Description:
Like his father Hubert, Charles Rohault de Fleury also studied at the École polytechnique with Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand (1820-1821), and at the École des Beaux-Arts (1823-1825), Charles studied under his father and Louis Hippolyte Lebas. The CCA collection contains his printed exercise book from the École polytechnique and an album of drawings of the orders executed at both schools. The printed exercise book (DR1974:0002:001:001-105), primarily dated to 1821, provides an overview of the first year curriculum at the École polytechnique reflecting the emphasis placed on the course in descriptive geometry. The exercises proceed from the simple to the complex; from the analysis of simple shapes to the interpretation of basic architectural elements. Many of the problems have been solved by Charles, and carry the approval seal of his professor. A large engraving included in the album provides a succinct table recording the career paths of graduating students in the various Écoles d'application, a description of the core curriculum, and a historical and chronological outline of the École polytechnique from its inception to 1828. Charles' studies of the architectural orders (DR1974:0002:019:001-033), many of which are copied directly from Charles Normand's 'Nouveau parallele des ordres d'architecture...,' demonstrate the continued application of Durand's methodology applied to typical Beaux-Arts studies. The orders executed at the École polytechnique are pared down to their essential form and porticos are abstracted and grouped according to their tetrastyle, hexastyle, or octastyle configurations, whereas the orders completed at the École des beaux-arts are simplified, but still reflect the traditional mimetic interpretation of classical antiquity, with its fidelity to mouldings and details. The conspicous abscence of the composite order and the addition of the 'Dorique Romain and Moderne', attest to the continued influence of Durand's ''Precis'. The information regarding George's architectural career is limited to twelve drawings for architectural ornament and sculpture (1858-1859) submitted to a newly introduced, and obligatory, 'dessin' Concours d'emulation at the École des beaux-arts (1). Series documents the contribution of architect Carl Krayl to the correspondence circle of Die gläserne Kette, with Krayl writing under the pseudonym Anfang. Born in 1890 in Weinsberg, Germany, Krayl worked on building sites between 1906 to 1909 in preparation for the architectural studies he would undertake from 1910 to 1912 at the Kunstgewerbeschule and the Polytechnikum at Stuttgart. He was employed as a military architect during the First World War and was stationed at Ingolstatd. After the war, Krayl joinded the Arbeitsrat für Kunst lead by Bruno Taut. Between 1919 to 1921 he contributed to "Frühlich", a magazine published by Taut which featured works by some members of Die Gläserne Kette. Krayl joined Bruno Taut in the city architecture department at Magdeburg. From 1923, he worked independently and executed private and public architectural projects. During the Nazi regime he worked as a draftsman for the German State Railway from 1938 to 1946. He died in 1946 in Werder an der Havel, Germany. After initially working as a consultant on the CCA warehouse project in the early 1980s, Peter Rose began designing the current CCA building in 1983. Architect, Erol Argun joined the project in 1985. The CCA building integrates the historic Shaughnessy House whose restoration ran concurrently with the CCA construction and was supervised by architect Denis St-Louis. For the realization of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Rose worked in collaboration with the CCA’s founder and consulting architect, Phyllis Lambert and architects Erol Argun and Denis St. Louis. The CCA’s unique design and construction earned Rose a Prix d'excellence from the Ordre des architectes du Québec (1989), a National Honour Award from the American Institute of Architects (1992), a Governor General’s Award for Architecture (1992), and a Medal of Excellence from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (1993). The drawings in this project are largely arranged chronologically from the restoration of the Shaughnessy House to the design and construction of the CCA building. The bulk of the drawings are dated between 1985 and 1989 which correspond with the dates of construction, however there is a large number of sketches from 1983 on. Any materials which are not explicitly dated have been given the date range of the project. The textual records include minutes, correspondence with contractors, consultants and suppliers which often include discussions of design revisions, reports, architectural plan record sets, administrative files, architectural change orders, and files specific to the Shaughnessy House restoration. The majority of the records follow the original file structure, the largest two categories being Consultants, and Builder / Construction manager. There are also approximately 1.32 l.m. of architectural and shop drawings which were kept with the textual records. The photographic material includes mainly research and reference photographs and documents the CCA construction phases as well as a few photographs that document the Shaughnessy House restoration. The models are presentation and development models for the CCA building. These models provide views of Shaughnessy House, the entrance pavilion to the CCA, the galleries, library, Alcan Scholar’s wing, the Paul Desmarais Theatre, mock-ups of the CCA’s handrails and exterior wall facades as well as lamp bases for the Shaughnessy House. In order to better navigate the materials it is important to note that when referring exclusively to the CCA floor plans or to floor plans which show both the CCA and Shaughnessy House, Rose often uses the term “level” with the height in feet above sea level, for example, level 149’ 9” is the main floor. However, architectural plans exclusively for Shaughnessy House often use floor numbers. It should also be noted that all plans for the Paul Desmarais Theatre are labeled as auditorium.

File contains conceptual sketches showing plans for self-pace learning, intensive learning, large volume social activities, variable volume social activities, and commercial activities. Other drawings show links between diverse activity elements and illustrate a communications network with a central 'town brain'.
