Summary:
A trailblazing original, Predock was his own tour de force. In his work, steel, glass, and concrete were combined with natural materials to celebrate modern life. Initially considered a regionalist architect—one who had captured the power of the desert—he went on to re-establish the importance of place in architecture in the tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright, Luis Barragan, and Louis Kahn. He made experience—what Kahn would have called spiritual experience—once again important in architecture. Featuring the wide range of Predock’s designed and built structures, including houses, schools, hotels, parks, theaters, nature centers, and more, this is an all-encompassing career/life “memoirograph.” It charts the architect’s journey from his beginnings, to his early days as a professional starting his own studio with the groundbreaking La Luz Community project, up to the present day, including the landmark Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The chronological presentation includes Predock’s travel, travel sketches, and kinesthetic pursuits, encapsulating a life in architecture.

Summary:
In the twenty-first century, the widespread integration of computer technologies has brought text-based information into many facets of everyday life. This has caused an ever-growing interest in typography across many fields of visual communication, where text and letterform play a central role in disseminating social trends and reflecting the spirit of the times. "Arabic Typography" takes the reader through a comprehensive study of Arabic letterforms, starting with a concise historical overview of their development and styles, and proceeding to the latest design and technological advances. It attempts to establish the foundations for Arabic type-design by drawing lessons from past practices and aesthetic conventions, in order to retain the enduring traits that are of relevance for improvement and innovation in future type-design creations. Going beyond the historical facts to discuss current design issues pertaining to the creation and production of letterforms, it presents Arabic typographic design as an essential communication tool that should marry functionality and legibility to aesthetic delight.

Summary:
“The Mexican Roof”, built as an architectural signal for an organisation promoting sustainable agriculture, is one of the few examples where a very ambitious project, conceived in the architecture design studio at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, has been successfully translated into reality. Executed by the students themselves in a remote province in Mexico it is basically a roof made out of bamboo that shelters the new community from the sun and collects water, the basis of any kind of growth. It is a conspicuous landmark that also serves very practical functions. The book presents the building process in Mexico starting with the finished roof and going back in time as well, an index that lists the various notions of the conceptual work in Vienna. Special attention is given to a specific method of teaching that encourages students to go for their visions, even if difficult, by providing methods, experience and determination necessary to solve the problems associated with this endeavour.

Summary:
Examining this state of flux of both the natural environment and the living organisms that inhabit it, this book ranges from 10,000 BCE to the modern day to present an incredibly rich and deep time overview of how we have come to our current state of ecological crisis. A far-reaching approach that considers the truly global picture and recognizes the contributions of many disciplines — including the natural sciences, the social sciences, and increasingly, the humanities — this publication focuses not only on the material world but also on humans’ ideas about the planet and their place on it. Taking as his starting point the major phases of human technological evolution of the last 12,000 years, Simmons considers how these changes have affected the natural world and goes on to assess the response to conditions such as climate change. By putting today’s environmental preoccupations into a long-term perspective, Simmons reveals the history of some current anxieties.

Summary:
The influence on the interplay of technical progress, imagination and functional variety in footbridges are different from those affecting large-scale bridges. This fact has resulted in an exhaustible variety of distinctive design, as is beautifully illustrated by the selection of footbridges shown in this book. Essays clearly explain the technical aspects and the aesthetic potential of different structure designs. Footbridges contains detailed presentations of 90 european bridges, with text, comprehensive and detail plans, and photographs taken especially for the volume. With projects by Arup, Jürg Conzett, Foster and Partners, Happold, Schlaich Bergermann and Partners, Wilkinson Eyre, Jiri Strasky and others. The examples are organized chronologically in thematically focused chapters: lightweight bridges, moving bridges, covered bridges, taut-ribbon suspension bridges, arch bridges, etc. For those whose curiosity is aroused by the insight given into this type of bridge building, a compilation of 120 more footbridges, listed by location, provide a starting point for further investigation.

