Summary:
In volume 16 of The Conversation Series, Hans Ulrich Obrist presents an in-depth exchange with the venerable German-born artist and activist Gustav Metzger, which illuminates the artist's fascinating life and 60-year career. In 1959, Metzger penned a manifesto of Auto-destructive art, which states in part, "Auto-destructive paintings, sculptures and constructions have a lifetime varying from a few moments to 20 years. When the disintegrative process is complete, the work is to be removed from the site and scrapped." In this volume, Metzger talks to Obrist about his past and present association with Auto-destructive art, how he has come to fuse his art practice with his political commitment to human rights and ecology, how he escaped the Holocaust at the age of 13 and the many projects he has yet to realize.

Summary:
Liberty and freedom are frequently invoked to justify political action. Presidents as diverse as Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush have built their policies on some version of these noble values. Yet in practice, idealist agendas often turn sour as they confront specific circumstances on the ground. Demonstrated by incidents at Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo Bay, the pursuit of liberty and freedom can lead to violence and repression, undermining our trust in universal theories of liberalism, neoliberalism, and cosmopolitanism. Combining his passions for politics and geography, David Harvey charts a cosmopolitan order more appropriate to an emancipatory form of global governance. Political agendas tend to fail, he argues, because they ignore the complexities of geography. Incorporating geographical knowledge into the formation of social and political policy is therefore a necessary condition for genuine democracy.

Summary:
This book invites us to rethink architectural and urban models, prioritizing not so much the technical, formal and abstract knowledge sought by urban planners, as the public and civic dimension of citizens’ experience when they try to care for themselves, for each other or for the environment. After decades of industrialization, our cities, in their physical and governmental dimensions, are productivity-oriented places. Cities are, nonetheless, a more hostile environment for non-productive activities: being able to choose where to sit and rest, use a public toilet, drink clean water without paying or breathe unpolluted air. The privilege that productive activities have enjoyed and those who exercise them has led to the denial of the various biological and subjective characteristics of its inhabitants and the multidimensional character of the city, becoming a cultural principle and a political practice.

A personal book about material anxiety in creative work, ''The failed painter'' discusses singular and multiple production processes, perfectibility and imperfectability in times of virtual surface, and hunger for authenticity. Writing in the persona of the titular "failed painter," Ian Lynam, author of ''The impossibility of silence: Writing for designers, artists & photographers'' (2021), directly addresses design practitioners by calling them to investigate how the material components of their practice are sourced, delving into everything from the labor conditions of manufacturers to the intricate processes of production and distribution. Lynam grounds his investigation in the day-to-day with a collection of essays on design and art spanning culture, race, nation and sheer vandalism. This highly curated yet various assortment of approachable writing on aesthetics touches on space exploration, mercenaries, puberty, instant nostalgia, precarious labor and, of course, zombies.

Summary:
Over the past twenty years, Camille Henrot has developed a critically acclaimed practice that moves seamlessly between drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, and film. ''Mother Tongue'' is Henrot’s first publication focused solely on painting and drawing, bringing together over 200 works from the series ''System of Attachment'', ''Wet Job'', and ''Soon'', created between 2018 and 2022. This recent body of work addresses the ambivalent nature of care and the tension between the simultaneous developmental need for attachment and independence, beginning at infancy and continuing throughout life. Her deeply personal and intimate interrogations ultimately relate to broader questions such as the expectations placed on mothers and the representation of the female body. This richly illustrated catalogue is accompanied by texts from Emily LaBarge, Legacy Russell, Marcus Steinweg, Hélene Cixous, Seamus Kealy, and a conversation with Camille Henrot and curator Julika Bosch.

Summary:
LA-based Canadian artist Karen Lofgren (born 1976) gathers a selection of notes, dialogues and annotated works. In doing so, her living field work transforms into encounters that shape a feminist and decolonial perspective, moving through psychedelics, erotica and interspecies love affairs. Considering works from an international practice, this compendium connects scientific fields to the spirit realm, leaving space for the unknown and the unknowable. It includes dialogues with Mexican vocalist and performer Carmina Escobar, who relates empathetically to nature and the body; Peruvian feminist art historian, curator and writer Florencia Portocarrero; and Dutch curator and writer Marjolein van der Loo, who brings a passion for ecology and social agendas. The result is the creation of an intimate space where rituals, history and mythology look to the construction of a greater consciousness over time, forming relationships between cultural systems and other wild systems.

Atelier Ordinaire develops its small-scale projects using vernacular knowledge and mainly natural, local materials. Atelier EGR focuses on large-scale projects that often entail social impact and collective use. Paris-based architect Jean-Christophe Quinton primarily seeks opportunities to make a qualitative contribution through his work. Depending on the context, scale, and function, this can shift between an individual or a collective point of view. Issue 03 PT features João Mendes Ribeiro, an architecture practice based in Coimbra (PT).

Since its founding in 2005, the Centre for Research Architecture (CRA) at Goldsmiths, University of London, has brought together a diverse group of architects, artists, urbanists, geographers, lawyers, scientists, journalists and activists to develop research methodologies and investigative techniques to address contemporary spatial politics. Militant Media, the second volume in CRA’s series of publications, engages with the ethical and political implications of media and technology in relation to contemporary conflicts. In doing so, it also reflects upon the changing role of media in justice and human rights campaigns, examining a range of topics from the use of images in campaigning to the investigative potential of digital materials. In addition to critical and theoretical reflections, Militant Media offers a wide range of practice-based projects that have developed oppositional modes of representation and created new aesthetic strategies and tools.
