Summary:
This is a re-production of a 1920's architectural building toy based on the concepts of Fredrich Froebel. In 1837, naturalist and educator Fredrich Frobel invented kindergarten (or "garden of children") - the concept that children should be nurtured like the new sprouts. Frobel carefully chose materials that allow children to discover properties of geometry and design through play. Since play is at the heart of this method, it is important not to instruct, but rather to allow children to learn through self-activity. Children learn through the impression they form while doing. Because of their playful spirit, children become absorbed by the task at hand. Artists and architects Frank Lloyd Wright, piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky, and Buckminister Fuller used this system.

Summary:
This volume explores fifty buildings from around the world and the people who created them. Organized according to the idea that architecture is the result of basic human desires to live, work, pray, play, and stay, "50 great adventures" traces architecture back to the people who made it happen. Offering a global spectrum of architectural destinations, the book journeys from Lanzarote, Spain, home of César Manrique's Jameos del agua grotto, to India, the site of Nek Chand's rock garden of Chandigarh; and from Arizona, where Paolo Soleri's Arcosanti, a vision for a utopian community, shimmers in the desert, to China's Forbidden city. Travel advice accompanies each piece, giving readers all the information they need to experience these extraordinary places for themselves.

In the early 2000s, a remarkable renewal of Toronto's Regent Park neighbourhood began. Designed as a garden city" in the 1940s, the area gained a reputation over the decades as a "no go" zone. In 2005, Toronto's City Council approved a revitalization that would effectively turn Regent Park into one of the city's "go to" neighbourhoods. Through captivating narrative that transcends urban planning, architecture, community development, and business, "Rhythms of change" explores the revitalization journey through the eyes of Mitchell Cohen-a social activist, a musician, and the visionary CEO of The Daniels Corporation. The Regent Park revitalization is now the gold standard for reimagining and transforming stigmatized neighbourhoods. Cohen's firsthand account unveils key elements underlying an extraordinary metamorphosis into a healthy, resilient, and inclusive community.

‘Build, build, build – as quickly and cost-effectively as possible’: this mantra can currently be heard over and over and again in the political arena. Questions as to what sustainable building actually means and what level of comfort buildings should achieve need to be raised. Rainer Vallentin addresses these topics in his article in this issue, while Hans Schmid and Wilfried Doppler focus on the effects of contemporary building on birdlife. In addition, DETAIL green reports on a facade renovation rich in pan-European symbolism, Europe’s largest ‘vertical garden’ and promising new developments in the colouring and surface design of solar modules. After all, design aspirations should be retained even though energy standards in the building industry are becoming increasingly ambitious.

Summary:
"Design for Sports" covers a range of cultural issues: how development of sports technology has heightened the visibility of and participation in women's sports; sports subcultures, revealed through the graphics of athletic footwear; and how sports equipment allows for a new relationship with the natural world, as it replicates outdoor conditions inside the gym. The contributors include sports journalist Candace Lyle Hogan; Steven Skov Holt, former editor at I.D. Magazine and currently director of strategy at the firm frogdesign; and world-class swimmer, sports announcer, and National Public Radio columnist Diana Nyad. Summary:
Today's suburbs are racially, ethnically, and economically diverse, with as many Democratic as Republican voters, a growing population of renters, and rising poverty. The cliche of white picket fences is well past its expiration date. The history of suburbia is equally surprising: American suburbs were once fertile ground for utopian planning, communal living, socially-conscious design, and integrated housing. We have forgotten that we built suburbs like these, such as the co-housing commune of Old Economy, Pennsylvania; a tiny-house anarchist community in Piscataway, New Jersey; a government-planned garden city in Greenbelt, Maryland; a racially integrated subdivision (before the Fair Housing Act) in Trevose, Pennsylvania; experimental Modernist enclaves in Lexington, Massachusetts; and the mixed-use, architecturally daring Reston, Virginia.

Summary:
It is not easy to name an architect who can invent as much, and as poetically and rigorously, as Kengo Kuma. This issue of AV Monographs takes stock of his firm’s extensive output of the past five years through 32 works and 8 projects, presenting them in five groups. From the New National Stadium of Japan which is nearing completion for the Olympic Games to the competition the studio won recently to extend the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, via works like the Victoria & Albert Museum in Scotland, the Cultural Village in the Portland Japanese Garden, the refurbishment of a traditional courtyard-house in Beijing or the Camper Store in Barcelona. This taxonomy gives a good idea of the scope of his ambition.
