Summary:

Has architectural criticism disappeared for good or has it adapted to the pressures, exigencies, and fashions of the present? Its demise may be due to fibrillation or asthenia, to excessive sharp judgment, condemnation, and critique, or, conversely, to a resigned acceptance of reality. Summary:
Has architectural criticism disappeared for good or has it adapted to the pressures, exigencies, and fashions of the present? Its demise may be due to fibrillation or asthenia, to excessive sharp judgment, condemnation, and critique, or, conversely, to a resigned acceptance of reality. But should the eclipse of criticism today be regarded as lamentable? Might not its lack be hailed as a new phase of rigor and objectivity? The objective of both the lecture series "The future or the eclipse of criticism" presented at the MAXXI Museum in Rome, and the eponymous symposium which took place at the University of Pisa’s School of Engineering was to identify those figures, exhibitions, publication projects, and paradigmatic constructions that have either supported or directed particular critical approaches.

Summary:
The Austrian Pavilion at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale focuses on housing. Curators Michael Obrist, Sabine Pollak, and Lorenzo Romito contrast the top-down model of social housing construction in Vienna with the bottom-up model of self-organization in Rome’s civil society. What can a system organized at state or municipal level learn from an approach based on informal activism, and vice versa? Could a synthesis of the two models perhaps be a starting point for overcoming the acute lack of affordable housing in our cities? And what does good housing and a better life involve today anyway? In the accompanying issue of ARCH+, the developments in Vienna and Rome are discussed in essays, discussion formats, and numerous infographics.

Summary:
In an age of digital cameras and computer renderings, the tradition of drawing and assembling an architectural sketchbook seems at once either willfully eccentric and or charmingly retrograde. But its profound importance to architecture and urban planning endures. Italian Cities and Landscapes is a compact and lovely sketch book created by architect William H. Fain during a six month fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. Exploring the Italian city and countryside by bicycle, Fain used colored pencil to sketch scenes of the street life, the magnificent landscapes, and the architectural marvels of Italy. Italian Cities and Landscapes shows that for the creative individual, documenting travels through drawing continues to be a valuable means of learning to see, understand, and design.

Summary:

Summary:
Here we encounter a writer deeply engaged with narrative in situ—a traveler moving through beloved streets, sometimes accompanied, sometimes solo. With her, we see, anew, the Venice Biennale, the Lagoon, and San Michele, the island of the dead; the Piazza di Spagna, the Tiber, the view from the Gianicolo; the pigeons at San Marco and the parrots in the Doria Pamphili. As a poet first and foremost, Zarin’s attention to the smallest details, the loveliest gesture, brings Venice and Rome vividly to life for the reader. The sixteenth book in the expanding, renowned ekphrasis series, ''Two cities'' creates space for these two historic cities to become characters themselves, their relationship to the writer as real as any love affair.

Summary:
This exhibition catalogue examines Palladio's personal development and architecture, his influence on others achieved through his I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura, the subsequent dissemination of his teachings through translations and pattern books in Britain and America, and the influence of Palladianism on architecture in the New World. The promulgation of Palladian principles resulted in new and original interpretations that took firm hold in America, influencing both grand formal buildings and smaller utilitarian structures. The drawings are supported by numerous architectural models. Three large examples--the Pantheon, Villa Rotunda, and Jefferson's unrealized design for the White House--programmatically illustrate the journey from Rome to America. Smaller models along with rare architectural texts and pattern books, through which Palladio's ideas were primarily transmitted, reinforce the themes of the book.
