will be devoted to a single material and will consider environmental impacts holistically, looking at health and biodiversity impacts, among other issues.

Summary:
The world is facing unprecedented challenges, from climate change and population growth, to political division and technological dislocation, to declining mental health and fraying cultural fabric. With most of the planet’s population now living in urban environments, cities are the spaces where we have the greatest potential to confront and address these problems. In this visionary book, Vishaan Chakrabarti argues for an "architecture of urbanity," showing how the design of our communities can create a more equitable, sustainable, and joyous future for us all. Taking readers from the great cities of antiquity to the worldwide exurban sprawl of our postindustrial age, Chakrabarti examines architecture’s relationship to history’s greatest social, technological, and environmental dilemmas. He then presents a rich selection of work by a global array of practicing architects, demonstrating how innovative design can dramatically improve life in big cities and small settlements around the world, from campuses and refugee camps to mega-cities like São Paulo, Lima, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, and Tokyo.

Summary:
''The Women in Revolt!'' exhibition book is a crucial exploration of the wealth and diversity of work by women artists working in the 1970s and 1980s during a period of seismic social and political change. Across a wide variety of mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, performance, film and photography, this extensive exhibition catalogue reflects on how women's needs were marginalised within mainstream culture and reveals how artists used radical ideas and methods to confront issues that will resonate with contemporary audiences — from access to healthcare and class struggles to ecological disaster, racism and misogyny. Featuring essays on feminist film distribution, the visibility of Black and South Asian women artists, Section 28 and the AIDS pandemic, Greenham Common and the peace movement, and the intersection of punk, feminism and art, ''Women in Revolt!'' celebrates the full diversity of what was a highly creative, politically engaged and determined community of women that paved the way for future generations and, ultimately, changed the face of British culture.

Summary:
What fuels and sustains activism and organizing when it feels like our worlds are collapsing? ''Let This Radicalize You" is a practical and imaginative resource for activists and organizers building power in an era of destabilization and catastrophe. Longtime organizers and movement educators Mariame Kaba and Kelly Hayes examine some of the political lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the convergence of mass protest and mass formations of mutual aid, and consider what this confluence of power can teach us about a future that will require mass acts of care, rescue and defense, in the face of both state violence and environmental disaster. The book is intended to aid and empower activists and organizers as they attempt to map their own journeys through the work of justice-making. It includes insights from a spectrum of experienced organizers, including Sharon Lungo, Carlos Saavedra, Ejeris Dixon, Barbara Ransby, and Ruth Wilson Gilmore about some of the difficult and joyous lessons they have learned in their work.

Summary:
In view of the growing number of diverse life styles, the search for flexible, adaptable floor plans has become a fundamental issue in residential building. That the continued demand in urban centres can only be responsibly satisfied by high-density housing is undisputed. More than ever before, building high-density housing is a complex, diverse and challenging task for planners and architects. This book presents international projects which document the breadth and complexity of the task, from the design of the floor plans, the development and use of resources, to the use of economically beneficial building systems. The high quality of the architecture and construction in such residential areas can be clearly seen in the uniform illustrations of the floor plans, and large-scale drawings of details which facilitate comparison. The introductory contributions discuss extensively the difficult and provocative topic of floor plan design and development. This book is a comprehensive review of the current state of residential building, the perspectives, trends and future developments.

Summary:
A new understanding of the modern city, its challenges, and why old ideas about urban renewal won’t work. "City : urbanism and its end" begins with a richly textured portrait of New Haven in the early twentieth century, a period of centralized manufacturing, civic vitality, and mixed-use neighborhoods. As social and economic conditions changed, the city confronted its end of urbanism first during the Depression, and then very aggressively during the mayoral reign of Richard C. Lee (1954–70), when New Haven led the nation in urban renewal spending. But government spending has repeatedly failed to restore urban vitality. Rae argues that strategies for the urban future should focus on nurturing the unplanned civic engagements that make mixed-use city life so appealing and so civilized. Cities need not reach their old peaks of population, or look like thriving suburbs, to be once again splendid places for human beings to live and work.

Summary:
"Chicago's famous buildings - fifth edition", completely updated and revised, covers more than a decade of extraordinary new architecture and takes a fresh look back at the city's classical legacy of Adler, Sullivan, Burnham, Root, Wright, and Mies van der Rohe. The authors have added many new descriptions and images of the most important projects in Chicago since the fourth edition, including the massive reconstruction of Grant Park around Frank Gehry's Music Pavilion, and they cover as well the current status of older buildings--some destroyed, others, such as Burnham's Reliance Building, restored and brought back to life. This book also includes expanded sections on the city's future and the development of its diverse neighborhoods, presented with new maps to serve as an even more effective walking guide. A glossary of architectural terms, an extensive index, and more than sixty new photographs of both old and new buildings bring this guide completely up-to-date.
