Summary:
Published in concert with a major exhibition at the CCA in 1995, ''Scenes of the World to Come'' analyses the global structures and thematic strategies according to which American architectural forms and urban models migrated to the Old Continent, bringing the promise of a new architecture and, along with it, the threat of a dissolution of European identity. The text traces the assimilation of American models in the various countries of Europe: in Germany, where the discipline of urban planning was founded; in futurist and fascist Italy; in France, where the Beaux-Arts tradition was profoundly shaken by contact with America; in avant-garde and Stalinist Russia; and in Great Britain after 1945.

Summary:
“When walking, or perhaps more rarely when sauntering on horseback, one is in direct contact with surroundings, reifying a connection to natural rhythms. To forget the season, soil, and sky is to deny existence.” So writes landscape architect Roger G. Courtenay in this publication. Whether walking the Piedmont of Virginia, canoeing the French Broad River near Asheville, North Carolina, driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway, or exploring Thomas Jefferson’s Academical Village, Courtenay turns to his local countryside for inspiration. In this book the author delves into the nuances of his craft, inviting us to share his encounters with a myriad of landscapes and revealing how he then interprets these experiences in his sketches.

Summary:
This volume offers a conversation between Indigenous Peoples of two regions in this time of political and environmental upheaval. Both regions are environmentally sensitive areas that have become hot spots in the debates circling around climate change and have long been contact zones between Indigenous Peoples and outsiders — zones of meeting and clashing, of contradictions and entanglement. Opening with an Epistolary Exchange between the editors, the book then widens to include essays by 12 Indigenous artists, curators, and knowledge-keepers about the integration of spirituality, ancestral respect, traditional knowledges, and political critique in artistic practice and more than 100 image reproductions and installation shots. The result is an extraordinary conversation about life, artistic practise, and geopolitical realities faced by Indigenous peoples in regions at risk.

The street is the workplace of the artist Paulien Oltheten (b. Nijmegen, 1982). Seemingly in passing, she seeks out precisely those moments when there is contact between people, things and the public space with her still and moving viewfinders. She also has a remarkable eye for the small and the subtle: her photos are often profoundly touching. Street Theory brings together about a hundred photos, video stills and drawings by Oltheten, each of which testifies to how we use, move through, sit, lounge and behave in the public domain, and above all how we relate to other people and objects. Oltheten often annotates these striking images and intriguing situations with handwritten notes that become an integral part of the whole, adding a new, narrative layer of meaning.

Summary:
Our living requirements reflect the condition of our society. Currently, there is a very large range of perceptibly different living requirements. The shared apartment, originally a youthful living model, is becoming an increasingly important concept for the elderly. But the single-resident apartment trend continues unabated, although there is a conscious movement towards spatial organization that includes contact possibilities. Community facilities such as workshops, kitchens or guest apartments and informal meeting places such as saunas and gardens give a residential project great added value. This is precisely where access ways are of particular importance, especially in low-budget residential construction. This publication documents and analyzes type variants in recent international examples and puts them in context with historical buildings featuring sheltering walkways built from 1920 to 1970.

Summary:
With this book, author Henry Petroski delves into the ongoing physical interaction between people and things that enables them to stay put or causes them to move. He explores the range of daily human experience whereby we feel the sensations of push and pull, resistance and assistance. The book is also about metaphorical force, which manifests itself as pressure and relief, achievement and defeat. Petroski draws from a variety of disciplines to make the case that force—represented especially by our sense of touch—is a unifying principle that pervades our lives. In the wake of a prolonged global pandemic that increasingly cautioned us about contact with the physical world, Petroski offers a new perspective on the importance of the sensation and power of touch.

Summary:
In The Preparation of the Novel, a collection of lectures delivered at a defining moment in Roland Barthes’s career (and completed just weeks before his death), the critic spoke of his struggle to discover a different way of writing and a new approach to life. The Neutral preceded this work, containing Barthes’s challenge to the classic oppositions of Western thought and his effort to establish new pathways of meaning. How to Live Together predates both achievements, a series of lectures exploring solitude and the degree of contact necessary for individuals to exist and create at their own pace. A distinct project that sets the tone for his subsequent lectures, How to Live Together is a key introduction to Barthes’s pedagogical methods and critical worldview.
