Summary:
Architecture Without Content is architecture reduced to its very perimeter. The books in the series are the outcome of studios offered at EPFL. In Architecture Without Content 17, we examine Metropolitan Architecture as the embodiment of the metropolis, an urban environment which has the ambition of becoming a world in itself, absorbing and swallowing different ecologies. Metropolitan Architecture embraces this condition and tends to reproduce the overwhelming diversity of the metropolis in itself. It develops its own way of engaging with formal consequences, in an attempt to organise the abundance of information into a crystallized architectural form. Deeply embedded in the european context, the metropolis of Paris coulf never be fully realised. projects shown here are perhaps expressing this position. They are bold depictions of the envelope, consciously lacking the interior and the detailed luster.

Every year, a bevy of new phones, games, televisions, and electronic reading devices ride into our lives on a tidal wave of interactive hype. These i-products, while handy, primarily confine their interactivity to the surfaces of screens. Not exactly the kind of 'world-changing' transformation we've been promised. In this book, authors Michael Fox and Miles Kemp introduce us to a brave new world where design pioneers are busy creating environments that not only facilitate interaction between people, but also actively participate in their own right. These spaces able to reconfigure themselves in response to human stimuli will literally change our worlds by addressing our ever-evolving individual, social, and environmental needs. In other words, it's time to stop asking what architecture is and start asking what it can do.

Summary:
This provocative book argues that it is high time the practice of architecture moved away from the ego-fuelled grand visions of starchitects to a networked, collaborative, inclusive model inspired by 21st-century trends such as crowd-sourcing, open access and mass customization. But how can collaborative design avoid becoming design-by-committee? Carlo Ratti and Matthew Claudel deftly navigate this and other vital questions, considering along the way the applications of open-source architecture not only conceptually, but also in practice. Open Source Architecture is a rallying cry to students and open-minded professionals seeking new perspectives on a profession that the authors passionately believe to be moribund.

Summary:
This publication introduces the reader to the basics of architecture so they can gain everything they need to know in order to "talk about" this topic. It provides the general public with the keys to understanding architecture from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and simultaneously recalls the great edifices of earlier eras. The work is broken down into chapters that decipher a diverse range of essential concepts and answer the fundamental questions on the subject: What is contemporary architecture? When did it arise? What is its purpose? What are its newest innovations? Who are the leading architects and their most significant contributions? How can different styles be recognized? The answers to all of these questions are explained in clear and engaging text, guiding the reader to appreciate this art form that pervades all public spaces and is of universal interest. Designed as an accessible introduction, this work highlights thirty essential dates that changed the face of architecture, as well as the movers and shakers of the architecture world who have initiated and propelled movements ranging from minimalism to modernism to neo-classicism. The book is completed by a detailed chronology and a glossary of the essential vocabulary needed to talk about architecture.
