The Carleton library, no. 75
A standard reference work, here condensed from the original two volumes of 1822, Gourlay's Statistical Account of Upper Canada is valued by historians for its wealth of information on Upper Canadian society and for its insights into the personality of one of the period's most fiery and controversial figures. Gourlay's violent, acrimonious career was devoted to the harrassment of the privileged ruling class. His Account was complied originally to promote an immigration scheme for Upper Canada, but its disclosures of backward development and governmental mismanagement made it the focal point of a violent controversy.
