Summary:
Consisting solely of previously unpublished photographs, ''The Way Back'' is a deep dive through Bruce Davidson’s 60-year career. The book chronologically presents photos made between 1957 and 1992, showcasing Davidson’s exceptional versatility—from his earliest assignments to later seminal bodies of work including his year-long study of teenage members of a “Brooklyn Gang” (1959), his extensive coverage of the American Civil Rights Movement in “Time of Change” (1961–65), and his breakthrough portraits of the residents of a single block in Harlem in “East 100th Street” (1966–68). Series such as “Subway” (1980) and “Central Park” (1992) furthermore confirm Davidson as a quintessential chronicler of New York City. Regardless of his motif, what emerges through this retrospective is Davidson’s overt sensibility and empathy for his subjects, his commitment to documenting them in depth over time, and to capturing their beliefs, communities and subcultures. Unlike his peers who photographed events that constituted history, Davidson focused on the people within these histories.

Summary:
Robert Earl Paige is one of the most iconic artists and designers from Chicago’s South Side. A multidisciplinary artist and arts educator, he works across textile design, painting, collage, and sculpture. During the 1970s, he brought West African–inspired patterns to U.S. shoppers through the Dakkabar fabrics collection available at Sears, Roebuck, leading to the inclusion of Black culture in home design. In addition to exploring Paige’s personal and artistic practice, through essays by Dr. Romi Crawford and Dr. Gervais Marsh, ''The United Colors of Robert Earl Paige'' contextualizes his work in relation to social and artistic movements, from the minimalism and abstraction of the 1960s and 1970s to AfriCOBRA and the Black Arts Movement in Chicago and across the United States. Published in conjunction with Paige’s exhibition at Hyde Park Art Center in 2024, this fully illustrated book includes reproductions of the artist’s handpainted scarves, collages, and rugs made during the past sixty years, along with new ceramic tiles, collages, and textiles.

Summary:
Individually and in partnership, as architects, educators, and advocates, the four principals of Platt Byard Dovell White Architects have made an indelible impression on the contemporary and historic architecture of New York City and beyond. In projects that range from historic preservation--the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center in Central Park and the Supreme Court of New York's Appellate Division First Department--to modernist interventions--the Saginaw Art Museum in Michigan and New 42nd Street Studios near Times Square--the firm's work is notable for its balance of innovation and tradition, of working within an urban context while contributing to that context. The first monograph on this award-winning firm, Architecture on Architecture illustrates the philosophy of Platt Byard Dovell White in its presentation of buildings and projects. Portfolios of twenty-three institutional, commercial, and residential works are complemented by two essays--one by noted critic Kenneth Frampton--and a lively timeline showing the personal and professional evolution of the architects.

Summary:
Vanessa R. Schwartz engagingly presents the jet plane’s power to define a new age at a critical moment in the mid-20th century, arguing that the craft’s speed and smooth ride allowed people to imagine themselves living in the future. Exploring realms as diverse as airport architecture, theme park design, film, and photography, Schwartz argues that the jet created an aesthetic that circulated on the ground below. Visual and media culture, including Eero Saarinen’s airports, David Bailey’s photographs of the jet set, and Ernst Haas’s experiments in color photojournalism glamorized the imagery of motion. Drawing on unprecedented access to the archives of The Walt Disney Studios, Schwartz also examines the period’s most successful example of fluid motion meeting media culture: Disneyland. The park’s dedication to “people-moving” defined Walt Disney’s vision, shaping the very identity of the place. The jet age aesthetic laid the groundwork for our contemporary media culture, in which motion is so fluid that we can surf the internet while going nowhere at all.

Summary:
In 1953, Japanese architect Junzo Yoshimura designed a now-classic Japanese house and garden that he called Shofuso. It was built in Nagoya, Japan, and shipped to New York in 1954, where it was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and then relocated to Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. This extensively illustrated volume centers on Yoshimura’s design for Shofuso and two allied sites located in New Hope, Bucks County, Pennsylvania: Raymond Farm (1939–41); and Nakashima Studios. Each site, in its own way, is the embodiment of the personal relationships and cross-cultural collaborations among this group of architects and designers. This volume documents an exhibition of objects and ephemera mounted at Shofuso. Architectural photographer Elizabeth Felicella captures each site in a portfolio of newly commissioned images. Essays by Ken Tadashi Oshima and William Whitaker, illustrated with historical photographs, family snapshots and architectural drawings, further elucidate this important chapter in the history of modern architecture and design.

Summary:
Dubai, in its newness, has redefined the notion of authenticity: city and spectacle have been intertwined. Mall culture, airports, and theme parks may seem strange and vacuous in other cities, but in Dubai, they are the essence of life. Shortly before the outbreak of the global pandemic, Dirk Gebhardt and Lars Harmsen visited Dubai. Nowhere in the world had they seen drama and comedy so powerfully together as in Dubai’s theme parks. In the drive to bring more tourists to the UAE, develop the real estate industry, and retain a huge labor force of expatriate workers, Dubai itself resembles and operates in many ways like a theme park. In his essay Simulation City: The Theming of Dubai Jason Carlow explores the uncanny atmosphere of spectacle, spatial control, and remarkable societal and cultural overlaps and adjacencies that have become an integral part of life for many residents of and visitors to contemporary Dubai.

Summary:
The Office for Architecture Drost + van Veen in Rotterdam looks at landscape as their primary source of inspiration for their designs. These designs either strongly merge into the context of their landscape or really stand out like a beacon. Next to this conceptual approach, materialization is quite an important aspect of the working method for these two architects, whom both were originally educated as interior designers. Their bridges at business park 'De President' in the South of International Airport Schiphol won the Architecture Prize Haarlemmermeer 2009. This book shows us a selection of projects, giving a clear vision of Drost + van Veen's method of working; as an introduction the architects tell us about their approach and inspiration in an interview with Harm Tilman, editor of chief of de Architect. Marieke Berkers and Dorine van Hoogstraten place their work in a broader context of international developments. The magnificent projects shown in this book demonstrate how landscape has an increasing role in architecture.

Summary:
Today, contemporary landscape design is increasingly drawing from ideas of sustainability and ecological stability. Not in fact new, the foundations of this approach stem from early twentieth century Germany, where architects and planners were already beginning to use the design concepts which are now referred to as "green." This ecological school of thought was driven by modernist landscape architect Leberecht Migge (1881-1935). Working with significant modernist architects of the age including Martin Elsaesser, Ernst May, Bruno Taut, and Martin Wagner Migge was responsible for some of the most important housing and planning projects of the age; the mass housing settlements, or Gro siedlungen, of Frankfurt Main and Berlin. Using "biotechnic" principles to integrally link dwelling and garden, Migge was able to recycle household waste to grow foodstuffs through the use of innovative infrastructure and open space planning. Also a skilled park and garden designer, he drew together green and architectural elements in his "garden-architectonic" approach.
