Summary:
Conversion, adaptation, reuse - these techniques are as old as construction itself. However, since the industrialization of the building industry and the emergence of modernism in architecture, newly constructed buildings have dominated our idea of good and progressive architecture. For decades, conversion did not play a significant role in architectural practice. Today, things have changed. The industrialization of the construction industry has led to environmental degradation, and the reform potential of modernism has been exhausted. Consequently, the existing building stock is one of the resources - perhaps even the most important resource - for the transformation of our cities. Against this backdrop, the architecture of conversion has made an unexpected comeback. Young architects in particular are providing surprising answers to the environmental and social questions of our time with their conversion projects.

Proceedings of the seventh international conference DOCOMOMO : "radical approaches often subscribe to the notion of the transcendence of time. This assertion characterize architecural modernity, with its celebrated heroes, icons, manifestoes and noble social intentions. Yet how could architecture, the art of utilitas, have entirely freed itself from the constraints of the rwentieth century? Indeed architectural modernity emerges directly from the myths, the aspirations and, even more, the changing power relations of the century past."

Summary:
The current phase of capitalist development manifests itself through a very diverse range of spatial byproducts: data centers, warehouses, container terminals, logistics parks, and many others. These architectural episodes express specific power relations, exacerbate issues of labor, and generate dramatic processes of subjectivity. Most importantly, these architectures, despite their formal and typological heterogeneity, belong to a common paradigm: the exteriorless. How can an architecture of the exteriorless be defined? How does it differentiate from examples and manifestations of the past? How do notions of legibility, form versus function, typological articulation come into play? In situating the spatialities of contemporary capitalism within the larger debate on Anthropocene, Post-Anthropocene, and Capitalocene, the book attempts to answer those questions by delineating three main characteristics for an architecture of the exteriorless: its physical and symbolic role as interface; its ambiguous condition of being at the same time local and global, isolated and connected, compressed and expanded; and, lastly, its contribution to new forms of urbanity in absence of the traditional city.

Summary:
The concepts of "Indonesian architecture" and "architecture in Indonesia" are both quite difficult to pin down. For the architecture of this small country incorporates influences from many important cultures--from India, China and the Middle East to countries in the West--and is therefore extremely multifaceted. In fact, one might reasonably ask whether a "real" Indonesian architecture actually exists, even with reference to the country's vernacular work, which is highly diverse from an ethnic perspective in and of itself. The quest for an authentic Indonesian architecture has in fact been the subject of debate among architects there for many years, especially in regards to the work has been exported to other countries--in particular, its former colonizer, the Netherlands. (In fact, there is even a name for the hybrid style that originated during that era: Indische). This very nicely designed collection of illustrated essays, which features a special section of pictures and drawings of colonial architecture, provides a real sense of the diversity of building in modern-day Indonesia--while at the same time recognizing that such a perspective cannot be productive without taking history into account. With chapters on Modern Indonesian architecture, vernacular traditions, mosques, the effect of the Chinese diaspora, hybrid historic/contemporary Balinese architecture, the colonial period, Indische architecture and Art Deco and more, this publication provides an amazing overview and a long-overdue investigation of Indische work. Preface by Aaron Betsky.

Summary:
City and country are generally regarded as opposites. But today’s landscape architecture explores both of them as a single system, making it possible to see the mutual dependency of these supposedly opposing developments. In view of massive changes in ecological systems, as well as increasing migration and the spread of unplanned human settlements, landscape architecture is also being confronted with global challenges. "Out there: landscape architecture in the global terrain" is a plea to redefine the discipline’s position. Innovative but complex approaches are presented in examples of specific projects from all over the world. Landscape architecture today commits itself to the spatial systems that will shape tomorrow’s society.

Summary:
During the Renaissance, the contest to decide the order of rank among the fine arts, architecture, painting, and sculpture was an issue that also occupied the famous architect Andrea Palladio. He was convinced that architecture spoke for itself and did not require any ornamentation through painting. Nevertheless, frescos adorn the walls and ceilings of many of his villas. In Frescos, Antonio Foscari analyzes this fresco cycle, one that not only represents an outstanding example of trompe l’oeil based on architectural structures – and which is closely modeled on Palladio’s ideals – but also sheds light on formative events within the family that commissioned Palladio. This publication contains a wealth of historical documents as well as photographs of the frescos by Matthias Schaller.

Summary:
For nearly twenty years now, Blair Kamin of the "Chicago Tribune" has explored how architecture captures our imagination and engages our deepest emotions. A winner of the Pulitzer Prize for criticism and writer of the widely read "Cityscapes" blog, Kamin treats his subjects not only as works of art but also as symbols of the cultural and political forces that inspire them. Terror and Wonder gathers the best of Kamin's writings from the past decade along with new reflections on an era framed by the destruction of the World Trade Center and the opening of the world's tallest skyscraper. Assessing ordinary commercial structures as well as head-turning designs by some of the world's leading architects, Kamin paints a sweeping but finely textured portrait of a tumultuous age torn between the conflicting mandates of architectural spectacle and sustainability. For Kamin, the story of our built environment over the past ten years is, in tangible ways, the story of the decade itself. Terror and Wonder considers how architecture has been central to the main events and crosscurrents in American life since 2001: the devastating and debilitating consequences of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina; the real estate boom and bust; the use of over-the-top cultural designs as engines of civic renewal; new challenges in saving old buildings; the unlikely rise of energy-saving, green architecture; and growing concern over our nation's crumbling infrastructure.
