Summary:
For this series, Nobuyoshi Araki photographed the same street corner from his second-storey window during daylight hours and through every season of the year. In so doing, he diligently transfers the slow-paced life of a quiet Japanese neighbourhood into image form. The narrative that unfolds is one of schoolchildren walking home alone or in groups, men and women with office jobs hurrying to work, utility and delivery trucks, mothers with strollers, loitering grandmothers, joggers, bicycles, dogs, umbrellas, and much more. Sometimes the sun shines, or the pavement is wet, while at other times the street is filled with snow. In short, it is a hypnotic portrait of the everyday.

Summary:
This book examines the development of Vancouver’s unique approach to zoning, planning, and urban design from its inception in the early 1970's to its maturity in the management of urban change at the beginning of the twenty-first century. By the late 1990's, Vancouver had established a reputation in North America for its planning achievement, especially for its creation of a participative, responsive, and design-led approach to urban regeneration and redevelopment. This system has other important features: an innovative approach to megaproject planning, a system of cost and amenity levies on major schemes, a participative CityPlan process to underpin active neighbourhood planning, and a sophisticated panoply of design guidelines. These systems, processes, and their achievements place Vancouver at the forefront of international planning practice. "The Vancouver Achievement" explains the evolution and evaluates the outcomes of Vancouver’s unique system of discretionary zoning. The introductory chapters set the context for the study: they cover the invention and refinement of this system in the reform movement, its development of policies, guidelines, and control processes, and its translation into official development plans and neighbourhood design in the 1970's. Subsequent chapters focus upon the downtown, waterfront megaprojects, single-family neighbourhoods, the city-wide strategic planning programme (CityPlan), pressures for reform of control processes, and current downtown and inner city developments, especially issues of affordable housing, social exclusion, and multiple deprivation. The concluding chapter summarizes "The Vancouver Achievement," explains the keys to its success, and evaluates its design success against internationally accepted criteria.

Summary:
Existing patterns of urbanization are unsustainable in the long run. Current development practices consume enormous amounts of land and resources, damage local ecosystems, produce pollutants, create huge inequalities between groups of people, and undermine local community and quality of life. Unfortunately planning has itself led to many unsustainable development practices. "Planning for Sustainability" presents a straightforward, systematic analysis of how more sustainable cities and towns can be brought about. It does so in a highly readable manner that considers in turn each scale of planning: international, national, regional, municipal, neighbourhood, site, and building. In the process it illustrates how sustainability initiatives at these different scales interrelate and how an overall framework can be developed for more liveable communities.

In this edition, Daido Moriyama publishes his snaps from a trip to Paris the previous year, in connection with the Paris Photo fair. While wandering in the Saint-Michel neighbourhood, rue Mouffetard, and the area around Moulin Rouge taking pictures, his thoughts gradually drifted to memories of 30 years ago, when he lived in Paris for a brief period. Moriyama reflects on his obsession at the time to open a private gallery, which for a variety of reasons failed to become a reality, so he ended up spending his days roaming the city’s streets instead. Picture this: a 50-year-old Japanese man with a camera, totally bewildered, who speaks no French and only some broken English.

Summary:
"Eating the urban wild" leads readers on an unconventional food tour through the wild corners and everyday streets of Montreal. Natalie Doonan reimagines what it means to eat locally, inviting us to experience food not as the consumption of a single dish but as part of a vibrant, entangled ecosystem. From waterfowl hunting on the Lachine Rapids and sturgeon fishing in Lake Saint-Louis to Verdun’s cooperative gardens and aquaponics initiative, beekeeping, community cooking classes, independent grocers, and even fast-food restaurants, this work brims with sensory detail. We hear the voices of hunters, fishers, foragers, biologists, and the author’s own family and friends – all of whom reveal unexpected ways of relating to food. From these neighbourhood practices emerges a broader political and ecological resonance.

Summary:
The lived experience of cities has long been defined by motion. As urban dwellers travel to work, home, and play they carve random or predictable pathways across neighbourhoods and districts. This book investigates the urban capacity for movement, the city as a space of circulation, by taking into account not only the physical displacement of people but the circulation of cultures, things, and ideas. A series of case studies examine a range of topics, including neighbourhood gentrification, subway busking, yard sales, electronic waste, and language, refining the touchstone principle of circulation for the study of urban culture, both materially and theoretically. Contributors employ a variety of disciplinary approaches to create a richly varied picture of the multiple trajectories and effects of movement in the city.
