Summary:
With his residential buildings, office blocks, schools and factories, Boris Velikovsky (1878–1937) made a definitive contribution to Russian avant-garde architecture. His early constructions, such as Gribov House in Moscow, are still very much bound to Russian Neoclassicism, yet since the Revolution of 1917, he increasingly designed Constructivist architecture. One example is his Gostorg Management Building, distinguished by glass facades, the functional division of space and use of state-of-the-art materials. Furthermore in the garden city of Druzhba for instance, Velikovsky intensively engaged with new ideas in town planning. With mostly hitherto unpublished technical plans as well as numerous historical and new colour photographs of his most famous projects, Boris Velikowsky’s contribution to Russian avant-garde architecture is appreciated for the first time in book form.

Summary:
The modernist parks and gardens of Brazilian landscape architect and garden designer Roberto Burle Marx (1909–1994) earned him awards, widespread acclaim, and international fame. Over a 60-year career, he designed more than 2,000 gardens worldwide, the most famous of which are those he created in collaboration with the architect Oscar Niemeyer for Brasília. Although he is best known for his landscape work, Burle Marx was a prolific artist in a variety of media, and his larger body of work—which includes paintings, drawings, tile mosaics, sculpture, textile design, jewelry, theater costumes, and more—is critical to understanding his importance as a modernist. An avid horticulturalist, he was among the first to denounce deforestation in the Amazon region; he also discovered over thirty species of Brazilian flora, which bear his name.

Summary:
The stepped terraced house is a type of building that meets modern housing requirements: it is economical and offers ample living space with the comfort of terrace and garden. Rising to popularity with the advent of new social movements it was forgotten with the progressive erosion of the new ideas of society and relegated them to obscurity or even to their disqualification as eyesores. Yet the enduring satisfaction of residents and ecological advantages of green houses make terraced housing as attractive as ever. The buildings studied in the book are not only architectural icons today; even today, one can still learn from them about what residential buildings need. One proponent of this building style was Harry Gluck; part of his text pleading the case for a green city is printed here.

Summary:
In "Wendy Evans Joseph : Pop-Up Architecture", six of Joseph’s most outstanding and award-winning architectural and interior design projects are brought to life in 3-D. From a Japanese-inspired home observatory, to a quiet, contemplative memorial garden, to a modern, cantilevered pedestrian bridge, each of the pops in the book allows the reader to engage with Joseph’s work in a new way. The pops themselves are minimally illustrated in solid-colored or lightly patterned paper to suggest the materials used in the construction — aluminum, cedar, terrazzo, steel — while photographs serve as the background design and provide additional views of the structure. Accompanying each pop is a text offering a brief discussion of the inspiration behind the work and some of the challenges Joseph and her team faced during the development and construction phases.
