Summary:
This book is a sub-urbanist manifesto. Its author, Sébastien Marot, challenges the dominant role of the programme in regulating the design project, and argues that instead attention should be redirected towards the site – the site read in depth, with an active regard for memory. Exploring this analysis, he considers in turn Frances Yates’ book ''The Art of Memory'', Sigmund Freud’s analogy between the past of a city and the workings of memory, Robert Smithson’s account of a tour of his suburban birthplace and Georges Descombes’ design for a small park in the Geneva suburb where he spent his childhood. Marot’s conclusion brings these different strands together and highlights, in memory, a precept that is essential to the renewal of current architecture. This AA Documents publication is a re-edition of Sébastien Marot’s Sub-Urbanism and the Art of Memory, originally edited by Pamela Johnston and published by AA Publications in 2003. It is based on a 1999 text by Marot, translated from the French by Brian Holmes.

Summary:

Summary:
Five years ago, the celebrated Dutch photographer Theo Baart (Snelweg/Highways in the Netherlands, 1996; Bouwlust, 1999; Atlas of Change, 2000) moved from the center of Amsterdam to Amsterdam Southeast, to an area known as the Bijlmermeer. Designed in accordance with modernist urban planning principles, with a lot of high-rise flats in a park-like setting, the Bijlmer experiment in social engineering was quickly overtaken by reality and the Bijlmer became notorious for its intractable social problems and exceptionally high crime rate. A mammoth, fifteen-year regeneration scheme (1992 - 2009) is set to change all that. Much of the existing high-rise is being replaced by less anonymous neighbourhoods of low-rise. It is here that Theo Baart and his family settled. Since their relocation, Baart has photographed the gradual transformation of an area of the Bijlmer defined by the radius of action of his two school-age children. Baart's interviews with his neighbours, discussions with policymakers and his superb photography provide a fascinating insight into the regeneration process currently taking place in the Bijlmer.

Summary:

Summary:
Antoni Gaudí (1852–1928) was a builder by instinct and by practice, fanciful and baroque in his sensibility, in love with the bright colours and plastic forms of the Mediterranean tradition. Despite his considerable contributions, Gaudí was an isolated figure in the architecture of the modern era. Critics were slow to recognize the prophetic value of his work, owing to the difficulty in reconciling it with the development of the Modern Movement. Gaudí invented a new form of modernism that combined elements of art nouveau, Catalan nationalism, Gothic Revival and his own relentlessly original imagination. His eclectic experience was made possible by special historical circumstances such as the economic prosperity of Barcelona and the existence of highly skilled craftsmen in Catalonia. This volume covers Gaudí’s work in systematic fashion, from the Güell Palace to the park of the same name, and finally to his unfinished masterpiece, the church of the Sagrada Familia. Author Juan José Lahuerta devotes an attentive critical re-examination of the architect’s work through a thorough analysis of his designs and writings.

Opened in 1992, the Kunsthal in Rotterdam is a key design in the portfolio of Rem Koolhaas, one of the most influential architectural thinkers of our time, and OMA, the renowned firm he cofounded in 1975. It is part of the Museumpark, a park designed by OMA and the location of the Nederlands Architectuurinstituut NAi, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, and the Museum of Natural History. This outstanding space for art is a destination for countless architecture fans every year. It is celebrated by Tibor Pataky, architect and architectural historian, in this inspiring book. He explains the history, the programmatic background, and the cultural references of the design. He also places it in the context of OMA’s work of the 1980s and the intellectual environment of Deconstructivism. Nine series of illustrations—historic and new photographs, plans and documents from OMA’s archive, newly drawn plans of the finished building, and other images—focus on the structure’s outstanding qualities. ''OMA’s Kunsthal in Rotterdam'' is a tribute to one of the most significant works of post-WWII architecture in Europe.

Summary:
Since TEN Arquitectos was first published in 1998, the firm founded by Enrique Norten has soared to a position of international renown. In addition to important competition-winning proposals--the Visual and Performing Arts Library in Brooklyn and the Guggenheim Guadalajara, among others--Norten and his firm have a rich variety of projects on the drawings boards: Harlem Park, a thirty-four-story mixed-use project in Upper Manhattan; a renovation of Mexico City's Chopo Museum, the gallery of the national university; the Busan Cinema Complex in Korea; the National Laboratory of Genomics for Biodiversity in Guanajuato; and hotels and residential buildings in New York, West Hollywood, and Prague. Conceived to represent the current state of the practice, Working shows twenty unbuilt and in-progress projects with an emphasis on the design process. Sketches give way to study models and then to polished renderings; at each stage in the development of a design, numerous iterations show various directions and investigations. The collection of projects is a timely record of the works by this notable firm.

Summary:
The history of European landscape design has its beginnings in the early cultures of the Mediterranean. Again and again, especially during the Renaissance, ancient parks and gardens have been imitated as archetypes. The park is still a site of design activity today: human beings use living material to create an artificial landscape, a paradise. This book not only recounts the history of the garden—it conjures it up before the reader’s eyes, from the Garden of Eden and the Hanging Gardens of Nebuchadnezzar to the first book on botany and the gardens of the Renaissance, from the invention of the lawnmower to the land art movement in the United States, Hängende Gärten II (Hanging Gardens II) at the Hanover Expo by the Dutch architectural firm MVRDV, and the Gazebo-Berg (Gazebo Mountain) of the Swiss artist couple Studer/van den Berg at the 2005 world’s fair in Japan. Every single "station" of this journey through gardens and time is illustrated by an entire double page, with pointedly written texts and an abundance of historical and contemporary images.
