Summary:
In April 2003 010 Publishers of Rotterdam had been active for twenty years. During those two decades they have published five hundred books on architecture and design. This specialization reflects the enthusiasm of 010's founders, Hans Oldewarris and Peter de Winter, trained as an architect and an urban designer respectively at Delft University of Technology. Besides over one hundred monographs by and about Dutch architects, with Rem Koolhaas's "S,M,L,XL" as a provisional peak, 010 have published books on more wide-ranging architecture, interior design, photography, industrial design, graphic design, and the visual arts. These aspects include a keen interest in the theory and history of architecture and design. The lion’s share of this book is taken up with a catalogue spanning the period 1983-2003. Exhaustively annotated and illustrated, it gives not just the technical details of each book such as size, format, and binding style but also the authors, editors, photographers, graphic designers and printers. A brief description of the contents rounds off each entry. Comprehensive indexes give insight into who contributed to which book and in what way. In their introductory essay Ed Taverne and Cor Wagenaar give a picture of the practice of architectural publishing in the Netherlands during those years.

Summary:
The teachings of Mies van der Rohe and his respect for the effects of space and material has had a great influence on the American architect and artist Gene Summers. Thanks to the technology of the day and Summers’ own creative talents, he was able to help transform Mies’ visions into built structures. For 16 years Gene Summers was a close colleague of Mies, heading his office and working with him on many projects including the Seagram Building in New York, Bacardi’s office buildings in Cuba and Mexico, and Krupps’ offices in Essen. Also working independently, Summers created projects for C.F Murphy Associates, such as the McCormick Convention Centre and the Malcolm X College in Chicago. Later with Ridgway Limited, he was responsible for the the acclaimed restoration of the Biltmore Hotels in Los Angeles. Familiar with bronze as a building material, Summers used his knowledge to design elegant furniture and household objects before devoting himself entirely to producing artworks using this medium. This volume is the first presentation of Gene Summers’ architectural and artistic work, surveying the many areas in which he was active. Phyllis Lambert, founder of the Canadian Centre for Architecture president of the International Confederation of Architectural Museums, provides an enlightening introduction to his work.

Summary:
Contemporary engagements with documentary are multifaceted and complex, reaching across disciplines to explore the intersections of politics and aesthetics, representation and reality, truth and illusion. Discarding the old notions of “fly on the wall” immediacy or quasi-scientific aspirations to objectivity, critics now understand documentary not as the neutral picturing of reality but as a way of coming to terms with reality through images and narrative. This book collects writings by artists, filmmakers, art historians, poets, literary critics, anthropologists, theorists, and others, to investigate one of the most vital areas of cultural practice: documentary. Their investigations take many forms—essays, personal memoirs, interviews, poetry. Contemporary art turned away from the medium and toward the world, using photography and the moving image to take up global perspectives. Documentary filmmakers, meanwhile, began to work in the gallery context. The contributors consider the hybridization of art and film, and the “documentary turn” of contemporary art. They discuss digital technology and the “crisis of faith” caused by manipulation and generation of images, and the fading of the progressive social mandate that has historically characterized documentary. They consider invisible data and visible evidence; problems of archiving; and surveillance and biometric control, forms of documentation that call for “informatic opacity” as a means of evasion.

Summary:
Writing in the context of two Polaroid Corporation bankruptcies, not to mention the obsolescence of its film, Peter Buse argues that Polaroid was, and is, distinguished by its process—by the fact that, as the New York Times put it in 1947, “the camera does the rest.” Polaroid was often dismissed as a toy, but Buse takes it seriously, showing how it encouraged photographic play as well as new forms of artistic practice. Drawing on unprecedented access to the archives of the Polaroid Corporation, Buse reveals Polaroid as photography at its most intimate, where the photographer, photograph, and subject sit in close proximity in both time and space—making Polaroid not only the perfect party camera but also the tool for frankly salacious pictures taking. Along the way, Buse tells the story of the Polaroid Corporation and its ultimately doomed hard-copy wager against the rising tide of digital imaging technology. He explores the continuities and the differences between Polaroid and digital, reflecting on what Polaroid can tell us about how we snap photos today. Richly illustrated, The Camera Does the Rest will delight historians, art critics, analog fanatics, photographers, and all those who miss the thrill of waiting to see what develops.

Summary:
London has always been known for its iconic buildings, but the city has recently witnessed an explosion of new architecture from the world’s most acclaimed architects. This breathtaking volume offers a fascinating look at the city’s rapidly changing skyline and celebrates the enormous array of styles, materials, and cutting-edge technology that have been employed by today’s leading architects. The projects profiled here—brought to life by photographer Richard Schulman—range from dance and aquatic centers to world-class museums and global office headquarters. The book includes Rafael Viñoly’s “Walkie-Talkie” and “The Gherkin” by Foster + Partners, as well as Renzo Piano’s mixed-use skyscraper, “The Shard,” across the Thames. Tucked into a medieval alley, OMA’s New Court Rothschild Bank nimbly juxtaposes contemporary features with more traditional ones. Meanwhile, alongside St. Paul’s Cathedral, Jean Nouvel’s One New Change cleverly plays off its storied environs with an ingeniously constructed glass block that allows for multiple views of the iconic church. From the Tate Modern extension to the Emirates Airline tram, and from the Peckham Library to the US Embassy building, no new stone is left unturned or unremarked upon. This book demonstrates how one of the world’s oldest cities manages to feel eternally new and exciting.

