Cities are the affirmation of civilisation and human inventiveness. They are at once fragile organisms in constant need of care and battlegrounds of conflicting interests. A Smart Guide to Utopia showcases 111 projects, initiaves and ideas from all over Europe that make our cities better. Whether it be an underground waste disposal system in Barcelona or a public swimming pool converted into an arts centre in Berlin, a self-sufficient urban garden or solar-powered pop-up restaurant travelling with the sun, a building printer or a zero-packaging supermarket, this book celebrates the energy and imagination of people who want to make their cities a little more fun, clean, friendly, green and above all, restore a sense of community. Our cities belong to us, and they depend on us. Only we can make them worth living in.

His distinctive and widely acclaimed work has been featured and referenced in numerous sources, yet few of Burle Marx’s own words have been published. This collection of a dozen of Burle Marx’s lectures, most of which have never before been available in English, fills that void. Delivered on international speaking tours, they address topics such as Concepts in Landscape Composition, Gardens and Ecology and The Problem of Garden Lighting. Their publication sheds light on Burle Marx’s distinctive ethic and aesthetic of landscape, as “the real art in living.” The lectures paint a picture of Burle Marx not just as a gardener, artist and botanist, but as a landscape architect whose ambition was to bring radical change to cities and society.

This extensively illustrated volume explores the astonishing expansiveness of Asawa’s work, from the abstract looped-wire sculptures for which she garnered national attention in the 1950s to her nature-inspired tied-wire pieces, clay and bronze casts, paperfolds, paintings, drawings, sketchbooks, and prints. The book explores the ways in which her longtime San Francisco home and garden served as the epicenter of her creative practice, and highlights the ethos of collaboration and inclusivity that informed her numerous public sculpture commissions and unwavering dedication to arts advocacy.

Summary:
"Emerging Nature" documents the work of the Argentinian architect, graphic designer and industrial designer Emilio Ambasz. The publication discusses his projects ranging from buildings and urban gardens including green facade vertical gardens to exhibition designs and everyday objects. The comprehensive volume features essays by various experts, interviews, a wealth of color photographs and drawings. Ambasz’s main concern is to integrate nature and construction into architectural design, which is why he is regarded as one of the most important pioneers of Green Architecture. In his work a combination of landscape and architecture emerges, in which his respect for the environment and ecological sustainability becomes clear. A prime example of this is the Fukuoka Prefectural International Hall in Japan: a building that houses more than 100,000 m2 of exhibition spaces, theaters and offices is also an open green area in the form of a hanging garden.

With its fate unclear, the house and contents remained undisturbed for many years. In May 1981, Kim Marsland (then an art student) made a visit to take notes and photographs for an essay on the Bloomsbury Group. Her unique record of Charleston shows the house just as Grant left it cluttered with years of painting, collecting and family life. These twenty-six photographs capture the atmosphere of a house full of memories and artistic importance. They also show Charleston before its restoration, allowing the reader a peek into a lost past. Some pictures will be familiar to lovers of Charleston Farmhouse, but others (such as the ones of the garden) less so. This beautifully produced book of previously unseen photographs is the perfect keepsake for Bloomsbury Group aficionados.
