In 1956, Time magazine called him one of the “form-givers of the 20th century“: with his invention of steel-tube furniture, Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) has made his mark in the history of design at the tender age of 23. He started his architectural career as one of the Bauhaus’s most influential architects with the 1932 Harnischmacher House. Even Breuer’s earliest work was marked by the search for a symbiosis between local and global, big and small, smooth and rough. His sparse use of materials emphasized the balance among textures, colors, and shapes. In 1943, he conceived the “binuclear” house concept—the splitting of living and sleeping areas into separate wings—which he first applied to the Geller House I (1944-1946), and which would attain great popularity. After designing the UNESCO headquarters in Paris (1953-1958), reinforced concrete, with its formal plasticity und structural elasticity, continued to give monumental character to buildings such as the Abbey and Campus of St. John’s University in Minnesota (1953-1961), the IBM Research Center in France (1960-1962), and the Whitney Museum of American Art (1963-1966) in New York City. With his keen sense of proportion, shape, and material, Breuer is one of the most important Modernists and is still very much central in the discussion of contemporary architecture.

Summary:
Rarely has a Dutch architect so characterized an era as Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921), not only for such landmark buildings as the Rijksmuseum and the Central Station in Amsterdam, but also for his numerous neo-Gothic Catholic churches, which are now intimately associated with the popular conception of Dutch cities and villages. Cuypers' controversial views on restoration, his plea for a revaluation of Gothic architecture and his influence on H.P. Berlage and Michiel de Klerk make him the most important Dutch architect of his time. Not only did he leave a quantitative mark on the built environment of the Netherlands, he elevated the quality of Dutch architecture generally, and established a precedent for the modern architecture firm. This beautifully designed publication unlocks Cuypers' complete oeuvre for the first time. A selection of essays sheds light on the scope and significance of his work, and hundreds of photos, designs and maps make this book definitive and complete. The son of a church painter, Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921) was born in Roermond, the Netherlands. In 1852, he opened a workshop for the manufacture of ecclesiastical art, but quickly moved into architectural work. As well as creating some of Amsterdam's most beloved buildings, he built over 100 churches and restored countless others.

Summary:
In "Enduring innocence", Keller Easterling tells the stories of outlaw "spatial products" -resorts, information technology campuses, retail chains, golf courses, ports, and other hybrid spaces that exist outside normal constituencies and jurisdictions, in difficult political situations around the world. These spaces -familiar commercial formulas of retail, business, and trade - aspire to be worlds unto themselves, self-reflexive and innocent of politics. But as Easterling shows, these enclaves can become political pawns and objects of contention. Jurisdictionally ambiguous, they are imbued with myths, desires, and symbolic capital. Their hilarious and dangerous masquerades often mix quite easily with the cunning of political platforms. Easterling argues that the study of such "real estate cocktails" provides vivid evidence of the market's weakness, resilience, or violence. These regimes of nonnational sovereignty, she writes, "move around the world like weather fronts"; Easterling focuses not on their blending - their global connectivity - but on their segregation and the cultural collisions that ensue. "Enduring innocence" resists the dream of one globally legible world found in many architectural discourses on globalization. Instead, Easterling's consideration of these segregated worlds provides new tools for practitioners sensitive to the political composition of urban landscapes.

Summary:
Paul Hawken, the entrepreneur behind the Smith & Hawken gardening supplies empire, is no ordinary capitalist. Drawing as much on Baba Ram Dass and Vaclav Havel as he does on Peter Drucker and WalMart for his case studies, Hawken is on a one-man crusade to reform our economic system by demanding that First World businesses reduce their consumption of energy and resources by 80 percent in the next 50 years. As if that weren't enough, Hawken argues that business goals should be redefined to embrace such fuzzy categories as whether the work is aesthetically pleasing and the employees are having fun; this applies to corporate giants and mom-and-pop operations alike. He proposes a culture of business in which the real world, the natural world, is allowed to flourish as well, and in which the planet's needs are addressed. Wall Street may not be ready for Hawken's provocative brand of environmental awareness, but this fine book is full of captivating ideas.

