Summary:

Summary:
In the very near future energy-efficient building will cease to be the exception but will be the rule. Whether insulating glazing, multifunctional facades or organic solar cells, there have been important new developments in the areas of solar thermal technology, photovoltaics, heating and ventilation technology which can make a significant contribution to the conservation of natural resources in sustainable building. They are suitable for a wide range of uses from large-scale urban-planning projects, to individual single family houses. This publication contains carefully selected articles which cover such essential topics as passive and active systems, the development of new insulating materials, and concepts for entire residential estates. They take into consideration all areas of solar building, providing information on planning methods and techniques which will enable the user to assess and apply the individual measures correctly. The essays are complemented by a selection of examples which demonstrate the technical and creative possibilities in realized projects. Solar energy can be successfully used in all kinds of projects – single family housing, office buildings, industrial buildings, and residential concepts, and this volume presents innovative solutions with full plans and large scale details, revealing the significance of an integral planning process.

Summary:
This book develops an alternative and inclusive approach –based on the hypothesis that the impact of digitalization on architectural culture is similar to the effects of the linguistic turn in philosophy– and steers clear of exclusive dichotomous approaches, without the foundational reconsideration of the discipline or its ontological conservation. The project is open and broad, which was a necessary condition for demonstrating the power of the turn brought about by digitalization. Most studies on the digital phenomenon carried out in the context of the discipline are focused on the more technical aspects, with expert discourses based on the standpoint of the optimization of existing processes. This text was inspired by a concern and a certain discomfort with respect to those positions, which are often underwritten by a positivist vision of reality. This concern gave way to the idea for a study rooted in a cultural approach to the phenomenon. Given the general tendency toward creating experts –a phenomenon that, on the other hand, is not exclusive to the field of architecture– and encapsulating knowledge, this text is meant to be based on a transversal vision, which can help non-specialist readers to understand certain complex phenomena.

Summary:
Many of the projects described in the "Handbook" have combined innovative architectural training with cross-cultural immersion, social activism, and environmental science, using design skills (and where appropriate) hands-on construction projects to confront poverty and urgent social problems. Often involving community members and students, these case studies promote maximum use of recycled or inexpensive, locally available materials, as well as lighting and energy systems that reduce utility costs and promote resource conservation. Not all the projects are specific to the City of Los Angeles, but they are examples of the types of projects CITYWORKSLA hopes to develop. Our aim is that the case studies assembled within the "Handbook" will serve as models for making architectural education relevant to urgent social problems, helping communities mobilize indigenous resources and social capital to develop long-term sustainable practices that protect, rather than erode, cultural identity, dignity, and stability.
