This issue offers an inside look at the architecture, landscape, and cities of Colombia, a land of fabulous natural beauty that has used architecture as a key agent in rebuilding its cities and civil society following decades of strife. A photo essay by Camilo Echavarría shows how travels through the tropical region reveal a homogenous, abstract passage of time, where architecture is conditioned by various landscapes and geographic diversity. Medellín-based architect and guest editor Camilo Restrepo Ochoa leads this journey through Colombia, showing works by fourteen practices across three generations, and neighbourhoods that are reinvigorated through mobility and urban space.

''Inventing Greenland'' is a critical and timely assemblage of stories highlighting a shifting landscape – one born from the imagination, projections, and ambitions of a wide range of actors. Geared towards a design audience, this book combines spatial sensibilities with Greenland's local cultural, social, and environmental realities. ''Inventing Greenland'' is a critical and timely assemblage of stories highlighting a shifting landscape – one born from the imagination, projections, and ambitions of a wide range of actors. Today, especially within the design discipline, there is a lack of understanding of Greenland as a complex constellation of perspectives, histories, and forces. This book aims to fill that knowledge vacuum. Geared towards architects, landscape architects, and urban planners, this book combines spatial sensibilities with local cultural, social, and environmental realities. More specifically, spatial sensibility is a way of responding to and reading beyond a diverse array of relationships in the built environment. Furthermore, ''Inventing Greenland'' provides a broad understanding of a unique island undergoing intense transformation while drawing attention to its historical and current challenges and emerging opportunities.

Summary:
The Cold War was the war that never happened. Nonetheless, it spurred the most significant buildup of military contingency this country has ever known: from the bunkers of Greenbrier, West Virginia, to the "proving grounds" of Nevada, where entire cities were built only to be vaporized. The Cold War was waged on a territory that knew no boundaries but left few traces. In this fascinating--and at turns frightening and comical--travelogue to the hidden battlefields of the Cold War, Tom Vanderbilt travels the Interstate (itself a product of the Cold War) to uncover the sites of Cold War architecture and reflect on their lasting heritage. In the process, Vanderbilt shows us what the Cold War landscape looked like, how architecture tried to adapt to the threat of mass destruction, how cities coped with the knowledge that they were nuclear targets, and finally what remains of the Cold War theater today, both its visible and invisible legacies. Ultimately, Vanderbilt gives us a deep look into our cultural soul, the dreams and fears that drove us for the last half of the 20th century.

Summary:
Shrinking cities have pushed urban design and classical city planning to their limits. This new challenge requires new approaches in which the "hard" tools of construction are joined by the "soft" tools of political, social, cultural, and communicative interventions. This book provides an international overview of experimental concepts for taking action in shrinking cities from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban construction, the media, performance, and art. The approaches range from artistic intercessions and self-empowerment projects to architectural and landscape interventions, and from strategies of media communication and city marketing to new legal regulations and utopian designs. A series of essays provides a critical discussion of both successful and failed projects of recent decades from such countries as the United States, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Austria, Russia, and Japan. Projects featured (selection): William Alsop, Crimson, Jeremy Deller, Gordon Matta-Clark, OMA, Cedric Price, Andreas Siekmann, Robert Smithson, Superflex, O. M. Ungers

Summary:
From 1960–1980, both eastern and western Europe experienced a construction boom of new dimensions. Cybernetics, the science of planning, and sociology, as well as the new possibilities offered by technology and production, paved the way to large-scale processes and systems in architecture and urban design, which favored technocratic and utopian concepts. Increasingly, architects and planners saw themselves as designers of comprehensive infrastructure and mega-structures in a technology-focused world. The authors assesses these developments on the back of a knowledge transfer between East and West. It confirms a change in attitude that can still be felt today – recession, social changes, and environmental problems led to criticism of the then contemporary concepts of modernity.
