Summary:
This issue identifies the critical role played by public bodies in carving out public space and celebrates new public spaces around the world shortlisted in the second edition of the AR Public awards. Five public spaces are revisited in the issue, to ask how their original designers envisaged their use and how their role in public life has changed with time and shifting incentives. Some are success stories: Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro ‘attracts the richest and the poorest‘, while in Paris’s Le Cent Quatre, artists rehearse in a convivial, open atmosphere. In New York, the High Line’s ‘successes and shortcomings are as much a product of the neoliberal economy as of its designers’, while entrance to Meskel Square in Addis Ababa has become subject to an entrance fee.

“The North” has long held powerful sway in Western culture. Summary:
“The North” has long held powerful sway in Western culture. Often seen through contradictions —empty of life yet full of promise, populated by indigenous communities yet ripe for conquest, pristine yet marked by a long human history —the North has moved to the foreground of contemporary life as the most dramatic stage for the reality of climate change. This book brings together scholars from a range of disciplines to ask key questions about the North and how we’ve conceived it—and how conceiving of it in those terms has caused us to fail the region’s human and nonhuman life. Engaging questions of space, place, ingenuity, identity, nature, the environment, justice, narrative, history, and more; it offers a crucial starting point for an essential rethinking of both the idea and the reality of the North.

Summary:
"Atlas of the Copenhagens" explores the urban territories of Copenhagen, often identified in city-ranking indices as the world’s most sustainable and livable city. Such claims position Copenhagen as an opportune site to engage in a wider debate on contemporary urban ideals, prompting questions such as: What is sustainability or livability? On whose terms are these concepts defined? What agendas are included or excluded? The increasing authority attributed to city-ranking metrics prompts a second line of inquiry. How are the territorial and conceptual limits of a city drawn to define it as an object of measurement? What is Copenhagen as a territory in this case – the urban core, the municipality, the urbanized area, the regional urban system, or…? And how does this impact our understanding of something as complex and manifold as a city?

Summary:
''The Ethics of Art'' explores the growing ethical consciousness within the artistic community, as it relates to art's production and distribution mechanisms. It attempts to show how the artistic community engages in creative, social dialogue based upon the potential of the body. The first of this book's two sections, "Ecosophy," focuses on eco-art practices and the ways in which the ethical turn in the arts implies a greater receptivity to our environment. The second section addresses the contemporary dance scene as an example of this phenomenon, showing how it exhibits renewed interest in "caring" for one's body, rather than transgressing it, both on the individual level and on that of the larger "body politic" of cooperation and collaboration. In this volume, the singular voices of artists are as important as the scholarly contributions.

Summary:
In "The elsewhere is black," Marisa Solomon examines how waste is a mundane part of poor Black survival and a condition of settler colonial racial capitalism. Tracing the flow of trash and waste across Black spaces, from Brooklyn's historically Black Bedford-Stuyvesant to the post-plantation towns of Virginia's Tidewater, Solomon contends that waste infrastructures concentrate environmental risk in an elsewhere that is routinely Black. Solomon emphasizes that ecological violence is a form of racialized heteropatriarchal environmental control that upholds whiteness as a propertied way of life and criminalizes Black survival. As she points to acute sites of toxicity, Solomon theorizes the relationship between the devaluation of land and Black and more-than-human life to reveal how the risks of poisoning, police violence, dispossession, and poverty hold Black life captive.
