Summary:
No Man’s Land’ is a surreal and terrifying place, a world at once horrific and hilarious. We know that human beings people these places, but they have scurried away, leaving behind nothing but furniture, machines, instruments, walls, floors, lighting – the impersonal, neutral artefacts of modern existence. An air of claustrophobia hangs over everything: there is no way in and no way out of such stifling spaces, either physically or ideologically. We need a good deal of persuading that environments as extraordinary as these actually exist in the real world. But they do, and for thirty years Lynne Cohen has been searching them out and recording them. She collects fragments of the real world photographically and turns them into found installations. ‘From the first photographs I made’, she has said, ‘I felt the world couldn’t be like this. It seemed as if it was full of finished works of art.’ Her fascination with synthetic materials adds a further distancing coldness to these disturbing images. These are images that force us to ask ourselves what kind of world we have made. "No Man’s Land" includes a critique of Cohen’s work by photographic curator Ann Thomas, an interview with the photographer, and a preface by Pierre Théberge and William A. Ewing

Summary:
Wherever and whenever state and church, state and autocracy, political and architectural ambition have met and loved one another hungrily, domes have raised their imperious, lofty heads. At once magnificent and messy, old-fashioned and ultra-modern, opulent and squalid, London is something of a mongrel city, cross-bred over the centuries from cut-throat commerce, high finance and unrestrained creativity. For all its inventiveness, however, it is now also a city unable to provide its citizens with decent public transport, housing or services, beset and betrayed by governments who take from it but refuse to give back. In the lead-up to the much-hyped Millennium, a fortune was spent on lavish building projects—giant wheels, great courts, titanic art galleries, ambitious museums, a Brobdingnagian dome—but little in the way of public services, intelligent urban planning and infrastructure except by default. Has the right kind of money been spent on the wrong sort of projects? Who, in this pluralistic age, will cut through the layers of bureaucracy to restore some of the city’s unruly splendour? In this elegant and polemical book, the architecture critic Jonathan Glancey explores London’s Millennial follies and asks how and where London might now channel its energies. Combining anecdote and analysis with a sustained critique of the way the city is governed and financed, he draws a detailed picture of the state London’s in and speculates on how it might be transformed.

Summary:
This book explores in depth how, when, where, and by whom the most important North American bridges were built. Over 185 of Plowden's photographs allow us to dwell on the most important scientific and aesthetic qualities of each bridge. In addition, Plowden has included original designs and drawings of structures - some unbuilt, gone, or dramatically altered - illuminating less obvious aspects of these engineering marvels and introducing us to bridges we otherwise would never have seen. In his extensive text, Plowden vividly records the discoveries, misconceptions, struggles, failures, and triumphs of the men who dedicated their energies to bridge design and construction. In the more than twenty-five years since this classic book was first published, bridges have been lost, and others have been built; some of the best examples of new bridges are included in this new, revised edition. All the photographs have been reprinted to achieve the best duotone reproduction.

Summary:
In this new collection, Sorkin reviews the state of contemporary architecture and surveys the dramatic changes in the urban environment of the past decade. From New York to New Delhi, from Shanghai to Cairo, Sorkin offers a sweeping assessment of the impact of globalization, environmental degradation, electronic media, rapid growth, and the legacies of modernist planning. Whether laying out, manifesto-like, eleven necessary tasks for urban design, providing a fresh take on the Disneyfication of Times Square, grappling with sprawl, or blasting the nostalgic prescriptions of "new urbanist" communities, Sorkin makes a compelling argument for an architecture and urbanism firmly grounded in both artistic expression and social purpose.
