Due to an acute shortage of housing after the war, he developed a new type of building—multifunctional blocks of flats that combined a large number of apartments on a small plot. These buildings included a roof landscape, as well as such urban structures as schools, cinemas, pharmacies and grocery stores. Le Corbusier’s revolutionary idea of a vertical city offered novel solutions to urban planning issues and social, aesthetic and structural challenges. The five Unités, now in various states of repair, have been photographed by photographer Arthur Zalewski (born 1971). This catalog collects Zalewski’s photographs alongside texts by curator Peter Ottmann, Arthur Zalewski and Anne König.

À travers ses images, Alexandre Guirkinger a voulu partager sa fascination pour cette extraordinaire relique d’une modernité déjà ancienne. Les bunkers choisis et photographiés sont ceux dont la forme, la situation ou la silhouette entraînent l’image vers autre chose que l’enregistrement matériel d’une frontière : une sorte de décor de science-fiction, une trace de land art, une architecture moderniste, un géoglyphe contemporain. Techniquement simple, mais socialement complexe, la logique du projet procède autrement. Pour elle, le paysage n'est pas un objet de science, mais une représentation collective à construire avec les populations concernées. La démarche opère par "bricolage" d'histoires et de lieux d'ancrage banals chemins creux, bornes, toponymes, édifices, etc. assemblés dans un "récit commun" dévoilant le territoire et mettant en continuité un passé pluriséculaire avec les questions du jour. La logique de la protection, adaptée aux paysages exceptionnels, est inopérante pour les paysages ordinaires, qui sont pourtant l'écrasante majorité. Techniquement simple, mais socialement complexe, la logique du projet procède autrement. Pour elle, le paysage n'est pas un objet de science, mais une représentation collective à construire avec les populations concernées. La démarche opère par "bricolage" d'histoires et de lieux d'ancrage banals chemins creux, bornes, toponymes, édifices, etc. assemblés dans un "récit commun" dévoilant le territoire et mettant en continuité un passé pluriséculaire avec les questions du jour. Réflexion théorique et professionnelle, l'ouvrage apporte un témoignage rare sur des pratiques courantes d'aménagement local, ces gestes toujours recommencés d'appropriation collective qui constituent un territoire en "paysage", une population en "collectivité" et cette collectivité en "auteur" de son propre destin.
