Shunning the spotlight by choice? From their outlying studio of Olot, the laureates of this year’s Pritzker Prize have worked together for thirty years developing an architecture that is radical in its language yet anchored to its context and committed to nature. On the occasion of the concession of this prestigious award, Arquitectura Viva presents 'RCR arquitectes. Complete Works 1988-2017’. The book includes 40 of the studio’s most important works, including suggestive and personal ones like Pedra Tosca Park, Horizonte House, and the Bell-lloc Winery, all in Catalonia, and also completions outside Spain, like the Soulages Museum and La Cuisine Centre in France, or the Hofheide Crematorium and Walse Krook Media Library in Belgium.

Not far from Verona on a gentle hill on the northern edge of the Po valley stands a remarkable building: A silvery, shining, modernist villa on a huge, reddish stone set in the middle of a park. Inside is a motor that turns the house 360 degrees on its own axis: Villa Girasole, constructed in 1935 by Angelo Invernizzi, follows the path of the sun and the views into the landscape. Il Girasole shows an entire day’s course. During this time, the film captures the villa’s architecture and atmosphere, its spaces and furnishings, thus becoming a space of imagination of life back then; and the building, a resonating body of the era’s eccentric ideas.

He followed Wright's principles, but forged an individual style more reminiscent of Louis Sullivan and Irving Gill, with taut planar skins enveloping modern space plans. From 1914 to 1917 he was the American partner of Walter Burley Griffin. In 1922 he designed the first modern Catholic church, St. Thomas Apostle in Chicago, and concentrated on Catholic churches and schools for much of his career. This book charts the entire length of Byrne's work, highlighting its qualities while discussing the cultural conditions that kept it in the shadows of his more famous contemporaries.

Summary:
A new series from designer Sophie Krier looking at processes emerging on the frontiers of design. Every 'field essay' is a renewed attempt to formulate a visual grammar for design research. In this issue, the work of American furniture designer Jonathan Muecke is juxtaposed with the architectural photography of Dutchman Bas Princen. The Cranbrook educated Muecke creates boldly imaginative artifacts such as his series of carbon fiber chairs that probe the realms of our perception and make us more aware of its mechanisms. Princen, on the other hand, frames built and un-built landscapes where typologies blur between office park and science fiction monolith, for example to dramatic effect. Both create visual propositions that make room

Summary:
Called “America’s playground,” Coney Island is a world-famous resort and national cultural symbol that has inspired music, literature, and films. This groundbreaking book is the first to look at the site’s enduring status as inspiration for artists throughout the ages, from its inception as an elite seaside resort in the mid-19th century, to its evolution into an entertainment mecca for the masses, with the eventual closing of its iconic amusement park, Astroland, in 2008 after decades of urban decline. How artists chose to portray Coney Island between 1861 and 2008—in tableaux of wonder and menace, hope and despair, dreams and nightmares—mirrored the aspirations and disappointments of the era.
