Our relationship with dirt is complex and ambivalent. Dirt is waste, excrement, rubbish, bacteria--but what then is soil, where crops grow, and to which our bodies eventually return? Dirt may pose significant risks to our health, but it is also vital to our existence. Lavishly illustrated, this exciting and often startling book is a provocative introduction to a vast(...)

Summary:
Our relationship with dirt is complex and ambivalent. Dirt is waste, excrement, rubbish, bacteria--but what then is soil, where crops grow, and to which our bodies eventually return? Dirt may pose significant risks to our health, but it is also vital to our existence. Lavishly illustrated, this exciting and often startling book is a provocative introduction to a vast and complex subject. Five writers and a graphic novelist pursue different themes from a range of perspectives in order to examine dirt and its contradictions, including personal grooming, the politics of dirt in the home, city sanitation, and waste disposal. From a 2011 exhibition at the Wellcome Collection, London.

Summary:
The Architectural League Prize is an annual competition, series of lectures, and exhibition organized by the Architectural League and its Young Architects and Designers Committee. This year's theme: It's Different. Every generation thinks it is special, new, and different and ours is no exception. What perhaps may make the claim stronger for the current generation are the circumstances: global networking and integration, and global economic and security crises; environmental activism and environmental catastrophe; virtual revolution and physical stagnation. Against these challenges and in light of the fundamental ruptures of the Great Recession, the committee posits that the future will operate on a wholly different paradigm.

Starling is a key figure in one of contemporary art's most significant recent developments: the linking of artistic practice and knowledge production. Although this tendency flourished with Conceptual art in the 1960s and 1970s, in recent years it has taken on a new intensity. Unlike the Conceptual artists, however, many of whom strove for a language-based dematerialized(...)

Starling is a key figure in one of contemporary art's most significant recent developments: the linking of artistic practice and knowledge production. Although this tendency flourished with Conceptual art in the 1960s and 1970s, in recent years it has taken on a new intensity. Unlike the Conceptual artists, however, many of whom strove for a language-based dematerialized art, for Starling the object is always at the work's heart. Economies, ecologies, coincidences and convergences are all simply means to an end -- although 'simply' may be the wrong word to describe the transformation of thousands of miles of travel and hundreds of years of history into a single sculpture, film or photograph.

Summary:
"The Continuous Monument", developed by the Italian collective Superstudio during summer 1969, is one of the most known visionary projects within the history of architecture. In sketchbooks Number 11 and 12, dated over a few months between May and November 1969, much of the story of the Continuous Monument emerges – as it were, fully-fledged – from its first conception as a belt around Florence, and its later ambitious circumnavigation of the globe, to its diffident public manifestation – at the scale of a gallery – for the first of the two exhibitions in Graz in 1969. The drawings became the basis of the now better-known Superstudio collages.

Summary:
The relation between formal and informal may be changing due to the introduction of new technologies and the way these are used. Informality can be interpreted as a positive quality hinting at individual freedom, or even be romanticised as a bottom-up, empowering force. But informality as a safety valve for a system unable to adjust to changing conditions smoothly and quickly is another matter. Consider the mass migrations of people who must provide their own housing, or the vast numbers of unemployed who provide labour in a growing economy but are easily discarded later. With texts by Guus Beumer, René Boer, Keller Easterling, Jacqueline Hassink, and others.

Eliasson's exhibition catalogues are always designed with pronounced care, and many are already long out of print or hard to find. Here, in spreads and thorough annotations, we encounter his considered musings on book form and design, and the complex process of book collaboration. Printed Matter also supplies a bibliography of all of Eliasson's books to date, alongside an interview with the artist.

Summary:
This book presents examples of prefabricated architecture in a contemporary context, with special emphasis on more ecological models. Prefabricated constructions represent a more effective use of resources, a reduction in construction time and a minimization of the generation of waste. These attributes imply a reduction in the ecological footprint of such constructions, and in the case of residential architecture may represent the optimum balance between the size of the module and the real time it will be used for. As well as offering new solutions for prefabricated homes, New Prefab, also focuses on cases related to ephemeral architecture (stands, mobile offices, pavilions), situational architecture (refuges, information centers) or public installations.

Summary:
Presentation of a series of ground-breaking experiments with topological optimization of architectural structures. Topology optimization – a method widely applied in the aeronautical and automotive industries - may enable material reductions of up to 70 pct. in concrete structures, while generating novel, architectural forms. The realization of such complex structural morphologies however, calls for the development of new digital means of construction. The publication illustrates the development of new experimental, robotic production methods for the fabrication of novel architectural structures, and contextualizes the application of structural optimization as an architectural design strategy through historical examples, spanning from 18th century physics-based methods to contemporary building practices.

Summary:
What if the city can be seen differently than as a sort of self-organising chaos? Shaped not only by material forces, but also by cultural and didactic visions, the city may instead result from political intention in the form of architectural projects. This collection of eight essays, edited by Pier Vittorio Aureli, examines a fascinating set of urban conditions across more than two millennia of history, from the political theology of the Islamic city to the political economy of Renaissance architecture, and from the planned Mesoamerican metropolis to the Fordist factory floor, revealing the ways in which the city arises from the constant interaction between ideas and spatial conditions.
