Summary:
Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (1898-1976), the most important Finnish architect of the twentieth century, was also one of the most noteworthy modern furniture designers. His complete system of furniture-including stools, chairs, armchairs, and tea trolley with oversized wheels, all characterized by curving lines-was considered exemplary and acquired by the New York Museum of Modern Art as early as 1938. In collaboration with his first wife Aino Marsio (1894-1949), he also designed organic, floral forms in glass. His legendary Savoy Vase of 1936, created for the hotel of the same name, and the group of bowls designed to be combined to form the "Aalto Flower" have often been compared to sculptures and paintings of Classical Modernism. This extensive publication presents the pioneering furniture, glass objects, and lamps of Alvar and Aino Aalto in a large selection of photographs, paintings, drawings, and sketches. Texts by Björn Egging, Thomas Kellein.

Summary:
Built environment surrounds us for 90% of our lives but only now are we realising its influence on the environment, our health, and how we think, feel and behave both individually and socially. "Spirit & place" shows how to work towards a sustainable environment through socially inclusive processes of placemaking, and how to create places that are nourishing psychologically and physically, to soul and spirit as well as body. This book's arguments identify important, but often unrecognised, principles and illustrate their applicability in a wide range of situations, price-ranges and climates. It shows how to reconcile the apparently incompatible demands of environmental, economic and social sustainability; how to moderate climate to make places of delight, and realign social pressures so places both support society and maximise economic viability. Thought provoking and easy to understand, Christopher Day uses everyday examples to relate his theories to practice and our experience.

Summary:
Since the late 90s, Dan Holdsworth has developed a reputation as one of the most innovative British photographers currently working with landscape. His early series concentrate on the quiet moments in everyday spaces: office buildings after work, car parks at night and deserted motorway flyovers. Such subjects are the basis for Holdsworth’s more recent examination of technology and isolation in modern society. In more recent years he has traveled internationally, studying the areas where technology and architecture are representative of an accelerated economic world at their most removed and alien. The photographs are silent and iconic, witnesses of our world.

Summary:
Paper is generally presumed to be the stock-in-trade of the graphic design profession. However, due to the diverse qualities of paper, and the constant desire of designers to push the boundaries of their profession, its potential is being explored more and more by all disciplines of design. "More Paperwork" follows on from "Paperwork", which looked at the use of paper in graphic design, and reviews the amazing developments in its application across all areas of design in the last ten years, including product, furniture, fashion and architecture. The interactive features of the first book have also been extended in the second, to create a range of special effects designed to be completed by the reader. Through the selected work of leading designers around the world, from Amsterdam to Tokyo and New York to Zagreb, this book sets out to demonstrate how the astounding and diverse qualities of paper can be applied. From an inspirational church by Shigeru Ban and a humorous airmail dress by Hussein Chalayan, to an intricate range of packaging by Pentagram and the Honey Pop chair by Tokujin Yoshioka, "More Paperwork" shows that paper can be used to create functional, exciting and innovative designs. The book will also include items that are not necessarily chosen for the beauty of their design, but rather because they demonstrate some of the astounding things that paper is capable of: these items still display an intrinsic beauty that will be demonstrated with beautiful photographs.