Summary:
At some point before publication, a book assumes its final form, the form in which it is experienced by its audience. Naturally, this audience is often oblivious to the many, sometimes complex, decisions involved in constructing visual meaning through the montage of different ideas and elements. But, although these deliberate decisions are not normally communicated to the audience, the book is always to some extent a conception, or mediated presentation. The contributors to "Before Publication" consider the construction of visual meaning through montage, with each essay taking as its starting point a particular artifact—from Ed Ruscha’s photobook, Every Building on the Sunset Strip to works by Sergei Eisenstein, Muriel Cooper, and Marshall McLuhan to Tristan Tzara’s unpublished Dadaglobe anthology. A common theme threading throughout the chapters is the relationship between privacy and publicity. A concise introductory chapter by the book’s editors, Nanni Baltzer and Martino Stierli places the chapters in conversation and discusses the broader subject of montage in art, architecture, and book design.

Summary:
Newtown Creek is a tributary of New York's East River that forms part of the border between the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. During the Industrial Revolution, when its volume of commercial shipping traffic exceeded that of the Mississippi River, the creek was widened, deepened, and bulkheaded to accommodate bigger barges, destroying all its freshwater sources. As one of the oldest continuous industrial areas in the nation, it is now one of the most polluted. Newtown Creek is the first extensive documentation of this forgotten landscape. Anthony Hamboussi's five-year photographic survey captures the creek at a critical moment when gentrification and revitalization are just starting to change the area. From the ruins of Morgan Oil Company and the Newtown Metal Corporation to the footprints of the former Maspeth gasholders, Newtown Creek is a lost chapter in the visual history of industrial New York framed at the moment of its disappearance and transformation.

Summary:
With a well-established international reputation, Japanese photographer Naruki Oshima’s latest work, Haptic Green, makes nature highly present. He applies a complex technical process to deconstruct an image into more than two hundred elements. The process is like a scan; with the camera fixed at a precise point, the artist methodically shoots a series of images starting from the bottom left corner of the frame, up to the top right-hand side, applying various focuses. After reassembling the shots and erasing its overlaps and distortions, the finalized image offers a view on nature which a human eye could never have. The artist describes the purpose of this series as to experience when you walk into dense green woods, and when your eyes reach out to scarcely recognize its object. Two different perspectives of distances exist here, one a close-up focus to see partial details of the tree, the other a distant focus to see the whole perspective of the tree.

Summary:
The Colour Journal is not simply another publication about the meaning of colour. Colours have not been approached in a literal way but as a starting point, a pretext to tell bigger stories, a means of revealing the story within the story: we all know Henri Matisse's Blue Nudes, but who can say the same about Biskra, the forgotten Algerian oasis that inspired him? We may also know about the ultramarine pigment that Yves Klein patented, but who has heard of Edouard Adam, a merchant in Montparnasse who discovered its formula? The Colour Journal intends to fight against the dictatorship of immediacy, to give depth to the pretty images of fashion magazines and Instagram feeds, to delve into familiar moments of art history and discover what lies beneath, to dig into museum libraries and reveal unseen treasures. To bring this enterprise to life, The Colour Journal travelled from Idaho to Guangxi, from antiquity to the present day, to bring you a dialogue between forgotten archives and contemporary photography: follow a denim hunter in the American West, visit one of China's last cultural minorities, peek into Helmut Newton's private collection of Polaroids and dive into David Hockney's chlorinated swimming pools.

Summary:
In order to analyze the phenomenon of late Gothic “Cell Vaults“, it is essential to understand the building process, the characteristics of the specifications formulated in planning, and the design criteria for these structures. On one hand, the reasons for the invention of this particular type of vaulted ceiling in the late 15th century and its spread over a large area are usually viewed from a technological standpoint. On the other hand, the appearance of these vaults, in particular the character of their curves and surfaces, can only be described against this background. As it happens, we have no recourse to contemporary information regarding the construction techniques or the design specifications of cell vaults. This constitutes a methodological problem: how is it possible, starting from the existing artifact, to formulate a clear idea of not only the production of the vaults but also the decision-making and communication processes associated with their making? Within the research project “Form, Construction and Design Principles of late Gothic Cell Vaults – ‘Reverse Engineering’ and Experimental Archaeology”, ways of thinking about the genesis of these particular vaults are formulated.
