This book is also about how Romans during the reign of Augustus, created their own history in order to account for and justify their future imperial glory, at the cost of their republican ideals. Appendices examine the ambiguous figure of Tarpeia and the archaeological discovery of a piece of wall at the foot of the Palatine Hill which has been dated to the 8th century BC.
