The exhibition features the newly commissioned work Infestation Piece (Musselled Moore) (2007-8), a piece that collapses the history of Henry Moore's sculpture, Warrior with Shield (1953–4), with the zebra mussel infestation in Lake Ontario. This publication is a companion piece to Cuttings (2005), but stands on its own with essays focusing on the commissioned sculpture and new works made since Starling won the Turner Prize in 2005. Autoxylopyrocycloboros (2006), Nachbau (Reconstruction) (2007), and Wilhelm Noack oHG (2006), are accompanied with explanatory texts and colour illustrations.

Neighborhoods where people look out for each other, eat together, make art and build community are healthier, happier, greener and cleaner. Journey around the world to discover how people have been dreaming up new ways to ensure their cities and neighbourhoods are creative, inclusive and environmentally sustainable. These placemaking ideas can be big-- like the skateboard park built on the grounds of an orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya-- or small-- like the painted rock snake that winds along a beach in Toronto, Ontario. Together, we can create public spaces where everyone belongs. Includes a list of ideas for children to get involved in their neighborhoods, along with a glossary and sources for further reading.

Summary:
From 1941 to 1944, the Polish Jewish photographer Henryk Ross (1910–1991) was a member of an official team documenting the implementation of Nazi policies in the Lodz Ghetto in Poland. Covertly, he captured on film scores of both quotidian and intimate moments of Jewish life. In 1944, he buried thousands of negatives in an attempt to save this secret record. After the war, Ross returned to Poland to retrieve them. Although some were destroyed by nature and time, many negatives survived. Memory Unearthed presents a selection of the nearly 3,000 surviving images—along with original prints and other archival material including curfew notices and newspapers—from the permanent collection at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Summary:
"The architecture of Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company is a monograph on the urban design and architecture firm started by Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk in 1980 and is now known simply as DPZ. Credited with popularizing small towns and villages as welcome alternatives to the bleak monotony of the suburbs, DPZ champions vernacular architecture (traditional buildings with ties to local culture) in neighborhoods that share the same common features that made small-town living so livable. This book illustrates representative buildings, mainly houses, that make up some of these communities in such places as Seaside, Florida, Kentlands, Maryland, and Markham, Ontario. In addition, the book showcases individual buildings that demonstrate DPZ’s reinvigoration of a simple vernacular architecture, including the Hibiscus House in Coconut Grove, Florida, and the Carambola Villas in St. Croix.

Summary:
In "Neighbourhood: Designing a Liveable Community", renowned architect, professor and urban planner Avi Friedman describes the planning of a new neighbourhood in Middlesex Centre, a rural municipality in southern Ontario. Friedman explores how good and bad design affect our homes and civic life. In his quest to build a new kind of neighbourhood, Friedman talks about personal architectural and community touchstones that have informed his work through the years. Over the past decade or more, worrisome signs—climate change, depletion of natural resources, unrelenting urban sprawl, the tyranny of the automobile, the decline of face-to-face human contact—have motivated us to radically rethink home and community design. In Avi Friedman’s view, these issues have combined to force us to question fundamental practices and come up with better solutions.

Summary:
Winnipeg-based architecture firm Green Blankstein Russell and Associates (GBR) opened in the slow years of the Great Depression. From this inauspicious starting point the firm would grow to become, by the 1950s and 60s, a major player on the Canadian architectural scene: the largest architectural office between Ontario and British Columbia, with seven offices in four provinces. GBR was a hub for partnership and training, and was a pioneering force in its inclusion of women and members of Canada's diverse cultural communities within the field of design. Covering a wide range of individual buildings and practitioners, this book explores the significant mark GBR made on its hometown and across the country, as well as the firm’s role as a leader in the growth of Modernist architecture in Canada.