Summary:
The Glass House, designed by celebrated architect Philip Johnson as a personal retreat, is an icon of modern architecture. A crystalline box set in a serene New England landscape, the house is now owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which will open it to visitors in April 2007. Johnson used his property near New Canaan, Connecticut, as an architectural laboratory, adding nine additional structures over a forty-year period. Among them are the Ghost House, a chain-link tribute to Frank Gehry, and the witty, bright red Gate House. Glass House is a unique presentation of the Glass House complex in words and photographs. Compiled by eminent critic Toshio Nakamura under the sponsorship of YKK AP Inc., the volume features a specially commissioned suite of photographs, taken throughout the four seasons, by renowned architectural photographer Michael Moran, including cross-processed images and images taken with infrared film. The deluxe graphic presentation, with distinctive paper stocks and foldout pages reproducing Johnson's original drawings, was conceived by designer Michael Rock of 2x4.

Summary:
With its head office in Munich, the architecture studio HildundK, consisting of Andreas Hild and Dionys Ottl, bases its design activities as a whole on a single premise: to produce modern architecture without the latter entering into conflict with the urban setting, historical tradition, local craftsmanship and, of course, the needs of users. Its projects are articulated around three fundamental types of intervention. The first consists of taking some datum or other of the surroundings, in particular the city of Munich, its history and building tradition, as a point of departure. The resonance of the context enables their constructed buildings to have an evocative power that goes beyond the formal. In fact, theirs is a way of doing things that is deliberately at odds with the notion of form as a starting point. Secondly, they tackle the issue of ornamentation as a basic part of their project designs by linking it to the artisanal decorative traditions of the region. Lastly, and without losing a proximity to the simplicity of traditional buildings and their decoration, they incorporate a tremendous sensitivity towards materials and contemporary technical conditions. In the last analysis, HildundK hope their architecture is understood by its users, that its cultural contents communicate and connect the public with the discipline of architecture by providing a response to their requirements. To quote Mechthild Stuhlmacher, author of one of the introductory texts: Andreas Hild and Dionys Ottl regard it as imperative to escape from an architectural discourse that is purely internal. In their view architecture must also be comprehensible to the layman if it is to survive as a discipline.

The first new building on the Campus – "Forum 3" by Diener, Federle, Wiederin – was finished in 2005, followed by "Fabrikstrasse 6" of Peter Märkli. The third building – "Fabrikstrasse 4" by SANAA – was opened in autumn 2006. The two partners who lead SANAA, Ryue Nishizawa and Kazuyo Sejima, have designed a building that disregards all the rules of historical architecture: a rack, without a façade, with no hierarchy in its structure, and not responding in any way to the maxim of the pre-modern city. Essentially there are two materials: a light-coloured structure in in-situ concrete clad with glass. This publication presents works by Walter Niedermayr as well as numerous plans. With an introduction Ulrike by Jehle-Schulte Strathaus, texts by Aaron Betsky, Valerio Olgiati and Moritz Küng. Inventory by SANAA.

Summary:
The International Garden Festival, held each year in Quebec’s historic Jardins de Métis, is an internationally known tourist and design destination. The reshaping of the modern garden — a hybrid that draws from art and architecture, urban and industrial design, pop culture, and new technologies — is the focus of the festival and its designers. Challenging commonly held assumptions about what a garden is or can be, this book features imaginative, temporary works from the provocative to the playful, created for the festival by architects, landscape architects, and visual artists from Europe, the United States, Australia, and Canada. With text by 22 festival designers, the book offers a portrait of contemporary thinking on the art of the garden, as well as humans’ relationship to, and impact on, the physical world. From the theoretical and historical to the intensely personal, the insightful text explores what makes a garden such a rich site for innovation and experimentation.
