Summary:
Muriel Cooper (1925–1994) was the pioneering designer who created the MIT Press colophon (or logo)—seven bars that represent the lowercase letters “mitp” as abstracted books on a shelf. She designed a modernist monument, the encyclopedic volume The Bauhaus (1969), and the controversial first edition of Learning from Las Vegas (1972). She used an offset press as an artistic tool, worked with a large-format Polaroid camera, and had an early vision of e-books. Cooper began her four-decade career at MIT by designing printed flyers for the Office of Publications; her final projects were digital. This illustrated volume documents Cooper’s career in abundant detail, with prints, sketches, book covers, posters, mechanicals, student projects, and photographs, from her work in design, teaching, and research at MIT.

Marking the first in a new series of exhibitions, this project from the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art highlights three design studios with biochemistry and biology at the core of their practice. London-based ecoLogicStudio focuses on climate and carbon neutrality, and how photosynthesis can be incorporated into architecture. Atelier LUMA is the research design branch of LUMA Arles, mapping and identifying the local resources of the unique bioregion of Camargue to build its own studio. Finally, the Ithaca, New York–based Jenny Sabin Studio uses theory and knowledge from biology and mathematics to help develop new digital tools and structures that work in interaction with people and nature. This catalog highlights each firm’s most important projects alongside three conversations between the studio founders and an expert architectural

'' This book explores situations which challenge this division between design and construction. It investigates the growing prominence of making architecture through a series of case studies: design-build pedagogies, material experimentations in the design process, the use of reclaimed materials, digital fabrication, the crafts attached to raw-earth construction, or practices of self building.

Summary:
The research exhibition ''BioMedia: The age of media with life-like behavior'' at ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe presents works that intersect the realms of art, science, and technology. The media systems on show, which range from digital, computer-generated, and computer-simulated systems to complex adaptive robots and interactive installations, simulate various different aspects of life beyond movement and raise fundamental questions about the interaction between human and non-human beings and what inorganic life might mean in the future. The term ''BioMedia'' or biomimetic media is used here to refer to media that exhibit life-like forms of behaviour. Over sixty artists have contributed works illustrating the exhibition themes. The book accompanying the show focuses on the artworks, which are described in detail in richly illustrated texts.

Summary:
This volume addresses the widespread tendency to discard broken items rather than to refurbish them. Despite the negative ecological effects of overconsumption, overproduction and waste, the habit of replacing rather than repairing goods has persisted and even worsened over recent decades. To counteract this trend, students at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and ETH Zurich have been developing imaginative concepts for repairing a wide variety of objects, applying them both manually and by using digital techniques such as 3D printing. Beyond restoration, many projects develop and improve the repaired objects constructively, materially, or even in terms of design, lending them new value. This publication presents a variety of approaches and projects, plus essays by notable personalities from the fields of architecture, preservation, materials science, design, manufacturing and craft.
