The Peter Reyner Banham Fellowship program at Buffalo was established in 2000 to celebrate Banham's legacy at Buffalo, and, most importantly, to project new work that is inspired by Banham's foundational body of scholarship on material and visual culture. Each year, the Banham Fellow engages the students and the faculty of the department through research, creative activity, and teaching, and presents that body of work through an exhibition and a lecture. In this publication, the projections of the past five Banham Fellows are documented: Jonathan Solomon (2005-2006), Sergio Lopez-Pineiro (2006-2007), Eva Franch-Gilabert (2007-2008), Michael Kubo (2008-2009), Brian Tabolt (2009-2010). This document is a testament to the reach of Banham's visions and to the visionary work of the Fellows at Buffalo.

Two of his major projects—the pavilion built at the World Exhibition in Barcelona in 1929 and the Haus Tugendhat in Brno, Czech Republic, completed one year later—became icons of Modernist style. The Pavilion of the German Empire was dismantled at the end of the exhibition in Barcelona and underwent a large-scale reconstruction in 1986 to mark the architect’s 100th birthday. The Haus Tugendhat, on the other hand, has largely survived despite seventy years of neglect. It was only between 2010 and 2012, however, that it could be meticulously restored to its original state. To mark these reconstructions, the architecture photographer Klaus Kinold has portrayed both buildings in accurate, detailed photographs. To complete the volume, the historians of architecture Wolf Tegethoff and Christoph Hölz outline the construction histories of the two projects, and pursue the question of justification for the reconstruction of modern architecture.

Since 2017, Bastien Aubry continues his sculptural practice as a solo artist. Bastien Aubry's artistic approach consists of alienating everyday objects in a playful and ironic way. His mischievous works evoke fascinating visual effects by mixing design, art history and pop culture. His creations celebrate the poetry of failure and the beauty of the less than perfect, an accident by design. The artist stages reality in his own world, exposing everyday absurdities and toying with the boundaries set by traditional artistic practices. Three-dimensional works are constrained by the material they are made of, and for Bastien Aubry, it is most important to recognize the physical property of each material in order to experiment with visually exiting effects. To exaggerate, enlarge, stack, fill, crush… There is always an element of surprise and spontaneity present in his oeuvre.

This question is further complicated when looking at emerging artists who have grown up under intense globalization. In Canada, specific identities are difficult to pinpoint and, when they are, they are often portrayed as problematic stereotypes bound up in a colonialist history. “Alternorthern” was conceived in the tension that exists between nationalism, globalization, and individualism: the exhibition is a product of both cultural values and cultural hybridism. The nine artists in this exhibition function similarly in that they use their own identities to make gestures that transgress time and space. Each artist in the exhibition is Canadian, yet each creates work that speaks to issues pertinent to both Canadian and global geographic and political landscapes. The exhibition will open during the 2010 Olympics, when many of the stereotypes, symbols, themes, and political workings of Canada will be disseminated into the U.S. media. As Canada is in the throes of presenting its tourist identity on the international stage, this exhibition can function as a way of transgressing this identity. Thus, the curators see this exhibition not as a response to the event of the Olympics but as an opportunity to subvert and play with cultural dialogue that will exist during this time.
