Summary:
Taking as a guide Banham’s habit of structuring his writings around dialectical tensions, Todd Gannon sheds new light on Banham’s early engagement with the New Brutalism of Alison and Peter Smithson, his measured enthusiasm for the ''clip-on'' approach developed by Cedric Price and the Archigram group, his advocacy of ''well-tempered environments'' fostered by integrated mechanical and electrical systems, and his late-career assessments of High Tech practitioners such as Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, and Renzo Piano. Gannon devotes significant attention to Banham’s late work, including fresh archival materials related to 'Making Architecture: The Paradoxes of High Tech', the manuscript he left unfinished at his death in 1988. For the first time, readers will have access to Banham’s previously unpublished draft introduction to that book.

Summary:
Carlo Scarpa worked on the Castelvecchio Museum in Verona intermittently between 1957 and 1975. It is perhaps his most important project. His work there draws on all his remarkable skills. It demonstrates how to work creatively within a building which already possesses a complex history. It is a magnificent example of his highly personal language of architecture, not least his incredible eye for detail and mastery of the crafting of materials. And it contains a museum exhibition which is as radical and timeless today as the day it opened in 1964 and has served as an inspiration to museum designers ever since. His most extraordinary achievement is where all these themes coincide in the astonishing display of the equestrian statue of Cangrande, perhaps the most remarkable setting for a single work of art ever made.

Summary:
Observation is the most pervasive and fundamental practice of all the modern sciences, both natural and human. Its instruments include not only the naked senses but also tools such as the telescope and microscope, the questionnaire, the photographic plate, the notebook, the glassed-in beehive, and myriad other ingenious inventions designed to make the invisible visible, the evanescent permanent, the abstract concrete. Yet observation has almost never been considered as an object of historical inquiry in itself. This wide-ranging collection offers the first examination of the history of scientific observation in its own right, as both epistemic category and scientific practice. Histories of Scientific Observation features engaging episodes drawn from across the spectrum of the natural and human sciences, ranging from meteorology, medicine, and natural history to economics, astronomy, and psychology.

''Superhumanity'' seeks to explore and challenge our understanding of ''design'' by engaging with and departing from the concept of the ''self.'' This volume brings together more than fifty essays by leading scientists, artists, architects, designers, philosophers, historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists, originally disseminated online via e-flux Architecture between September 2016 and February 2017 on the invitation of the Third Istanbul Design Biennial. Probing the idea that we are and always have been continuously reshaped by the artifacts we shape, this book asks: Who designed the lives we live today? What are the forms of life we inhabit, and what new forms are currently being designed? Where are the sites, and what are the techniques, to design others?

Summary:
This book explores the aspirations and tastes of new suburban communities in interwar England for domestic architecture and design that was both modern and nostalgic in a period where homeownership became the norm. It investigates the ways in which new suburban class and gender identities were forged through the architecture, design and decoration of the home through choices such as ebony elephants placed on mantelpieces and modern Easiwork dressers in kitchens. It argues that a specifically suburban modernism emerged, which looked backwards to the past whilst looking forward to the future. Thus the inter-war "idea" home was both a retreat from the outside world and a site of change and experimentation. It also examines how the interwar home is lived in today. The book will appeal to academics and students in design, social and cultural history as well as a wider readership curious about interwar homes.

Summary:
"Dwelling: Five Years’ Work" on the Problem of the Habitation was the third of four groundbreaking works written by the Soviet modernist architect Moisei Ginzburg (1892-1946). Originally published in 1934, this facsimile edition is the first translation of the entire book into English, detailing Ginzburg’s work over a five-year period in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Starting with a broad survey of habitation in different cultures and traditions, Ginzburg elucidates the ways in which he and his colleagues tried to adapt and apply architectural solutions to the new demands of Soviet life. This includes a detailed analysis of the Narkomfin building in Moscow, now being restored by his grandson, the architect Alexey Ginzburg; a description of his work on the commune house; and the theories behind two major housing projects: Magnitogorya and Zeleny Gorod. The period covered by "Dwelling" represents the highpoint of Constructivism.
