Summary:
Concrete and stone seem made to last forever. But the fact is they develop problems. It is not always as dramatic as the collapse of a section of the roof of the Paris Charles de Gaulle airport in 2004. Gradual changes also occur that may compromise the appearance and structural soundness of buildings constructed with these materials. These changes can be created by efflorescence, thermal stress, weathering, leakage and corrosion. This book explains how to avoid typical kinds of failure. With this in mind, it systematically analyzes cases of damage in contemporary international architecture. It also offers strategies for minimizing the risk of damage. Examples include such high-visibility structures as Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Parco della Musica in Rome and Vontz Center for Molecular Studies in Cincinnatti. In eight chapters, typical kinds of damage are explained and illustrated with examples.

Summary:
Like an organism sitting and breathing on its site in the Chihuahuan desert, the Swan House is a building of organic beauty and hybrid cultural intelligence. Simone Swan has created an architectural and environmental project that re-examines and promotes traditional adobe building while introducing compatible forms, such as the Nubian vault and dome. Swan studied with the great Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy in his Cairo studio and after his death in 1989 adopted his mission of helping house the world’s poor. Simone Swan: Adobe Building is the first book to discuss and illustrate Swan’s architecture while also chronicling one of her annual workshops in Dollens’ first-hand account. Dollens suggests that by biologically analyzing historic adobe we may be able to hybridize its constituents as replacements for current toxic materials, creating new biomimetic, adobe-related building materials suitable for green architecture.

Grandma's story

Summary:
The storyteller is the living memory of her time: at once an oracle, weaver, healer, warrior, witch, protectress, teacher and great mother. Her powers are to do with passing on – not only the stories but transmission itself: "what grandma began, granddaughter completes and passes on to be further completed." In contrast to the idea that a story is "just a story",(...)

Summary:
The storyteller is the living memory of her time: at once an oracle, weaver, healer, warrior, witch, protectress, teacher and great mother. Her powers are to do with passing on – not only the stories but transmission itself: "what grandma began, granddaughter completes and passes on to be further completed." In contrast to the idea that a story is "just a story", pioneering postcolonial feminist theorist and filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha recodes ideas about truth and fantasy to tell a different story about power, civilisation, history, medicine and magic. "Grandma’s Story" shows how creative speech is connected to women’s powers of enchantment, drawing upon and speaking with storytellers including Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Clarice Lispector, Maxine Hong Kingston, Leslie Marmon Silko and Zora Neale Hurston – all who may be known as ‘'she who breaks open the spell'’.

Summary:
Jerusalem is not merely a city; it is an idea. For millennia, it has drawn visitors of all faiths and social classes, each seeking to engage with its sanctity. This enduring allure has sparked repeated cycles of violent struggle for control, often prompting the symbolic relocation of Jerusalem to places far beyond its physical borders. Analogous Jerusalem is the result of a five-year photographic journey exploring these 'analogous' shrines across diverse landscapes. It traces a continuous topography of pilgrimage, where the sacred and the profane intersect in unexpected ways. A three-part essay accompanies the images, examining the transposition of Jerusalem’s holy sites to Europe, the virtual pilgrimage rituals practised by medieval nuns, and the history of photographic journeys. Together, the photographs and texts form a travelogue through places that may, paradoxically, feel more 'real' than Jerusalem itself.

Summary:
"A lot of work" is a new monograph dedicated to the work of the restlessly inventive Belgian design studio Muller Van Severen. Shaped by 15 years of seminal practice, it is the first to present Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen both together and as individual artists, charting the energies of their solo trajectories alongside their shared design language. Approaching the monograph as a collage, the book traces what has unfolded over the past decade and a half, what preceded it, and what may yet come—shaped, as the title suggests, by a lot of work. Raw and ruminative in structure, it draws from their private and public archives to allow "images to speak through adjacency rather than explanation," as Hannes explains in his opening text. The result "feels less like a retrospective and more like a pause," he writes—"A breath."

Summary:
This is a graphic novel about the contemporary architectural profession, in which it acts as the protagonist in the form of an imaginary city called ''Practiceopolis.'' The novel narrates quasi-realistic stories that exaggerate the architectural everyday and the tacit, in order to make them prominent and tangible. They depict and dramatise the value conflicts between the different cultures of practising architecture and between the architectural profession and other members of the building industry as political conflicts around the future of ''Practiceopolis.'' The book uses the metaphorical world of ''Practiceopolis'' to provoke big questions about everyday routines in the profession that practitioners may take for granted and to examine different ideologies at work among architects and other members of the construction industry. The novel ends in the tradition of dystopian worlds common in a certain strand of graphic novels.

Summary:
Byung-Chul Han’s critique of the infosphere highlights the price we are paying for our growing preoccupation with information and communication. Today we search for more information without gaining any real knowledge. We communicate constantly without participating in a community. We save masses of data without keeping track of our memories. We accumulate friends and followers without encountering other people. This is how information develops a form of life that has no stability or duration. And as we become increasingly absorbed in the infosphere, we lose touch with the magic of things which provide a stable environment for dwelling and give continuity to human life. The infosphere may seem to grant us new freedoms but it creates new forms of control too, and it cuts us off from the kind of freedom that is tied to acting in the world.

Summary:
In the tense days leading up to the 2020 American elections, then-candidate for Pennsylvania State Senate Nikil Saval addressed a virtual audience at the Harvard GSD to tell a story about Black feminist writer June Jordan and a little-known project that resulted from the aftermath of the 1964 Harlem riot. The events of police brutality and community grieving made a lasting impression on Jordan, who, while known for her work as a poet, playwright, and activist, responded with a proposal for a multiple-tower housing design. Through an unlikely partnership with R. Buckminster Fuller, Jordan's "Skyrise for Harlem" project offered a Futuristic vision for Harlem that argued for environmental redesign: "it is architecture, conceived of in its fullest meaning as the creation of environment, which may actually determine the pace, pattern, and quality of living experience."

The carpenter and the architect

Summary:
A contemporary reminder of the importance of the carpenter and wood in Japanese architecture. When Japanese architecture is mentioned today, images of temples or pagodas generally come to mind. Others may think of more contemporary works: massive modular walls of rough concrete poured in place and bearing imprints of their formwork in the manner of Ando Tadao, the lighter structures of Ito Toyo and Sejima Kazuyo, or the finely wrought facades of Kuma Kengo. A generational chasm and, rather surprisingly, even a historical one seems to have opened up between the emblematic images of traditional Japanese architecture, in which wood is the material of choice, and more current and innovative work, in which its use has been reduced. Even though the carpenter has long been the lead builder, contemporary architectural culture appears to have forgotten this reservoir of construction experience accumulated over centuries.

Summary:
Gianni Pettena was a founding member of the radical Florentine architecture movement in the 1960s and 1970s, albeit always maintaining an independent position. As well as critiquing modernist functionalism, he frequented galleries, artists, and critics of the day, and became noted for his purposeful reluctance to actual design. Pettena’s youthful work in the United States and assiduous frequentation of (an)architects such as Buckminster Fuller and James Wines, who early on paid attention to ecology, the suburbs and "to making insignificant places significant," may be interpreted in this light. More generally, the uniqueness of his long career is informed by his rejection of discipline-based roles and methodologies, creating temporary works while constantly seeking alliances with conceptual art, Austrian radical design, Land Art and experimental music. This book documents (almost) all of his works, backed up by an extensive anthology of his writings.
