Summary:
Candide is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to exploring the culture of knowledge specific to architecture. It is released twice a year in English and German. Each issue of Candide is made up of five distinct sections. This frame- work responds to the diversity of architectural knowledge being produced, while challenging authors from all disciplines to test a variety of genres in order to write about and represent architecture. "Essay" provides a forum for discussion of architectural knowledge, including both fundamental research into and speculative arguments on its nature. "Analysis" allows for in-depth examination of built form: how can the knowledge embodied in buildings be retrospectively extracted and creatively re-used? "Project" is directed at architects who see design as a theoretical tool: how can a specific design proposal become a model of thought? "Encounters" gives access to the personal knowledge of renowned, unjustly forgotten, or entirely unknown protagonists of architecture. "Fiction" reflects the editors' conviction that sometimes the imaginary may reveal more about architectural knowledge than science.

Summary:
Net zero energy buildings, equilibrium buildings or carbon neutral cities - depending on location and the reasons for making the calculation, the numbers are run differently. The variety of terms in use indicates that a scientific method is still lacking - which is a problem not just in regard to international communication, but also with respect to planning processes as a response to energy challenges. The clarification and meaning of the most important terms in use is extremely important for their implementation. Since October 2008, a panel of experts from an international energy agency has concerned itself with these topics as part of a project entitled Towards Net Zero Energy Solar Buildings. The objective is to analyse exemplary buildings that are near a zero-energy balance in order to develop methods and tools for the planning, design and operation of such buildings.

Summary:
In recent years and decades, dealing with the architectural legacy of the industrial age has been an increasingly common task for urban planning: industrial buildings and sites, infrastructure, and residential areas that have become vacant lots as a result of structural transformation cannot, if only because of their dimensions, be ignored within the urban space. Innovative reinterpretations of such relics that update existing building fabric in a way that goes beyond critical reconstruction or revitalization, such as the Toni Site in Zurich or the Île de Nantes, can be observed throughout Europe these days. The publication urbanRESET brings together succinct examples of this separate category of urban-planning from throughout Europe. The projects are presented in detail with plans and color illustrations. Interviews with key players and theoretical essays show how local processes of reinterpretation and reactivation can produce sustainable effects. urbanRESET sheds light on the common foundations of these works and condenses them into methodological inferences for a forward-looking urban praxis.

The publication Planning Landscape offers the planner a practical guide to achieving this balancing act. It compiles and summarizes dimensions, measurements and threshold values that are crucial to the decision-making process in designing a space.
