Summary:
In an age of digital technology and renewed anxiety about media piracy, Inherent Vice revisits the recent analog past with an eye-opening exploration of the aesthetic and legal innovations of home video. Analog videotape was introduced to consumers as a blank format, essentially as a bootleg technology, for recording television without permission. The studios initially resisted VCRs and began legal action to oppose their marketing. In turn, U.S. courts controversially reinterpreted copyright law to protect users’ right to record, while content owners eventually developed ways to exploit the video market. Lucas Hilderbrand shows how videotape and fair use offer essential lessons relevant to contemporary progressive media policy.

Summary:
"Intersubjectivity Vol. IV" explores the shifting stakes and responsibilities of intersubjective exchange—among individuals, between individuals and machines, and among machines—within increasingly networked social, political, and informational systems. While recent technological advancements highlight the advantages of decentralization, they also reveal how their functionalities limit our autonomy, guide us along paths dictated by capital, and even incite authoritarian tendencies. What tangible impacts does the digital realm impose on physical bodies, and who is most affected by these consequences? Through case studies, media analyses, object lessons, experimental texts, and other interdisciplinary methods of inquiry and critique, contributors examine our current frameworks and envision potential futures.

Summary:
The recent resurgence of interest in the breeze block seems to be more than a nostalgic yearning for modernism. Designers today are rediscovering the forgotten qualities that made it such an appealing material for mid-century architects, which also means finding new ways to enhance and exploit them. By deploying the techniques of 21st-century design, from digital tools to robotic fabrication, complex new forms and patterns are now possible. Not just visually appealing, these also temper internal and external environments in increasingly sensitive and climate-responsive ways. With editorial direction from architect Sam Marshall, the volume is both a survey and a celebration.

Summary:
Pierre-Jean Giloux seeks to create a language using sound and image that combines elements of pop culture and mass media with more 'intellectual' cultures which refer to the visual arts and architecture. This first monograph by the artist accompanies a series of videos inspired by the Metabolists, a utopist architecture movement which emerged in Japan in the late 1950s. It follows the films’ production as he explores the connections between four cities (Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kyoto) to create urban portraits combining digital with filmed or photographed images of social and urban reality. The book includes texts by Pierre Musso, Élie During, and Vincent Romagny.

Summary:
Driven by the central question "What are we learning from artists today?" the second volume of ''A series of open questions'' is informed by themes found in the work of Trinh T. Minh-ha, such as cultural hybridization and fluidity of identity, digital and migratory aesthetics, memory and landscape, decentered realities, feminist approaches to storytelling, meditations on death and myth, post-coloniality and decolonization, and women's work as related to cultural politics. The contributions to ''Why are they so afraid of the lotus?'' embody Trinh's own weariness around categorization and investigate the ways production can come from and be based in positions of unknowing.

Summary:
By reorganizing access to a wide spectrum of fundamental domains, such as education, housing, health care, or even political information, platforms are destined to become the most powerful players regulating the way we live in cities. Digital platforms such as Facebook, Uber, Airbnb, and Amazon are not only new types of enterprises but also a completely new culture of life – from the products we handle and the services we use every day to entire urban neighbourhoods that will be built by major platform enterprises in the next few years. These multi-scalar changes raise significant questions about the social potentials and risks of the architecture of these all-encompassing ecosystems.

Summary:
Shot in Dungeness, on the coast of England, this series by Berlin-based photographer Shinichiro Shiraishi is influenced by memories of his childhood visits to his grandparents’ home in the Japanese countryside. It also reflects a realisation that emerged from his time there: that natural and human-made are both part of the landscape and a part of nature. The duality of Dungeness is replicated by the book’s design – images shimmer, black pages balance white, adder stones puncture paper. To visualise the coexistence between natural and artificial objects, 90 photos have been subjected to analogue and digital processes, bringing us closer to the emotions of this peripheral place.

Summary:
We live in a hyper-mediated world, drowning in an ocean of images and information. ''Conflict in my outlook'' gathers contemporary artworks and new texts that shed light on human experience in an era of ubiquitous networked technologies. From digital intimacies and the weaponization of social media to invisible power structures, clickwork, and the 'gig' economy, contributors seek a better future in the context of algorithmic racism, machine learning, and the new colonial frontiers of surveillance capitalism. The anthology, which is published on the occasion of a two-part exhibition series at UQ Art Museum, focuses on art as a means to explore the techno-politics that define our age.