The Whole Earth Catalog was a cultural touchstone of the 1960s and 1970s. Between 1968 and 1971, almost two million copies of its various editions were sold, and not just to commune-dwellers and hippies. Millions of mainstream readers turned to the Whole Earth Catalog for practical advice and intellectual stimulation, finding everything from a review of Buckminster Fuller to recommendations for juicers. This book offers selections from eighty texts from the nearly 1,000 items of "suggested reading" in the Last Whole Earth Catalog. Illustrated and meticulously documented, this fascinating selection of texts cited as 'suggested reading' in the Whole Earth Catalog gives us a fresh, new look at this bible of a generation. Wonderful juxtapositions abound: Buckminster Fuller and Wendell Berry; Timothy Leary and Lao-Tzu; Thoreau and Marshall McLuhan; the Boston Women's Health Collective and Norbert Wiener; Nicholas Negroponte and Kakuzo Okakura; and Margaret Mead and James Baldwin (their A Rap on Race). At once libertarian and communitarian, practical and mystical, scientific and hands-on, Whole Earth Field Guide reveals the astonishing energy and spirit that motivated thousands of young people to challenge the status quo and to grapple, with remarkable prescience, with issues such as ecology and information technology that still confront us today.

Summary:
Accelerationism is the name of a contemporary political heresy: the insistence that the only radical political response to capitalism is not to protest, disrupt, critique, or détourne it, but to accelerate and exacerbate its uprooting, alienating, decoding, abstractive tendencies. "#Accelerate" presents a genealogy of accelerationism, tracking the impulse through 90s UK darkside cyberculture and the theory-fictions of Nick Land, Sadie Plant, Iain Grant, and CCRU, across the cultural underground of the 80s (rave, acid house, SF cinema) and back to its sources in delirious post-68 ferment, in texts whose searing nihilistic jouissance would later be disavowed by their authors and the marxist and academic establishment alike. On either side of this central sequence, the book includes texts by Marx that call attention to his own ‘Prometheanism’, and key works from recent years document the recent extraordinary emergence of new accelerationisms steeled against the onslaughts of neoliberal capitalist realism, and retooled for the twenty-first century. At the forefront of the energetic contemporary debate around this disputed, problematic term, "#Accelerate" activates a historical conversation about futurality, technology, politics, enjoyment and capital. This is a legacy shot through with contradictions, yet urgently galvanized today by the poverty of ‘reasonable’ contemporary political alternatives.

Summary:
This ambitious book describes the many ways in which invention affects the environment (here defined broadly to include all forms of interaction between humans and nature). The book starts with nature itself and then leads readers to examine the built environment and then specific technologies in areas such as public health and energy. Each part focuses on a single environmental issue. Topics range widely, from the role of innovation in urban landscapes to the relationship among technological innovation, public health, and the environment. Each part features an essay by a historian, an essay by a practitioner, and a "portrait of innovation" describing an individual whose work has made a difference. The mixture of historians and practitioners is critical because statements about the environment inevitably measure present and future conditions against those of the past. Early in the industrial revolution, smoke stacks were symbols of prosperity; at its end they were regarded as signs of pollution. Historical examples can also lead to the rediscovery of an old technology, as in the revival of straw bale construction. As it explores the history of invention for the environment, the book suggests many new ways to put the past to use for the common good.

Summary:
In The Network Society, Darin Barney provides a compelling examination of the social, political and economic implications of network technologies and their application across a wide range of practices and institutions. Are we in the midst of a digital revolution? Have new information and communication technologies given birth to a new form of society, or do they reinforce and extend existing patterns and relationships? This book provides a clear and engaging discussion of these and other questions. Using a sophisticated model of the relationship between technology and society, Barney investigates both what has changed, and what has remained the same, in the age of the Internet. Among the issues discussed are debates concerning the emergence of a 'knowledge economy'; digital restructuring of employment and work; globalization and the status of the nation-state; the prospects of digital democracy; the digital divide; new social movements; and culture, community and identity in the age of new media. This book provides an accessible resource for a thoughtful engagement with life in the network society. It will be essential reading for students in sociology and media and communication studies. This will be a valuable textbook for undergraduate students of sociology and media and communication studies.

Summary:
Far from passive containers or neutral fields where particular objects are to be desired, bought, and sold, department stores constitute spaces formative for both shopping behaviour and culture. In the constantly changing environment, in an interplay between retail strategies and responses to customer behaviour, a negotiation is going on of what and who is of importance, who is to be given exposure, and what needs to be hidden. As such, department stores form intricate examples of how shopping spaces are sites of negotiation of public culture, and of reproducing or creating norms and ideas in society. Inspired by the work of Baudrillard and Butler, Wigley, and Williamson, this book investigates how department stores work as situating structures, in which we not only find what we want, but what we should want, who we are, how our society is arranged, and our role in it - an investigation that challenges our understanding of architecture and planning as well as of society in general. Daniel Koch is a researcher and teacher at the School of Architecture, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. Structural Fashion is his doctoral dissertation that develops and improves the theories of his former work on spatial systems as producers of meaning, refocusing the main inquiry onto departement stores.
