Summary:
In "Killing ground", John Huddleston embarks on a photographic odyssey through the modern-day landscape of the Civil War. He pairs historical images of the conflict from sixty-two battle sites across the nation -battle-field scenes, soldiers living and dead, prisoners of war, civilians, and slaves - with his own color photographs of the same locations a century and a half later, always taken at the same time of year, often at the same hour of the day. Sometimes Huddleston's lens reveals a department store or fast-food restaurant carelessly built on hallowed ground; other images depict overgrown fields or well-manicured parks. When constrasted with their mid-nineteenth-century counterparts, these indelible images challenge the meaning of place in American culture and the evolving legacy of the Civil War in our national memory.

Summary:
In American popular imagination, the mobile home evokes images of cramped interiors, cheap materials, and occupants too poor or unsavory to live anywhere else. Since the 1940s and '50s, however, mobile home manufacturers have improved standards of construction and now present them as an affordable alternative to conventional site-built homes. Today one of every fourteen Americans lives in a mobile home. In "The Unknown World of the Mobile Home" authors John Fraser Hart, Michelle J. Rhodes, and John T. Morgan illuminate the history and culture of these often misunderstood domiciles. They describe early mobile homes, which were trailers designed to be pulled behind automobiles and which were more often than not poorly constructed and unequal to the needs of those who used them. During the 1970s, however, Congress enacted federal standards for the quality and safety of mobile homes, which led to innovation in design and the production of much more attractive and durable models. These models now comply with local building codes and many are designed to look like conventional houses. As a result, one out every five new single-family housing units purchased in the United States is a mobile home, sited everywhere from the conventional trailer park to custom-designed "estates" aimed at young couples and retirees. Despite all these changes in manufacture and design, even the most immobile mobile homes are still sold, financed, regulated, and taxed as vehicles. With a wealth of detail and illustrations, "The Unknown World of the Mobile Home" provides readers with an in-depth look into this variation on the American dream.

Summary:
A detailed history of the international modern house, illustrated with 400 photographs and architectural drawings. As the basic building block of the human environment, the house has served as an inexhaustible playground where architects experiment with theories, styles, forms, and materials. Arguably, the best and most innovative residential architecture has been conceived and realized over the past 100 yearsÑfrom the cantileveral serenity of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater to the spectacular Chemosphere, which resembles a UFO that has planted its landing gear in the Hollywood Hills. This book examines major shifts in international domestic design over the past century as it highlights a superb selection of extraordinary homes. Author Richard Weston engagingly tells the story of the twentieth-century house through eight semi-chronological design themes. From the Arts and Crafts period to the present, he covers a wide range of homes exemplifying each period and presents more than 100 benchmark dwellings with detailed architectural drawings. Weston also addresses the fascinating ways in which domestic design has both reflected and influenced the changing social climates and lifestyles of the past century, making this a book that will appeal to anthropologists, as well as architects, designers, and homeowners.

Summary:
Over the course of 13 controversial issues, influential designer Tibor Kalman (1949–1999) used his position as Editor in Chief of the international magazine Colors to challenge the status quo. Through a highly visual language, he creatively explored the world’s problems—racism, AIDS—and preoccupations—sports, shopping—to propel social change. That Colors was sponsored by the Benetton clothing company made the media experiment all the more intriguing. Following the success of Abrams’ (un)Fashion, also by Kalman, this visually powerful book features spreads from each issue and reproduces in full a facsimile of the word-free 13th and final Colors. Kalman’s previously unpublished notes and sketches, plus commentary by his partner, Maira, complete the collection.
