Summary:
Montessori schools became trendsetting educational institutions early on, and their concept is strongly reflected in their architecture and equipment. This is the first book that comprehensively addresses architectural design, construction, and the use of materials in and the furnishing of educational spaces according to Montessori’s ideas. The book’s first part explores spatial and design principles that make up good kindergarten and school buildings. In the second part, nine case studies are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and concise texts. These examples are located in Europe (the Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain) as well as in tropical countries (Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka). Thus, this highly illustrative volume offers practical advice and a wealth of information that is of utmost importance for the design of school buildings in general.

Summary:
Carlana Mezzalira Pentimalli designed two important public buildings in the ancient city center of Bressanone, South Tyrol. Just over five hundred meters apart, the two works, the Music School, and the Public Library allowed for reasoning about the city's architecture, exercising a method made up of ideas that look at the peculiarities of places. In a historical period in which the image—by virtue of its visual impact even before its meaning—has taken on the role of the main channel of communication, the Luogo Comune ("common place")—understood both as a meeting space and as the lowest common denominator of an "essential language"—might provide the interval of reflection necessary to start asking some simple, elementary questions about what surrounds us. Within this publishing project, the authors talk about the passage of time, the concept of place and method through the anthropological approach underpinning the photographs taken by Armin Linke in several site visits made in the cities of Treviso, Brixen and Munich, between 2020 and 2021.

Edited by Jane Withers Studio, this volume presents a new perspective on global sauna culture, ritual and design. By defining the sauna’s essence and exploring how this practice is evolving for the 21st century, the authors reveal how sauna is a deeply social practice that can offer renewed benefits for health, wellbeing, and community. It explores sauna culture from ancient global traditions of steam bathing through to modern experimental sauna practices. The publication reveals the important role that design plays in creating spaces that contribute to wellbeing. Creatives such as Bauhaus Sauna Society observe sauna traditions and stage sauna lectures and workshops, developing their own rituals with a deep respect for the vernacular spirit.

Summary:
This book deals with objects of migration on the central Mediterranean route. Traces of this phenomenon include objects left more or less voluntarily by migrant people along their journey, particularly upon arrival on the shores of Lampedusa and Sicily. Since 2013, hundreds of these objects have been retrieved by Massimo Ricciardo with his colleague Thomas Kilpper, and are now part of the “Objects of Escape – Inventories of Migration’’ archive. These objects are functional to the journey, such as biscuit tins and water bottles, passports and nautical charts, but they also relate to identity and memory, such as family photographs, diaries, or a handful of earth from their homeland. In the installation “Objects of Migration, Photo-Objects of Art History: Encounters in an Archive,” Ricciardo creates a dialogue between selected objects from this archive and structures from the KHI Photothek on the other. The installation, which led to this book, raises a series of highly relevant questions about these ‘talking’ objects: who do they belong to? Are they part of the cultural heritage? What would be the appropriate artistic and curatorial approach if one decided to collect, archive, exhibit, transform them?

Summary:
After the wall between East and West Germany was destroyed in 1989, the rapid political reunification of the country was greeted with euphoria. However, psychological and cultural reunification has proved to be a much slower and more difficult process. Michael Schmidt, a lifelong Berlin resident, approaches that anxious process in part by reflecting on Germany’s past. About half of the works are Schmidt’s own photographs; the remainder are photographs he made from other photographs culled from newspapers, magazines, propaganda pamphlets, and other such sources. The meanings of historical monuments and political symbols, of particular gestures and facial expressions and styles of clothing, are left open to interpretation. Each viewer is challenged to judge whether a given image represents East or West Germany, a villain or a victim, a moment in 1935, 1965, or 1995. This project merges two artistic traditions, treating photography both as a medium for describing personal experience and as a vast, impersonal resource created by the mass media. The book explores the emotional weight of history, the power of ideological symbols, and the relationship of the individual to the body politic.
