Summary:
The Radical Camera explores the fascinating blend of aesthetics and social activism at the heart of the Photo League, tracing the group's left-leaning roots and idealism to the worker-photography movement in Europe. Influenced by mentors Lewis Hine, Berenice Abbott, and Paul Strand, artists in the Photo League worked within a unique complex comprising a school, a darkroom, a gallery, and a salon, in which photography was discussed as both a means for social change and an art form. Presenting 150 works of the members of the Photo League alongside complementary essays that offer new interpretations of the League's work, ideas, and pedagogy, this illustrated book features artists including Margaret Bourke-White, Sid Grossman, Morris Engel, Lisette Model, Ruth Orkin, Walter Rosenblum, Aaron Siskind, W. Eugene Smith, and Weegee, among many others.

"Light Years" offers the first major survey of the key artists of this period who used photography to new and inventive ends. Whereas some employed photographic images to create slide projections, photographic canvases, and artists' books, others integrated them into sculptural assemblages and multimedia installations. This book highlights the work of acclaimed international artists such as Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Mel Bochner, Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, Giuseppe Penone, and Ed Ruscha.

Summary:
This publication brings together an array of Norway and Switzerland's 19th-century artists, who shared an interest in capturing their native dramatic alpine landscapes. This illustrated book also examines the differences that climate, character, and political regimes have imposed on artistic practices. Distinct social and political situations in Norway and Switzerland yielded fundamental differences in the two countries' painting traditions. As Norway endured a long struggle for freedom, Switzerland remained proudly independent. While Norway was poor, isolated, and dependent for survival on its natural resources, the Swiss enjoyed prosperity, a cosmopolitan society, and prestige as an early center of industry. The authors examine how this was manifested in the landscape paintings of such prominent artists as Johan Christian Dahl, Thomas Fearnley, Peder Balke, and Alexandra Calame. This book also supplies a helpful chronology and brief artist biographies.

Summary:
The collection of architectural design projects included provides an overview of philosophical theories that focus on what appears to be real, presenting a range of methodologies and a set of tools for addressing this discourse. The contents have been divided into 5 sections, each chapter developing a design criteria process involving one of the following areas in philosophy: hyperreality and simulacra within postmodern philosophy, drawing on Jean Baudrillard; semiology and the authority of form; complexity and noumenon/non-Euclidean geometry; the exhausted confines of structuralist theory according to Roland Barthes; and lastly authenticity, with the aim to describe how we perceive reality and the urban fabric. Incorporating the ontological potential of space into a design process and part of a set of design criteria will help develop an understanding of the conditions under which forms and design criteria are generated.

Summary:
Mist-shrouded landscapes and remote farmsteads represent just one of the Waldviertel’s many faces: with the expansion of Krems into a cultural center pulsing with vitality, important new architectural milestones have been set. A pronounced environmental awareness is an essential part of the Waldviertel’s identity and has also found concrete expression in the work of the region’s innovative architectural offices. The freshness of summer has been historically significant in the Waldviertel, as the public baths and villas of the interwar period attest. At the same time, along the border to the Czech Republic, paralyzed for decades by the Iron Curtain, it is the confrontation with the region’s own history that is most apparent. In short, the Waldviertel is in a state of flux, a status that its architecture both reflects and is central in shaping. The new third volume in this series is presented by Springer Publishing and addresses over 160 buildings from 1919 to the present in essays.

In the generation after him , André Thomkins and Aldo Walker, who were familiar with his oeuvre, worked with the form of the snake redeemed as a freely curving line. Paul Klee described the serpentine line as an active line on a walk, moving freely, without goal.

The focus of this work is on the concept of research as it is understood in art, taking into particular account research into art, research through art, and research in art. In the process, it also defines the task art universities are charged with when asked to develop the arts and make them accessible.
