Summary:
Portuguese architecture, and its place on the international scene, has been receiving a lot of attention in the specialised press for some time now. The work of such great Portuguese architects as Fernando Távora, Álvaro Siza and Gonçalo Byrne has formed generations of internationally known figures, figures like Eduardo Souto de Moura, Adalberto Dias, Carrilho de Graça and Álvaro Rocha. The aim of this issue of 2G is to present the architecture of a generation of architects whose work opens up new perspectives on Portuguese architecture, despite the latter being usually submitted to the scrutiny of the masters. Young architects who would form a more or less homogeneous "third generation", one caught between its ongoing marginality in geographical terms and an attentiveness to what is happening on the international scene.

Summary:

Summary:
Design is changing rapidly. The ideological freedom gained over the past ten or fifteen years, combined with new insights in all design related fields, leads to playful experimentation and unprecedented proposals in design, architecture and art. You could say that design is spreading its wings to explore all opportunities for putting human creativity to good use. In addition the new emphasis on sound, image simulation, electronic services, product context as well as corporate image, opens up an inspiring panorama of gradually decreasing materiality. In many cases objects are no longer the aim of the design process. Rather they become illustrations of intentions, use and everything that may happen around them. This way of thinking is spreading across all disciplines of applied as well as fine arts. Design is evolving into the skill of controlling the immaterial, evoking experiences and establishing identities. This richly illustrated new publication by Renny Ramakers, co-founder of Droog Design, describes and unravels all these new developments in applied expression, using examples from design, art, architecture and of course Droog Design itself.

Summary:
Las Vegas, an artificial city brought to life in the heart of the Mojave desert, is the ultimate urban temptation: its shopping malls, theme parks and casinos offer an unceasing parade of entertainments and diversions. Its architecture combines slick, commercial seduction with a childish, cartoon-like appearance; its streets and arcades are constantly animated with visitors and residents willingly submitting to the opium of this spectacular place. Las Vegas has always fascinated those who write about the American malaise, from Tom Wolfe to J. G. Ballard, but Bégout reveals the city’s other side, adding a valuable philosophical dimension to the nightmarish, fantastic visions that haunt the imagination of novelists and film-makers. The author draws minutely detailed portraits in the form of city scenes – portraits that are often tragic and sometimes extremely comic. Bégout lets himself be dragged into this party, this ‘paradise for bastards’, as Nick Tosches calls it. For Bégout, Las Vegas is the consummation of the modern city, the ultimate destination of our urban experiments, the great supermarket of the global village. "Neither near nor far, neither here nor elsewhere, Las Vegas is distinguished by nothingness. For us it is zeropolis, the non-city that is the very first city, just as zero is the very first number." Bruce Bégout is lecturer in philosophy at the University of Picardie, Amiens, France.

Summary:
In many ways one can gauge the history of Canada by its rivers. By telling the story of one of the country's key arteries, Kapelos captures and communicates our collective past and present. By imitating the river's meandering course he guides the reader through the experiences of early explorers and the first European settlements, the continued presence of First Nations peoples, the growth of industry and tourism and the contemporary establishment of a Conservation Authority. Accompanied by period paintings, photographs, maps and historical documentation. Toronto artist Steven Evans spent a year photographing sites along the Thames and the 60 black and white reproductions included here stand on their own as elegant and perceptive landscape photography.
