In Florencia Pita and Jackilin Bloom’s studio, 'Easy Office', students experimented with ways of generating new spatial, formal, material, and narrative ideas through the processes of collecting, collaging, and casting everyday objects. The studio considered notions of the creative office and the workplace based on the unexpected space, form, and materiality that emerged from these processes. Students in Omar Gandhi’s studio, 'Where the Wild Things Are', designed a campus of creatures for Rabbit Snare Gorge on the north coast of Cape Breton Island. They focused on a series of interventions that used vernacular approaches to produce specific functions, develop a process or ideology, and frame sensory experience. The students explored how Nova Scotia’s regional architecture takes advantage of phenomenological opportunities available on the site and inspires new responses to climate and geography.

One day in 1973, acting on a whim, Daniel Meadows and Martin Parr, final year photography students at Manchester Polytechnic, attended a Granada TV open day to view the newly reconstructed set of Coronation Street. There they learned that location filming of the popular soap opera was shortly to end. This was because wholesale regeneration of Salford’s housing stock was sweeping away the ranks of Victorian terraced streets and their paving of stone setts, the very features which defined how a TV audience expected ‘the north’ to look. If the drama were to continue to look like itself, exterior scenes would henceforth be shot only at the studio. This discovery inspired Meadows and Parr to go looking for a former classic ‘Street’-like location to document before the bulldozers moved in. They settled on June Street in Ordsall, twenty houses which were still fully occupied. Over eight weeks or so, using the college Hasselblad and a bright photoflood lightbulb (screwed into the ceiling socket), they photographed each household — adults, children, dogs, cats, the budgie and, in one case, a tortoise — sitting together in their front rooms. When it was all done, they invited everyone to take part in a group photograph.

Launched by the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, this project challenged designers and architects to imagine a world in which sustainable and environmentally friendly materials, technologies, and techniques were considered important elements of housing for low- and moderate-income families. A SECCA-sponsored open competition in 2003 drew 440 entries from the United States and six other countries, all using Habitat for Humanity's three- and four-bedroom house plans as a point of departure for the design of affordable and environmentally friendly housing. This book, published in conjunction with a traveling exhibition, documents the 25 prize-winning designs as well as fifty other selected submissions with 396 colour illustrations. The accompanying text includes Michael Sorkin's essay connecting democratic values to quality of housing, Ben Nicholson's satiric critique of American excess, Steve Badanes's insights on the social responsibilities of architects, and HOME House Project Director David Brown's overview of the project and its continuing evolution.
