Summary:
Catalogue of the ''Technoscape'' exhibition, which was held at MAXXI in Autumn 2022, focused on the relationship between artistic and scientific disciplines, nowadays closer than ever, and the consequent contacts between technique, creativity, and social awareness. Architecture, engineering, and science have overlapped on numerous occasions during the 20th century. First in the heroic phase and then in the mature phase of the reinforced concrete, then with the affirmation of hi-tech construction methods in the 1970s and 1980s and finally with the eruption of digitally controlled technologies. The volume follows the dual register of the exhibition, first dealing with how technology is making architecture, urban planning, and other related disciplines more aware of their technical and scientific responsibility and capable of opening up new lines of research. The focus shifts then to structural engineering, comparing current masterpieces with previous historical modernist examples.

''Part of a city: The work of Neave Brown Architect'' explores the ethos and ideas of the Anglo-American architect Neave Brown (1929-2018), winner of the RIBA Gold Medal 2017. Part of a City gets its title from Brown’s Gold Medal acceptance speech, when he observed: ''We weren’t making housing, we were making part of a city.'' The book brings together his writing and design projects, including his celebrated large-scale urban housing work for Camden Council, and the later projects in Italy and The Netherlands, the latter undertaken in private practise with David Porter. Part of a City re-presents original critiques from the 1960s and 1970s by prominent figures such as Reyner Banham, Bob Maxwell, Christopher Woodward and Ed Jones, with new writing by architects and critics including Kenneth Frampton, Jonathan Sergsion, Simon Henley, Paul Karakuservic and Peter Barber.

Summary:
In the 1970s, New York City hit rock bottom. Crime was at its highest, the middle class exodus was in high gear, and bankruptcy loomed. Many people credit New York's master builder Robert Moses with turning Gotham around, despite his brutal, undemocratic and demolition-heavy ways. Urban critic and journalist Roberta Brandes Gratz contradicts this conventional view. New York City, Gratz argues, recovered precisely because of the waning power of Moses. His decline in the late 1960s and the drying up of big government funding for urban renewal projects allowed New York to organically regenerate according to the precepts defined by Jane Jacobs in her classic, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, and in contradiction to Moses's urban philosophy. As American cities face a devastating economic crisis, Jacobs's philosophy is again vital for the redevelopment of metropolitan life.

Summary:
In this publication, the author examines the complex relationship between performance and national identity. How do theatrical performances represent the nation in which they were created? How is Quebecois performance used to define Quebec as a nation and to cultivate a sense of 'Quebec-ness' for audiences both within and outside the province? In exploring Expo 67, the critical response to Michel Tremblay's Les Belles Soeurs, Carbone 14's image-theatre, Marco Micone's writing practices, Celine Dion's popular music, and feminist performance of the 1970s and 80s, Hurley reveals the ways in which certain performances come to be understood as 'national' while others are relegated to sub-national or outsider status. Each chapter focuses on a particular historical moment in Quebec's modern history and a genre of performance emblematic of the moment, and uses these to elaborate the nature of the national performances.

Summary:
In 1968, artist Daniel Spoerri founded Restaurant Spoerri in Düsseldorf; two years later he opened the Eat Art Gallery, where artists such as Joseph Beuys, Roy Lichtenstein and Dieter Roth exhibited objects made of foodstuffs. Taking the activities of Eat Art as its starting point, Eating the Universe gathers together artworks that have been made using edible materials, starting in the 1970s and continuing through to the present day. Over the past decade in particular, artists have evinced a growing interest in food and eating, concomitant with an increasing overall consciousness about the political, ecological, cultural and economic dimensions of what we put in our mouths. With 170 color images, Eating the Universe presents a range of contemporary artwork that explores linkages between food and the formation of identity, societal affluence, globalization and awareness of one's own body.

Summary:
Haim Steinbach is interested in the shared social ritual of collecting, arranging and presenting everyday objects and materials, an experience that extends to us all, whether in the way we arrange our homes or the way we select and wear our clothes. Travel explores Steinbach's recent exhibition at White Cube Mason's Yard, London and is comprised of two new series of works that trace a trajectory in the artist's practice that stretches from the 1970s to today. In 1976, Steinbach produced a series of works based on grid-like geometric patterns created with strips of linoleum flooring. The Linopanel works evoke a pivotal moment in Steinbach's career, when he abandoned his investigation into minimalist painting and began to work with found objects. Jenny Jaskey's text explores Steinbach's interest in collecting and the methodologies of display forms.
