Summary:
As models and paradigms, patterns have been helping to orient architects since the Middle Ages. But patterns are also the basis of the history of ornament, an aesthetic phenomenon that links all times and cultures at a fundamental level. Ornament – and hence pattern as well – was abolished by the avant-garde in the first half of the twentieth century, but the notion of pattern has taken on new meaning and importance since the 1960s. Today the use of generative computerized methods is opening up new ways of talking about an idea that is becoming increasingly abstract and dynamic. Pattern explores the question: what are the notions of pattern that must be discussed in the context of contemporary architecture?

Summary:
This publication brings together essays on six contemporary Belgian photobook makers and the way they deal with space, time, movement and surface within the book and within the photographic image. The artists discussed are Tine Guns, Dirk Braeckman, Els Martens, Max Pinckers, Vincent Delbrouck and Aglaia Konrad. In recent years, the book has firmly established itself as an artistic medium for photography. Open a photobook today and with any luck you will enter a world full of visual twists and turns. A previously enclosed block suddenly becomes an open volume, and through that volume you can move and navigate. How you do so, through which spaces and at what pace, is largely determined by the book’s architecture.

Addressing the pivotal role played by speed in modern life – from art, architecture, and urbanism to graphics and design, to economics and the material culture of the eras of industry and information – Speed Limits presents a multifaceted view that is both a defence of speed and an implicit denunciation of its detrimental effect on contemporary life. Along with the essays, the book includes an anthology of nineteenth- and twentieth-century statements on speed and slowness from writers such as Charles Dickens, Friedrich Nietzsche, Marcel Proust, J.G. Ballard, Italo Calvino, and Marshall McLuhan, among others. Dividing these two sections is a visual essay by Jeffrey T. Schnapp that draws images from the archives of the CCA and the Wolfsonian.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) is most known for his terrifyingly original series of etchings of labyrinthine and megalomaniac prisons, Carceri d'Invenzione. In his own day, he was most celebrated for his Vedute, 137 etchings of ancient and modern Rome; so renowned were these startling and dramatic chiaroscuro images, imbued with Piranesi's romantic feeling for archaeological ruins, that they formed the mental picture of Rome for generations after. Indeed, Piranesi could be said to have shaped a whole strain of contemporary architecture, as well as the wider visualization of antiquity itself. In our time, he has had a direct influence on writers such as Borges and Kafka and on filmmakers such as Terry Gilliam and Peter Greenaway.

In this publication, Pamela Lee traces the complex encounters between Cold War think tanks and the art of that era. Lee shows how the approaches and methods of think tanks—including systems theory, operations research, and cybernetics—paved the way for a peculiar genre of midcentury modernism and set the terms for contemporary neoliberalism. Lee casts these shadowy(...)

Summary:
In this publication, Pamela Lee traces the complex encounters between Cold War think tanks and the art of that era. Lee shows how the approaches and methods of think tanks—including systems theory, operations research, and cybernetics—paved the way for a peculiar genre of midcentury modernism and set the terms for contemporary neoliberalism. Lee casts these shadowy institutions as sites of radical creativity and interdisciplinary practice in the service of defense strategy. Describing the distinctive aesthetics that emerged from such institutions as the RAND Corporation, she maps the multiple and overlapping networks that connected nuclear strategists, mathematicians, economists, anthropologists, artists, designers, and art historians.

Summary:
Once only a vague metaphor to describe the relationship between different social groups, the term “social distance” has acquired a precise meaning during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is the mandatory minimum distance for face-to-face contact between persons, and can vary slightly depending on the jurisdiction. Rather than asserting a diagnosis of our contemporary global emergency, this issue offers perspectives from architectural history and theory. From the great plague of Venice to cholera in the industrialising city, and from the human placenta to the 1960s bubble or the office of today, here a broad range of reflections on contagion, disease, and health can be found.

The journal explores the many intersections between circulation and storytelling.

Summary:
The seminal work by one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century, Physics and Philosophy is Werner Heisenberg's concise and accessible narrative of the revolution in modern physics, in which he played a towering role. The outgrowth of a celebrated lecture series, this book remains as relevant, provocative, and fascinating as when it was first published in 1958. A brilliant scientist whose ideas altered our perception of the universe, Heisenberg is considered the father of quantum physics; he is most famous for the Uncertainty Principle, which states that quantum particles do not occupy a fixed, measurable position. His contributions remain a cornerstone of contemporary physics theory and application.
