Summary:
Architecture is often thought to be a diary of a society, filled with symbolic representations of specific cultural moments. However, as Craig L. Wilkins observes, that diary includes far too few narratives of the diverse cultures in U.S. society. Wilkins states that the discipline of architecture has a resistance to African Americans at every level, from the startlingly small number of architecture students to the paltry number of registered architects in the United States today. Working to understand how ideologies are formed, transmitted, and embedded in the built environment, Wilkins deconstructs how the marginalization of African Americans is authorized within the field of architecture. He then outlines how activist forms of expression shape and sustain communities, fashioning an architectural theory around the site of environmental conflict constructed by hip-hop culture. Wilkins places his concerns in a historical context, and also offers practical solutions to address them. In doing so, he reveals new possibilities for an architecture that acknowledges its current shortcomings and replies to the needs of multicultural constituencies.

Summary:
The problem of rent is at the root of vital social concerns in the twenty-first century, ranging from the climate emergency and spiralling economic inequality to the repercussions of global economic crises. But while many of us may be familiar with rent (especially paying it), how should we really understand it? Examining both concrete contexts and complex concepts, in this book Joe Collins provides a comprehensive but concise survey of the theories and debates over rent and rentier capitalism. He examines global gentrification from São Paolo to Dublin, the tyranny of technology from Taipei to San Francisco, and the excesses of extractivism from Sekondi to Karratha. In doing so, he reveals how rent is fundamental to the current dominant form of capitalist social organization across the globe and how we can prevent the next generation from seeing our societies rent asunder. An essential resource for students and scholars alike, this groundbreaking book will be of interest to anyone working on capitalism, property, political economy, economic sociology and contemporary politics.

Summary:
Digital media–GIFs, films, TED Talks, tweets, and more–have become integral to daily life and, unsurprisingly, to Indigenous people’s strategies for addressing the historical and ongoing effects of colonization. In this volume, Thomas DuBois and Coppélie Cocq examine how Sámi people of Norway, Finland, and Sweden use media to advance a social, cultural, and political agenda anchored in notions of cultural continuity and self-determination. Beginning in the 1970s, Sámi have used Sámi-language media—including commercially produced musical recordings, feature and documentary films, books of literature and poetry, and magazines—to communicate a sense of identity both within the Sámi community and within broader Nordic and international arenas. In more contemporary contexts, Sámi activists, artists, and cultural workers have used the media to undo layers of ignorance surrounding Sámi livelihoods and rights to self-determination. Downloadable songs, music festivals, films, videos, social media posts, images, and tweets are just some of the diverse media through which Sámi activists transform how Nordic majority populations view and understand Sámi minority communities and, more globally, how modern states regard and treat Indigenous populations.

Summary:
This beautifully designed and illustrated monograph sets out Patrick Tighe's innovative, diverse and wide-ranging collection of contemporary work towards the post-digital, showing the reader a hyper-detailed analytical investigation of digital forms and their practices. It sets out how his architecture has brought a return to the real in an attempt to rethink the language and practice of architecture. The book's many inspiring and intricate drawings render clear the ideas that show the palpable energy and momentum that exists in this practice. In every instance, this firm embraces dichotomy, mining its potential to produce a more vital and consequential architecture. This monograph also includes an incisive introduction by Patrick Tighe and is augmented by two essays by Thom Mayne and Stephen Phillips, who also provide clarity and insightful discourse on how Tighe's work is continuously in transition and evolving, and how he's rethinking and engaging in a discourse to de-familiarize the familiar.

FUTURE is a two-part publication by Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, published over the course of 3 years by Edition Patrick Frey. The first publication is entitled FUTURE MEMORIES and deals with the question of how our idea of the future has changed over the past decades, how this affects our perception of the present, and how we face the coming changes. The second publication, titled WATER COLUMN, revolves around a place, a realm, that directly surrounds us and yet for most people is as distant and alien as only the vastness of space could be: the world beneath the surface of the water. Only through the use of elaborate technology are we able to dive ever deeper and explore these uncharted waters. But exploration inevitably leads to exploitation, and we're liable to destroy this underwater world before we even get a close look at it, let alone begin to understand it.

Summary:
How can we design the architecture of metabolism? How can architecture redefine resources, produce nutrients and contribute to regenerate land and protect communities at risk? "Building Metabolism" aims to reveal how architecture constructs, distributes, and leverages power via material recycling, interspecies alliances, biopolitics and excremental processes. This book, stemming from the expanded work produced for the 2022 Tallinn Architecture Biennale—themed EDIBLE and curated by the authors—reimagines the "home" on both domestic and planetary scales as a digestive system, processing human output in its various forms and converting it into actionable resources. This portrayal of the "home" urges readers to look at resources in a visceral way; via the raw ecologies of our bodies and the understanding that the social problems related to climate justice are not simply statistical, abstract, and disembodied. Instead, they are intertwined with our own production and living processes, and they are landed on bodies: on the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe.

Summary:
This book examines the notion of the home in the context of the pandemic and lockdown, as they relate to environmental concerns and how we live with viruses and bacteria. It argues that, in order to decrease our vulnerability to infective agents, we need to acknowledge the link between people, space, daily routines and microbes and explore how the predominantly benign microbial world might be harnessed to combat and boost our immunity to future pathogens. Suggesting more than environmental home improvements, it explores new innovations and new materials which incorporate microbes for more ecological designs, such as ceramic tiles, concrete bio-receptive surfaces, building skins, fabrics, waste management and alternative energy supplies.
