Summary:
Listen in on any conversation about architecture these days and you will almost certainly hear the buzzword of early 21st century building—sustainability. But just how sustainable must a building be to earn that sought-after designation? How must architects reconsider the entire design process to achieve this important goal? Taking sustainability to the next level, the emerging practice of integrated design provides the strategies to achieve high-performance, low energy, and cost-effectiveness, by a careful ground-up consideration of how the program, siting, design, materials, systems, and products of a building connect, interact, and affect one another. This approach eschews specialists working in isolation in favor of solutions that are greater than the sum of their parts.

Summary:
The term neighborhood has been reduced to a word for a convenient geographical locator. In fact, most cities claim to be compiled of neighborhoods, but this strays far from the term's original meaning - a spatial unit that people relate to. ''Neighborhood'' seeks to dispel this common misconception by integrating a complex historical record and multidisciplinary literature to produce a singular resource for understanding what is meant by neighborhood. Emily Talen provides a multi-dimensional, comprehensive view of what neighborhoods signify how they're idealized and measured, and what their historical progression has been. Talen balances perspectives from sociology, urban history, urban planning, and sustainability among others in efforts to make neighborhoods compatible with 21st century ideals.

City officials are rediscovering it as a multi-pronged (or -spoked) solution to acute, 21st-century problems, including affordability, obesity, congestion, climate change, inequity, and social isolation. As the world’s foremost cycling nation, the Netherlands is the only country where the number of bikes exceeds the number of people, primarily because the Dutch have built a cycling culture accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, or economic means. Chris and Melissa Bruntlett share the incredible success of the Netherlands through engaging interviews with local experts and stories of their own delightful experiences riding in five Dutch cities.

His goal is to show how traditional courtyard properties can be adapted for the 21st century to fulfill their potential as generators of community spaces and catalysts of social interaction. Solar energy needs a new narrative - one that says goodbye to old perspectives and only talks about the efficiency and the payback time of blue solar panels. This book is divided into three parts: the first part explains how we designed with the sun in the past, providing a visual timeline of the historical development of solar power. The second part discusses the present: Where are we now and what is solar design? It provides examples of innovative solar design in architecture, fashion, mobility and product design. Finally, the last part looks at the future and asks how we can ensure solar energy does not become the asbestos of the 21st century.

This is a compilation of the dialects of reuse. Its proposition is that an obsolete entity is not only a site of depredation, it is a condition for mediation: a location for research and design processes for meaningful change through reuse. In other words, the creative re-designation of all existing matter. This publication characterises centuries of these practices, and specifies their relevance to the 21st century. Our time will be characterised by its responses to the challenge of climate emergency, and to the need for social justice. It is a resource: lexicon of language, an expression of vocabularies, and a glossary of terms used to distinguish the transformation of the existing, into something new.

Summary:
Christ & Gantenbein Review is a new series of books edited by Swiss architects Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein, in which they explore issues and topics arising from their architectural work. Pictures From Italy, the series' initial volume, also represents Christ & Gantenbein's first architectural project after they had setup their studio in Basel. The pictures were shot during a six week journey throughout Italy in 1999. The journey itself and the images seen and taken proved to be of fundamental influence to Christ & Gantenbein's entire work since. Intending to look at historical architecture, in a quasi-unhistorical way, with the contemporary view of the 21st century, they chose Italy in search for absolute timelessness.
