Summary:
The distinctive geography, climate and culture of Iceland has engaged Roni Horn for over 30 years. Her intimate relationship with the island has led to a multidisciplinary series of works, including books, drawings, sculpture, texts and photographs. Located in a converted library building on a promontory overlooking the ocean in Stykkishólmur on Iceland's west coast, Vatnasafn/Library of Water incorporates Horn's abiding interest in water and weather, reflection and illumination, and the relation of these phenomena to the fluidity of human identity. The installation houses 24 glass columns containing local glacier water that reflect outside weather conditions onto a rubber floor embedded with weather-related adjectives. It also functions as a community space, a writers' studio and an oral archive of local weather reports. An introduction by co-director of the London-based nonprofit Artangel, James Lingwood, surveys Horn's substantial body of Iceland-related work alongside essays by critics Briony Fer and Adrian Searle, a selection of weather reports and writings by Horn, inspired by her experience of the enigmatic island.

Summary:
Michael Snow is one of Canada?s greatest living artists, widely acknowledged as one of the most significant figures in twentieth-century Canadian art. "Early Snow" focuses on the nascent stages of the artist?s career?- which is comparatively underexamined in art commentary and critical literature- ?and demonstrates how wide-ranging were his achievements in painting, drawing, sculpture, foldage, cinema, and photography. Snow?s first achievements may serve as a blueprint for his later career, but they also give ample proof of the creative heights he had already reached by the age of thirty-three. This book reveals a young man whose catholic interests in art and literature contributed to his uncanny ability to create profoundly original works of art. Perceptive essays by James King argue that these artworks are best approached in the context of Snow?s knowledge of modern European art (Paul Klee, Ben Nicholson, Alberto Giacometti) and contemporary American art (Willem de Kooning, Conrad Marca-Relli, Donald Judd, Marcel Duchamp), and that, ultimately, the work created during this era is about transformation.

Summary:
How the modernist avant-gardes from Dada to constructivism reconceived their roles, working as propagandists, advertisers, publishers, graphic designers, curators and more, to create new visual languages for a radically changed world. These “engineers,” “agitators,” “constructors,” “photomonteurs,” “workers”—all designations adopted by the artists themselves—turned away from traditional forms of painting and sculpture and invented new visual languages. Central among them was photomontage, in which photographs and images from newspapers and magazines were cut, remixed, and pasted together. Working as propagandists, advertisers, publishers, editors, architects, theater designers and curators, these artists engaged with expanded audiences in novel ways, establishing distinctive infrastructures for presenting and distributing their work. Published in conjunction with a major exhibition, this publication marks the transformative addition to MoMA from the Merrill C. Berman Collection, one of the great private collections of political art. Illuminating the essential role of women in avant-garde activities while mapping vital networks across Europe, this richly illustrated book presents the social engagement, fearless experimentation and utopian aspirations that defined the early 20th century, and how these strategies still reverberate today.

Summary:

Summary:
Accompanying the large-scale traveling exhibition "Ellsworth Kelly at 100", this volume celebrates the groundbreaking career of the beloved American abstractionist. This publication highlights key aspects of his multifaceted art?from his lifelong drawing practice through his later explorations of layered canvas panels. Kelly frequently revisited shapes and motifs observed throughout his career, exploring form, color, line and space through painting, sculpture, collage, drawing and photography. The fully illustrated publication highlights works from major public and private collections alongside key works from Glenstone's collection, including seminal early pieces such as "Painting for a White Wall" (1952) and "Painting in Three Panels" (1956), as well as examples from the iconic Chatham and Spectrum series. Also featured is "Yellow Curve" (1990), a monumental floor painting installation that spans nearly 1,000 square feet, on view for the first time in more than 30 years since it was conceived for an exhibition at Portikus am Main in Frankfurt. Essays by Jean-Pierre Criqui, Alex Da Corte, Suzanne Hudson, Corey Keller and others explore and expand upon Kelly’s canon. With three gatefolds and a tip-on cover image, the book also includes unpublished archival materials from the artist’s studio and the Glenstone archives.

Summary:
The 1960s and 1970s marked a period of exceptional change in Korea, propelled by rapid urbanization and modernization, and influenced by an authoritarian state at home and a globalizing world beyond. Young artists of the era were not immune to these unprecedented socioeconomic, political, and material conditions, responding with a groundbreaking and genre-defying body of avant-garde art known broadly as ''Experimental art'' (silheom misul). Both as individuals and in collectives, these artists broke definitively with their predecessors, redefining the boundaries of traditional painting and sculpture while embracing innovative and often provocative approaches to materials and process through performance, installation, photography, and video. ''Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, 1960s–1970s'' accompanies the first exhibition in North America to examine this influential but understudied period. Featuring incisive new scholarship and lavish photography of works drawn from public and private collections across the globe, the volume also brings together translations of articles, artist manifestos, and other primary sources that offer a firsthand perspective on the ideas and discourses then shaping Korean art. What emerges is the story of how this generation of young Korean artists harnessed the power of art to confront and reimagine an ever-shifting present.
