Summary:
In the late nineteenth century the conventions of Victorian domesticity came under scrutiny by British writers, designers, artists, and architects intent on bringing a modern spirit into the home. Seeking to redefine the spaces of middle-class private life, figures such as E. M. Forster, Roger Fry, Oscar Wilde, James McNeill Whistler, and Virginia Woolf attempted to rethink Victorian design and reconstruct the form, function, and meaning of the home to meet the demands of modernity. In this study, Rosner draws on a host of previously unexamined archival sources and reveals the many personal and aesthetic connections among modern British writers, interior designers, and architects, elegantly synthesizing modernist literature with architectural plans, room designs, and decorative art.

Summary:
Located on the Kaipara harbor in New Zealand, 30 miles north of Auckland, Te Tuhirangi Contour is one of Richard Serra's latest site-specific works. The site is a vast open grass pasture with rolling elevations and curvilinear contours. The sculpture, made of hundreds of tons of steel, is located on one continuous contour, at a length of 843 feet. The particular contour was chosen for its location, differentiation, contraction and expansion in relation to the total volume of the landscape, and the elevation of the sculpture is perpendicular to the fall of the land, which generates its lean of 11 degrees. The work was first mocked-up full scale in wood to determine height and length. Serra's monumental sculpture is documented here in Dirk Reinartz's elegant black-and-white photography.

Summary:
For over a century, "Country Life" magazine has been influential in the world of garden design. Since 1897, its superbly illustrated essays on houses and gardens sought to inform and educate taste. Drawing from the unrivalled photographic archives of "Country Life", this magnificent volume charts the challenges, changes, and surprises of English garden design throughout the last century. The story begins with Arts and Crafts gardens, typified by herbaceous borders and modern planting, and it continues with the Edwardian debate between formality and "wild" gardening, inter-war grandeur, postwar practicality, and pioneering artists' gardens. Beautifully illustrated with 200 colour and duotone photographs, this is an illuminating survey of an outstanding century of British garden-making.

Summary:
"Light Matters" gathers for the first time a selection of Vicki Goldberg's essays and criticism, culled from her writings published over the past twenty-five years. Goldberg’s take on photography is both insightful and encompassing: her subjects range from pop imagery to war journalism, from photo-booth portraits to manipulated digital imagery, from the “boredom” of voyeurism to the great preponderance of tragic photographs in the news. She brings new light to the work of the medium’s “old masters,” among them Walker Evans, Lotte Jacobi, and Lartigue, writing with equal acuity about contemporary trailblazers such as Bill Viola, Daido Moriyama, and Bastienne Schmidt. Goldberg also tackles provocative larger issues facing the medium, such as the potentially “transgressive” nature of photographs, and the camera’s powerful role in a culture of commodification. Dismissing clichés and deftly negotiating the many diverging paths photography now follows, Goldberg demonstrates how to consider not just photographic images themselves, but their impact, and the meaning of that impact. "Light Matters" showcases a writer of great intelligence, wit, and insight, whose understanding of this multifarious and evolving medium is unsurpassed.
