Summary:
First published nearly a decade ago, and here translated into English for the first time, The Encyclopedia of Fictional Artists is a project by author and editor Koen Brams, for which he commissioned and compiled an anthology of imaginary biographies based on the numerous artists invented by writers across the centuries, from the beginning of the seventeenth century to the present. The imaginary artist is, of course, a supremely seductive figure to readers, writers and artists alike, being a sort of screen upon which the most astounding imaginary creations may be projected, without need of them ever being visible to the eye. As such, this book constitutes a trove of inspiration for all manner of creative endeavor. The Addition is Krist Gruijthuisen's editorial answer to the Encyclopedia, in which he invites more than 20 artists to reflect on the aspirations and ideals of encyclopedias.

Summary:
Global cities (and their designs in particular) have rested on the paradigm of market-driven development, and have been interpreted as strategic spaces of neoliberal restructuring. Whilst they are now hit by the crisis of this ideology, the situation also offers the opportunity and necessity to imagine another, more social city. Yet designers continue to hold back criticism and proposals. It is, however, time to redefine the role of design for a social city and take action. What is the role of design in the production of urban space? Is it merely an element in the commodified colonisation of social spaces? Or are design and the visual and physical representations of urban issues themselves the key means by which a Civic City may be created from the ideological ruins of existing urban spaces? Jesko Fezer argues for a project of accommodating conflicts by design.

Summary:
The ROM's architecture is a combination of many styles that reflect the times in which the individual buildings were designed, as well as the tastes of the ROM's leaders since the Museum's inception in 1912. Although the approaches vary, the ROM has always strived to create an outstanding institution, and its bold architectural visions over the years embody this goal. The ROM's first building (1914) may appear quaint and relatively modest today, but it was a significant undertaking at the time, an audacious move for a city the size of Toronto to envision a structure comparable to those in London or New York. Daniel Libeskind's Michael Lee-Chin Crystal addition of 2007 is the most recent expression of this spirit. This same impetus has made the ROM Canada's largest museum of natural history and world cultures, with more than six milion objects, in its collections and more than 1.5 milion visitors annually.

Summary:
Wallace Neff may have been the preeminent architect of Spanish colonial-revival houses in Southern California. Neff was an inventive designer who was not only adept at manipulating traditional styles to please famous, wealthy clients like Cary Grant, Claudette Colbert, and Darryl Zanuck; he was also a pioneer in low-cost housing and pneumatic building. The Bubble House, as his best-known Airform structure was fondly nicknamed, had a social vision as compelling as that of any modernist housing project. "Wallace Neff and the grand houses of the golden state" tells the life story of this architect, who was raised as Southern California aristocracy - an heir to one of the founders of Rand McNally & Company -- and grew up to influence the course of architectural history in California. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white archival photographs that document Neff's family life and professional accomplishments, journalist Diane Kanner's compelling narrative offers a behind-the-scenes look at the development of residential architecture in Southern California.

Summary:
Siri Hustvedt concentrates her narrative gifts on the works of such masters as Francisco de Goya, Jan Vermeer, Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, Gerhard Richter, and Joan Mitchell. She is concerned with the very act of looking and the limitless rewards to be gleaned from sustained, careful attention. Unlike film and books, which progress over time, "Painting is there all at once," she writes, it is only with patience and repeated viewings that elusive meanings present themselves. Through her own personal experiences, Hustvedt is able to reveal things until now hidden in plain sight: an egg-like detail in Vermeer's Woman with a Pearl Necklace and the many hidden self-portraits in Goya's series of drawings, Los Caprichos, as well as in his infamous painting The Third of May. Most importantly, these essays exhibit the passion, thrill, and sheer pleasure of bewilderment a work of art can produce - if you simply take the time to look.

Summary:
In "The surrounds" renowned urbanist AbdouMaliq Simone offers a new theorization of the interface of the urban and the political. Working at the intersection of Black studies, urban theory, and decolonial and Islamic thought, Simone centers the surrounds—those urban spaces beyond control and capture that exist as a locus of rebellion and invention. He shows that even in clearly defined city environments, whether industrial, carceral, administrative, or domestic, residents use spaces for purposes they were not designed for: schools become housing, markets turn into classrooms, tax offices transform into repair shops. The surrounds, Simone contends, are where nothing fits according to design. They are where forgotten and marginalized populations invent new relations and ways of living and being, continuously reshaping what individuals and collectives can do. Focusing less on what new worlds may come to be and more on what people are creating now, Simone shows how the surrounds are an integral part of the expansiveness of urban imagination.
